Sofia raises an eyebrow. "You know I’m not your sucker anymore, Iga."
"For free.” Iga’s sparkly blue eyes almost disappear when she smiles big.
“With playing cards?” Sofia sits up fully on the old leather couch. She tucks a clean napkin from their Thai takeout into the heavy magic tome she’d been reading (at Esther’s request and who was Sofie to deny her favorite wizard?) and sets it aside.
Iga nods and shuffles the worn deck of cards in her wrinkled hands. "The fates will speak through any means offered."
Excuse Sofie if she’s a bit skeptical that the set of cards they’d been playing Go Fish with an hour or so ago could also give her meaningful insight from ‘the fates’ about anything going on in her life (no-longer-dead husband, angel baby, fae not-queens, Voxes, etc). But, honestly, what did she have to lose?
“The past: the five of Clubs. Loss, but a gain as well. I think I can guess what this may be eluding to…” Iga lays another card out. "The present: The Queen of Hearts…a lover, affairs of the heart, a strong woman. I’d say this represent you, no?” Sofia stares at the card. The queen on the card has dark hair, red lips, mismatched eyes. “and the future…”

“Thank you.” Sofia tucks a strand of Rowan’s hair behind her pointed ear. “I’m sorry—-I just didn’t...I didn’t want to be anywhere else right now.”
”I understand, darling.” Rowan’s says, her chin resting on her hand on Sofia’s chest and her yellow eyes looking at her with so much fucking fondness. “No need to explain.” And there’s one of those moments again. Sofia’s heart, as much as it aches today, beats, and in this moment, it beats for Rowan.
And maybe it beats for her more than Sofia admits.
Ever let your hyperfixation consume you to the point of madness and you can't think of anything else but the subject of your obsession? That's my relationship with this fic. I haven't even finished Unsleeping City, maybe I never will, but this - whatever it is - is a beast and this author has killed me too many times while reading this with sometimes knives, sometimes kindness, full time tears.

“Shan...what are you even doing here? Why aren't you with your family?” Kitty asked, once had been sitting for a while, watching an old Space Ghost DVD. They had removed the shade from an old lamp, and were sitting underneath its light. “You can't fix me with a few scoops of ice cream.”
Xi'an thought back to Tran, to her mother and the boat to America, to Farouk, losing the twins and finding them again, but finding them wrong, and to Da'o and their father.
“I'm not trying to fix you, Kitty. There's not enough ice cream in the world to fix the both of us. I just miss you, that's all. I miss spending time with you, just doing stupid things all night.”
Without a single doubt, this is one of the best piece of writing that has ever been published. Xuân and Kitty's contrast plays up nicely in this mental tug of war game. It reminds me a bit of Tuya and Maika in Monstress by Marjorie Liu: Tuya's responsibility and Maika's temper seem to somewhat align with Xuân's fear and Kitty's anger.
