Messages From Phantoms

Summary:

The events that transpired in Dogtown were the talk of the town, for a while.
Rumors abound of the exact order of events, of the circumstances behind the downing of Space Force 1 and the death of one Colonel Kurt Hansen.
Throughout all these rumors, three figures stand tall.
A mysterious merc, whose face and name is shrouded in legend. A shadowy netrunner, said to come bearing salvation in one hand and destruction in the other. And a jaded NUSA operative, reactivated to serve ideals his own country may not honor.

Now, at the end of all things, that merc finds the phantoms from Dogtown calling once more.

OR

A series of ending calls from figures from Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty that tie into the old base game endings.

Notes:

Short little snippets replicating the ending calls.

Chapter 1: The Bird and the Reaper

Chapter Text

“Hey, V.”

So Mi sighed, head hanging low. She ran a hand through her hair, devoid of the magenta dye it once sported.

“I… I heard about what happened. I… I don’t know what to say…”

Deep breath in, count to three, deep breath out. So Mi sat up straighter, though still averting her gaze from the focal point of the call’s digital display.
“Should’a been you up here. Not me.” she continued after a moment. “Y’know… Part of me always thought maybe we’d meet again. You’d probably kick the shit outta me for crossing you, and it’d hurt like hell but… deep down- fuck, not even deep down. I’d ‘a been happy you found a cure on your own no matter what. Guess I was deludin’ myself, though.”

She hesitantly glanced at the digital glow that represented the camera, through which her holo-call would be recorded.

Delusion, misdirection. Lies. It was all she knew to do, all she knew to expect.
She had lied to Reed, to Myers. Even to V, the one person who understood her old predicament more than anyone else.

She still remembered V’s voice after she had confessed her lies, a necessary lie to get V’s assistance, or so she had assumed.
The merc’s voice had echoed in her ears as she felt herself slowly slipping across the event horizon, drawn inexorably towards the Blackwall and all that lay beyond.

“Could’a told me the truth. Would’a helped you anyway.”

“Not a lot to do here, in Tycho.” she said, though she snorted derisively afterwards. “Well, there is. Just nothing I feel I deserve… Spend a lot of time with my thoughts, now. The same question running through my mind. ‘Why?’. Could’a turned me in to Reed, taken the cure for yourself. I wouldn’tve blamed you. Hell, maybe I was hopin’ you would… I still had hope, though. That you’d find a way, even through it all. But it looks like you ran out of time, chose to go out on your own terms.”
“You’re stronger’n I am, V.” she had said that, back on the maglev. Whether her words were an attempt to lie to V and herself or the truth, she still didn’t know. Though now, she supposed, it didn’t matter at all.

She sat for a moment in silence, pondering what next to say.
“Feel like… you’d probably get angry at me. For riskin’ a call to a dead number.” she said after another moment. “But I guess I needed to get this off my chest. You ‘n Reed… Never intended… never meant to hurt either of you. But I guess it’s too late for any of that regret now. You’re gone, the both of you. Because of me. No turning back time, not for people like me.”

“I guess what I’m trying to say is… I’m sorry. And I’m sorry I couldn’t say it sooner.” she sighed, glancing out the window at the sight of the Earth looming over the horizon, the phantoms of her past staring silently, beckoning.

“I hope… wherever you are now… I hope you’re at peace. Goodbye, V. And thank you.”

Notes:

I have a few more ideas for this, but the Songbird/Reaper Ending came easiest to me.

I do think it was a missed opportunity for the game to not have at least a few calls from Songbird or Reed for non PL endings, so I hope I can put in some more ideas.
