Work Text:
Sunny awoke to the sound of his boyfriend’s voice, along with gentle pokes at his shoulder. Sleepily, he rubbed his eye, while he still heard Kel saying, “Hey, Sunny,” His voice wasn’t too loud, but still certainly loud enough to wake Sunny up out of his slumber. “Sunny, wake up. I made breakfast.” He was smiling, and though barely awake yet, Sunny gave a drowsy smile in response, happy that if he had to wake up now, the first thing he was greeted with was the person that he loved the absolute most.
“Hi,” Sunny said, his sleepiness clear in his voice, but there wasn’t a single sign of annoyance in it. He had gotten more than enough sleep, anyway.
“Good morning, Sunshine,” Kel smiled, happy to see him awake. “Happy anniversary.”
Oh, yeah. It was December the Twelfth: their one year anniversary. Sunny knew that, but as he’d just woken up, he hadn’t quite yet thought of that. He was more than happy to remember such a thing. “Happy anniversary, Kel,” He replied in turn.
As Kel waited patiently, Sunny got up from where he was on the bed, stretching his arms. Despite the fact that Kel wasn’t rushing Sunny by any means, it was still clear that he was more than eager to get the two of them out of the bedroom and into the kitchen where the food he’d made was presumably waiting. Sunny was more than fine with that, seeing as he was just as excited, even if his expression or tone of voice didn’t always quite convey that with perfection to most that didn’t know him all that well. He’d just always been like that, and he was glad how nicely Kel seemed to understand.
Kel and Sunny held hands on the way to the kitchen and once they exited the bedroom, the delightful smell of steak and eggs entered Sunny’s nose, which he easily recognized in an instant. Kel had made his favorite! His eye lit up the moment he saw it, too; it was clear that Kel had managed to end up with some of his brother’s cooking skills, which Sunny knew well. It only made sense, seeing how much time the two brothers had of course spent together over the years, even though now neither of them still resided in their childhood home.
“Steak and eggs,” Sunny said, speaking his thoughts aloud. Kel grinned hearing how happy Sunny seemed to sound about that, letting go of his hand to walk over into the kitchen and grab both of their plates.
“To the table we go!” Kel declared with excitement, which was no shock to Sunny, and the both of them headed to the dining table, sitting in their seats. Kel’s plate had a bit more food on it, which Sunny paid no mind to, seeing as he always seemed to be able to eat a lot more than he could. He was more focused and just how delicious it looked. He wasted no time in taking a bite, and the second he had done so, Kel asked, “Is it good?”
Sunny waited to answer verbally until he’d finished with the bite, but nodded. “It’s great, Kel. Thank you,” He said, genuinely, taking another bite right after he’d said so. At first, Sunny had thought Kel couldn’t look happier, but somehow he always managed to. That was Kel for you.
“Thanks, Sunny!” Kel beamed, before taking a bite, still talking even though his mouth was full. He’d never grow out of that habit, would he? Oh, well. Sunny didn’t really mind, as he was more than used to it. “I’m glad you like it! I wasn’t sure if I would get it quite right, heh,” Kel admitted, with a soft chuckle.”
“It’s perfect,” Sunny said simply, in between bites. Steak was always perfect, in his opinion. Especially when it was perfectly done. Well done. Others might certainly scoff at that, but he didn’t care. He just liked it that way.
Kel seemed full of joy at Sunny’s praise. “You know, I can hardly believe we’ve been together for a whole year now! Even though it doesn’t feel that long, it also feels like we’ve been together for way longer somehow,” he laughed, almost seeming unsure of what he was saying, but he decided to continue on with it, anyway. “Time’s just weird like that, I think.”
Sunny nodded. He was more than aware of that, made obvious by the fact that he had spent close to four full years in his house. Time truly was an odd thing, but that was alright. Maybe one day they’d figure all that out, but that was the least of his worries currently. “It is.”
“I bet we’ll be together for a lot more years than just this one,” Kel said, full of happiness, and it was clear that he meant it, but he still had just the slightest hint of nervousness in his voice. “I love you so much, Sun’!”
Sunny’s heart felt warm. “I bet we will. I love you so much, too.” All they were doing was sitting at their kitchen table eating breakfast and talking, but Sunny felt like this was a day that he wouldn’t ever forget. Plus, this certainly wasn’t the end of it. Only a wonderful beginning, and he had a feeling that it would get even better from here. It was the only plausible option when he’d be with Kel all day long. He had really had to beg his boss for today off work, annoyingly, but it was all settled now.
It wasn’t long before the two of them finished up their food, however, despite his larger portion size, Kel had easily finished first. The very moment that Sunny was done with his food, Kel asked for the second time, “Was it good?”
Sunny gave the smallest laugh, with a small smile to go with it, his pupil wide and full of love. “Yeah, Kel. It was lovely.”
