Day 3 of Whumptober 2023: "Make it stop."

Work Text:

Henry was in the kitchen, expertly moving about as he prepared a hearty breakfast for both of them. The aroma of sizzling bacon and freshly brewed coffee filled the air, creating an inviting atmosphere in their cozy kitchen.

Alex, perched on the kitchen counter, swung his legs lazily as he watched Henry work his culinary magic. They chatted about the day ahead, their plans, and shared snippets of amusing anecdotes from their previous day.

However, as Henry continued to regale Alex with a particularly amusing story, he noticed Alex's gaze begin to wander. His eyes seemed to glaze over, and a slight smile tugged at his lips.

“Alex, love, are you with me or did you just teleport to another dimension?”

Alex blinked, returning to the present with a sheepish grin. “Sorry, Baby. My mind took a little detour. What were we talking about again?”

Henry chuckled affectionately, shaking his head.

“Oh, nothing important, just the mysteries of the universe and my incredible cooking skills. But I'll forgive your momentary lapse into daydreaming this time,” Henry teases.

Their playful banter continued, creating an atmosphere of warmth and familiarity in their kitchen. Even in moments of distraction, their connection remained unwavering, reminding them of the comfort they found in each other's presence.

Having finished their delicious breakfast, Henry and Alex decided to take a leisurely walk in the nearby park with their beloved beagle, David. The sun was shining, and the gentle breeze made it a perfect morning for a stroll.

As they walked along the tree-lined path, David happily sniffing and exploring his surroundings, Henry and Alex engaged in easy conversation. They talked about their plans for the day and shared stories about their childhood pets.

However, as they continued to chat, Alex's attention began to drift once again. His gaze wandered aimlessly, and he seemed lost in his thoughts.

Henry, noticing Alex's distraction, couldn't resist a playful and affectionate response. He reached out and gently knocked his knuckles against Alex's forehead, eliciting a surprised and amused reaction.

“Earth to Alex! Knock Knock? Anybody Home?”

Alex blinked, a grin spreading across his face as he refocused on the present.

“Sorry about that, Babe. I guess my mind just likes to wander sometimes.”

Henry chuckled, wrapping his arm around Alex's waist as they continued their walk, savoring the simple joys of being together, even when one of them occasionally got lost in their own world.

When Henry and Alex returned home from their walk with David, they were greeted by a delightful surprise. June, Alex's sister, was waiting for them in their cozy Brooklyn brownstone apartment. Her arrival had been unexpected, and her presence brought an instant burst of joy to the space.

“Junebug! What are you doing here?” Alex says as he hurriedly takes his sister in his arms.

June hugs Alex tightly. “Surprise, little brother! I couldn't resist coming to see you both.”

Henry extended a warm welcome to June, embracing her like family. “It's lovely to have you here, June. You're always welcome in our home.”

As they settled in, they caught up on the latest news, sharing stories and laughter, basking in the comfort of each other's company. Their home had become a place of warmth and love, where unexpected reunions brought happiness and a sense of togetherness.

The evening with June had been filled with laughter and shared memories. As the night wore on, they all began to wind down, feeling the gentle pull of sleep.

Henry and Alex headed to their master bedroom, while June settled into the guest room beside theirs. They exchanged goodnight wishes, the promise of a new day ahead filled with more family moments and cherished time together.

As they drifted off to sleep, the brownstone apartment was cloaked in a sense of warmth and contentment, a haven where family bonds grew stronger.

In the stillness of the night, Henry was jolted awake by the sensation of Alex moving restlessly beside him. In his half-asleep state, Henry instinctively swatted at Alex, thinking he was merely shifting positions in bed.

However, as he turned to look at Alex more closely, his heart sank. Alex wasn't simply tossing and turning. He was unresponsive, and his body was convulsing in a seizure.

Panic surged through Henry as he quickly reached out to hold Alex steady, trying to protect him from injuring himself during the episode. He called out Alex's name, his voice filled with fear and concern.

“Alex! Alex, wake up!”

But there was no response from Alex. His seizure continued, leaving Henry feeling helpless and terrified. With trembling hands, Henry fumbled for his phone, dialing 911 as quickly as he could, desperately seeking help for the love of his life who was now in the throes of a seizure.

As panic continued to course through Henry, he quickly realized that he needed assistance beyond the emergency services he had called. He called out to June, who was in the nearby guest room, his voice trembling with fear and desperation.

“June! June, please, come quick! Something's happening to Alex!” Henry yells.

June quickly runs to their room and sees her brother on the bed with a distressed Henry beside him.

“He's having a seizure, and I don't know what to do. Please, help. Make it stop!” Henry begs her.

With a calm demeanor that came from years of dealing with similar situations and having been trained in First Aid, June rushed into the room and assessed the situation. She saw Alex in the midst of a seizure and knew what needed to be done.

“Henry, it’s going to be okay. Keep talking to the paramedics on the phone.”

Henry, still shaken, continued his conversation with the emergency dispatcher, providing them with all the necessary details while June knelt beside Alex. She gently moved him into a recovery position, ensuring his safety during the seizure.

“Henry, he's in a recovery position now. It'll be alright. The paramedics will be here soon,” June reassures Henry.

Henry nodded, grateful for June's presence and levelheadedness in this crisis. As they waited for help to arrive, they did their best to ensure Alex's safety and well-being.

The paramedics arrived swiftly, and with their expert care, they managed to stabilize Alex's condition. He regained consciousness, albeit groggily, as they prepared to transport him to the hospital for further evaluation and tests.

At the hospital, while Alex was receiving medical attention and undergoing tests, a neurologist approached Henry to discuss what had just occurred. With a serious but compassionate tone, they explained that Alex had just experienced a grand mal seizure due to epilepsy. The doctors also elaborated that Alex’s epilepsy may have gone undetected for years since epilepsy can be manifested through other types of seizures, like absence seizures. These seizures had often been seen in moments of zoning out, which they had mistaken for mere daydreaming.

Henry listened with a mixture of relief and concern, grateful that Alex was in good hands and receiving the proper diagnosis and care. However, he couldn't help but feel worried about what this meant for Alex's health and their future together.

As the neurologist outlined a treatment plan and potential adjustments to Alex's lifestyle to manage his epilepsy, Henry nodded, determined to support Alex every step of the way. Their love had weathered many storms, and they were ready to face this new challenge together, armed with knowledge and a deep commitment to each other's well-being.

As Alex lay in the hospital bed, the memories of the seizure and the fear it had instilled still fresh in his mind, he looked up at Henry with pleading eyes.

“Henry, please, I want to go home. I don't want to be here anymore.”

Henry sat beside Alex, gently taking his hand and offering reassurance.

“I know, love, I understand. That seizure scared me too, but we'll manage this together. We're a team, remember?”

Alex nodded, tears glistening in his eyes. He trusted Henry completely, knowing that they could face any challenge as long as they were together.

“I love you, Henry. Thank you for being there for me.”

Henry leaned in, pressing a tender kiss to Alex's forehead.

“I love you too, Alex. We'll get through this, I promise.”

With their love and commitment to one another, they knew they could navigate the challenges that lay ahead, including managing Alex's epilepsy, and that their bond would only grow stronger in the process.
