The deaf spot of all Eridians is silent, open air. A piece of the crumbling biodome’s ceiling finally snaps from its connection point and plummets. It falls towards the abandoned shore, unapologetic to anyone who may already be down there.
Rocky can’t realize something’s quickly approaching them until it’s far too late.

Ryland Grace woke with a start, opening his eyes before quickly squeezing them shut against the bright light of the room. His head was tipped back, the top pressing back into a soft surface. Turning his face to the side, away from the direct view of the light, he gave a few cautious blinks until his eyes adjusted. After a moment, he carefully looked up, rolling his head into an upright position to look around the room.
It featured two rows of reclined leather chairs, the back row elevated slightly above the front. The right arm of each chair featured a few buttons on a small keypad. In each seat there was a member of the Project Hail Mary research and mission team. Most of the members were blinking awake like he was, although some were still unconscious.or
The members of the Project Hail Mary find themselves in a cinema, forced to watch a film which supposedly shows their future. Their captor tells them this will allow them to save Earth (and Erid) but how?or

“Always think,” Rocky shifted his ball closer, bumping into Grace’s shoulder. Grace bumped it back, lips quirking up. “Think, think, think. Human brain never shut off. What Grace think about, question?”
Grace went quiet for a moment and looked away. “Uh, my… ‘mate.’ Back on Earth. I remember I had one.”
A series of happy little squeaks and chirps erupted from Rocky, his claws waving in frantic little jazz hands. He must have been excited to realize Grace had someone waiting for him back at home. Grace still didn't have the heart to tell him the truth, and likely never would. He shakes the thought away and focuses, eyes half-lidded and flickering back toward Rocky. The display pulled a genuine smile from Grace, though he wasn’t sure there was anything happy about the man back on Earth who grabbed him like a dog.
________________Alternatively, Grace has a flashback and subsequent revelations about himself and the person he was dating back on Earth. It affects him more than he thought it would.

“Hey! It’s a lot up here, okay? It’s a normal response to stress.” He rubs a hand over his face. “Okay, I cried a lot down there, too. But not in class! Not if I could help it. But having to say goodbye, gosh, I’ve never been good at that.” Grace laughs, but it sounds sad. His mouth is shut firmly, and he leans against my ball. He’s so soft, his body melds to the side of the xenonite with ease. “I can’t imagine what a mess I’ll be when—” he cuts himself off, but I know what was coming next.
I’m not sure how I’ll be when we say goodbye either. It didn’t seem like it’d matter so much at first, after all, if we part ways, it means we succeeded. I’d be going back to Erid, to Adrian, to home. But I’d be leaving behind Grace. The thought of that is unpleasant. It sinks deep in me; the emotion is painfully familiar. It’s been a long time since I’ve had anyone to mourn losing anyone again. I don’t want to think about it, I’m not ready.
