Anaria didn’t know where she was. She felt like she should know, felt that something about her surroundings was familiar to her.
And yet…
The feast hall was loud and boisterous, filled with talking and laughter and music.
And yet she was there and not there. It felt like she didn’t have a body, that when her hands moved it was someone else controlling them. Perhaps this body truly didn’t belong to her.
She found herself leaving the feast early to retreat to her chambers. Well, what she thought were her chambers. It was hard to tell direction in this strange state of knowing and not knowing. But onward she went. She had no other choice.
In the middle of the night, after a search of the palace, they found Anaria out in one of the courtyards, bare foot, gown torn, eyes distant.
And she didn’t return to her body till the morning, where she found herself in her bed with Hali on one side of her and Girad on the other.
Feeling like something had happened, like she had missing time, Anaria at first wanted to bolt upright in a panic.
Then she felt the breathing of those snuggled beside her, and she eased herself back against the pillows.
Maybe for now she could sleep.
