Summary
There is a tradition in the kingdom of Bakuha: every time the heir to the throne came of age every eligible bachelor or bachelorette in the kingdom and neighboring kingdoms were given the opportunity to come to the castle and present themselves for marriage. Many people dreamed of being the lucky person chosen when the time arrived, but the process was not as simple as it seemed. Some people never reached the prince or princess before they were forced out of eligibility.
Ochako worked for the seamstress in town and had heard all of these things multiple times, enduring the overly critical and belittling speeches from the young ladies born in more prestigious households than hers. The decision had been made for her for years. She would go to the castle when the prince turned eighteen and endure whatever trials they had in store for her. She would elevate her family’s social class even if it meant losing the ability to marry for love. She’d already made herself a dress and had been observing the way the lords and ladies behaved for years.
She’d make it happen. That was her only option.
