Work Text:
Kel really was grateful for Sunny. He helped him. He was there for him. They've seen and been through so much together.
He's known Sunny for aslong as he can remember.
He remembers the day Sunny and Mari first moved in, him pulling his brother down the sidewalk to go meet their new neighbors. How eager he was to have a friend his age.
He remembers Sunny peeking behind his sister, staring at Kel who was practically bouncing up and down in excitement. How the four became inseparable from that moment on.
He remembers sneaking out on the weekends to go to Hobbeez, reading comics for hours on end until they got kicked out. Shopkeep liked them since they were pretty much regulars, so they were able to stay a little after hours sometimes. On the way home, they'd both talk about their love of comics and stories. He remembers talking about making one together some day, both of them dead serious. Kel loved how imaginative Sunny was.
He remembers being flustered when Sunny fell asleep on his shoulder when all of their friends were having a sleepover. The conversation they shortly had before that, talking about hanging out the next day. Kel loved how Sunny laughed at his jokes.
He remembers when he first realized he loved Sunny. They ran off together, tired of making flower crowns. Walking to the usual store together, the two were left with their thoughts. He would never forget the moment of realization he had. Kel loved how carefully Sunny listened.
He remembers them sneaking out, getting kicked out of Hobbeez early and deciding to go to the hangout spot. How they both fell asleep while stargazing on the picnic blanket. Fortunately, Hero and Mari found them and carried them both home. He was thankful for them. He probably would've gotten yelled at like crazy if they left them there. He remembered he and Sunny agreeing that growing up would be scary, and how they didn't have to think about it now. Kel loved how wonderous Sunny was.
Talking with Basil years later, working up the courage to confess his feelings. Basil's awful pick up lines and back up plans. The failed movie date. Him confessing during reading class. That moment on the rooftop... he would never forget. The hug he and Sunny shared.. it was so warm. So happy. It still feels like the best day of his life. Kel loved how Sunny loved him too.
When he first bought Sunny that sketchbook, and the drawing he got in return. Many more came after. He remembers having to wait an hour before he could move... Sunny was dedicated. It was worth every second of it, though. The end result was amazing. Kel loved how creative Sunny was.
When he first opened up to Sunny about his what he soon found out was depression. They've been working it out together recently, Sunny helping his boyfriend heal as best as he can. Kel loved how caring Sunny was.
When they both went to the arcade together. Sunny winning Kel a keychain from the claw machine that he still has to this day. And pepper, the plush cat that they both love and cherish. Kel loved how skilled Sunny was.
He remembers struggling to buy a last minute anniversary gift, only to find Sunny about to buy the exact same thing for him. The cactus that they still had on their windowsill. He didn't think about it at the time, but apparently, Kel was like cacti. That's why Sunny wanted to buy it. Kel loved how thoughtful Sunny was.
Kel sighed fondly, getting out of bed. He looked over to the sleeping Sunny, who was holding the plush cat close to his face. Cute.
Maybe he could cook pancakes. Sunny's favorite.
It wasn't a special day or anything, besides them both not having work, he just wanted something to do. A random surge of motivation again. He's been getting those lately. It's probably a good thing, though.
As he cooked breakfast, he smiled at the warm aroma that the batter sent out. It reminded him of saturdays at Sunny and Mari's house when he was a kid, the whole group watching morning cartoons together while Sunny's mom was cooking in the kitchen. It was always a cozy memory.
Finishing breakfast, he placed one plate on the table, placing his own on the kitchen counter. He glanced over to the window, the four cactuses they've owned for years sitting on the shelf being illuminated by the sun above. He smiled at the sight. Walking over to he and Sunny's bedroom, he knocked three times before turning the doorknob.
What greeted him was a still-asleep Sunny, mumbling something to himself in his sleep. He was so cute... no one is as lovable as Sunny.
Gushing over his boyfriend, he was hesitant to wake him. He looked so cozy... it'd be a crime to wake him from such a comfortable sleep. He closed the door.
He heard sounds of rapid tapping, and he looked over to see rain sprinkling onto the windows gently, at just the right volume and speed. It was nice.
He walked back to the kitchen, putting his own plate on the table. He'd eat when Sunny woke up.
His brain was on autopilot, probably due to a lack of sleep. He plopped down on the couch, turning on the TV.
Sunny's been so stressed with his job lately... he's been drawing all day, it hurts Kel to see him so upset. He notices Sunny making grabby hands... hand cramps were the worst, especially for an artist.
He just wanted to do something nice for him, especially after everything Sunny's done for him in the past and present day. It meant everything to him, and it still does.
Suddenly, Kel heard the door creak, and looked over to see a sleepy Sunny rubbing his eyes.
"Sundew! You're up!" Kel waved, walking over to him and giving him a kiss. "I made pancakes, they're on the table! How'd you sleep?" Sunny seemed pleasantly surprised at the gesture, nodding slightly. "Good..." He yawned between words, still half-asleep. Cute.
Sunny mooned his way through the hall, stumbling to the kitchen, where the still-hot pancakes sat on the table.
They both sat down, Sunny starting to wake up. He blinked a few times, before taking a bite of his pancakes. "...These are really good, Kel." Sunny smiled, looking at him. After all these years, he couldn't get enough of that smile... he really was hopelessly in love.
After finishing their food, without a word, the two made their way to the living room. The TV was still running. They could have a lazy day today. It was only fair. They deserve it.
Kel laid down on the couch, his boyfriend doing the same while using Kel's chest as a pillow. He picked up the remote, switching the channel to a funny show they've both been watching together lately. Once he put it down, he wrapped both his arms around Sunny, holding him in a gentle embrace.
The rain still tapped lightly on the windows, muffled by the curtains.
He needed this. He needed more kind moments like these. He felt his eyelids close on their own, a desire to rest tugging at him.
Well, so much for that surge of energy.
