Work Text:
Nothing goes as planned, everything will break
People say goodbye, in their own special way
All that you rely on and all that you can fake
Will leave you in the morning but find you in the day
“I’m glad to…see you happy?”
He’s not sure why it comes out as a question. Of course she’s happy. Why wouldn’t she be?
And he’s happy for her. He has to be. What other choice does he have at this point?
They come to a hill, and he offers her a hand up. She takes it, then stumbles, reaches for him.
He catches her before she falls. She’s suddenly in his arms.
And it all goes to hell.
Everything will change
Nothing stays the same
And nobody here’s perfect
Oh, but everyone’s to blame
He’ll wonder, later, what came over him. Why he chose that particular moment to jeopardize everything.
Right now, all he can see is her. She floods his senses.
And every feeling he’s been holding back bubbles to the surface.
Hurt.
Confusion.
Regret.
But most of all, the now-familiar ache, that longing, that’s been ever-present since the day he finally realized what was right in front of him.
She’s always been right in front of him.
Everything is dark
It’s more than you can take
But you catch a glimpse of sunlight
Shining down on your face, your face
It’s like he’s moving in slow motion as he lifts a hand, grazes his fingers against her cheek. Her skin, as soft as he’s always imagined it would be.
Nothing else matters, nothing but this moment, right here, right now. He starts to tuck her hair behind her ear, ignores the warning bells in the back of his mind as he drops his gaze to her lips. And for the briefest of moments, he notices the flicker of her eyes downwards as well.
Oh, you're in my veins and I cannot get you out
Oh, you're all I taste at night inside of my mouth
Oh, you run away 'cause I am not what you found
Oh, you're in my veins and I cannot get you out
An unfamiliar voice breaks the spell. He drops his hand instantly, as if he’s been burned.
Maybe he has.
