The Fires of Family

Summary:

The whole world learned to fear to blue flames of Satan. Time after time they caused carnage and destruction, killed any who made contact.
While they were a sign of evil for more Yuri Egin saw them as a sign of those she loved. It started with her care for a demon, and ended with the birth of her demon son, the blue flames surrounding them both a warm comfort to her.

Unfortunately the world couldn't see that, demons were evil, and the blue flames of their leader the worst of all. She blamed their arrogance for her lovers rampage, that ultimately did him in. The world wouldn't welcome, because she did Yuri was marked as a witch by many. Her sons from the moment of their birth, the human and the demon one were hated for who and what they were. Exorcists couldn't see one was just like them, only could see the demon who created them.

All of them were unwelcome in this world, but that doesn't mean all are the same. Maybe Assiah would reject them, but perhaps in a world called Earthland they could be happy, and find a family.

Notes:

Heyyy! So I really should work on one of my other works, but this idea just keeps running through my mind, so I'm making it.
I have a base idea on where this will go but not everything is set in stone, so any constructive criticism or recommendations are welcome, tho I may not go with them.

This will be a Rin focused story in the Fairy Tail world, following most of those events.

For this to work im not giving any specific ages for characters, however Rin will be about the same age as Natsu thought the story. I however do want to change some things while keeping other similar so expect that.
Tags will be updated as chapter release to include characters and more information, I will mention each new or updated tag with every update. Another thing is expect uneven chapter lengths some may be a few thousand words others barely a thousand.

Anyways I hope you enjoy!!! I look forward to working on this some more and improving my writing with it!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Chapter 1: Prologue 1

Chapter Text

It was a cold December night. To the unaware the calm atmosphere was perfect for wrapping up their holidays. A light snowfall was gracing the land as it had been for some days, and the half moon was shining its reflected light across the land, just as a mirror would.

All appeared at peace.

The calmness of the night was but a cruel masquerade for many people. As the world slept or went about their day a hidden group was going through a tragedy. These people were known as the Knights of the True Cross, an organization serving under the Vatican.

Blue Fire ravaged members across the globe, burning everything and one they touched. Screams for the lost echoed throughout the night where these people dwelled. The intensity increased by greater amounts the closer they got to True Cross Town in Japan. A warehouse type building just outside the city was the source of pain greater than anywhere else.

The cries and howling of the dead or dying, was nothing but a horrid symphony fading to silence with every passing moment. Charred corpses littered the ground while any survivors fought to remain.

Elsewhere just outside two sets of footprints remained in the snow, both sets traveling side by side. One set however was uneven and wobbly, both were on a course away from the warehouse. If you followed them for long enough you'd find two silhouettes illuminated by a soft blue glow, coming from the same blue flames the rest of the Order is running from. Yet these two continued on completely unharmed by them.

After hours of walking the people came across a small cabin in the woods, nothing much but it was enough to give them a desperately needed break. The taller of the two quickly started a regular fire and helped the other to sit down, once in the light it was clear the two were not alone. The taller of them clearly a man had white grey hair, a cassock like a priest, and a pair of glasses. In his arms he held a newly born baby, seeming to have the beginnings of brown hair as well as a few small moles adorning the clearly male baby's face.

The other person was a short woman, she had the same brown hair as the child, and a few more moles. She too wasn't alone and was carrying the source of the still glowing blue fire, another newborn baby boy bathed in it. Unlike the first child this one also has hair as white as the snow outside, his ears came to a very long sharp point and his teeth already seemed to have come in much like small razor blades. You wouldn't have to be a genius to know the child wasn't normal, but for the exorcists of the True Cross including the man next to them everything about the boy screamed demon .

"Yuri," the man said. "What's your plan now? Ya know the Vatican won't stop trying to kill them… especially that one" he continued with a voice tinted with disgust.

"He has a name Shiro, and it's Rin if you'd be so kind to remember." She paused to think about what he said. "And I'm not sure… I won't let them kill either of them" she added sounding determined yet still deep in thought.

"Ya know it was my job ta kill them, this one…" gesturing to the one in his arms, "Seems human enough, we could just get rid of that one over there and you'd still have one left" he shrugged nonchalantly.

"SHIRO" the woman shouted, startling the baby she was holding. He started making an odd sound, somewhere between a cry and a growl, which only got him a dirty look from the priest. The woman Yuri took a moment to calm down, unwilling to disturb either of her children again. "You will not touch neither Rin nor Yukio" taking a breath "I don't care what you think of them or their father, they are my children"

She was crazy, surely. That thing was not a child, if the blue flames of the devil weren't enough, the small creature had just killed multiple skilled exorcists not even 5 hours ago. Yuri wasn't thinking clearly, she should know better than to trust a demon, any demon. Shiro was the only one who could reach her and certainly the only sane one at the moment. Just as he was about to refute, the flaming demon child began crying yet again, followed by the human one doing the same.

"Shhh shhh, it's alright we're safe for now boys, please calm down" Yuri was trying her best to call the crying babies, she'd almost mastered her 'mom' voice but it was clear she was a new mother, she seemed a bit unsure even if she was a natural. As soon as the crying started it stopped, both the boys getting extremely quiet. Within seconds Yuri understood their odd behavior.

Seconds later the faint sounds of voices reached the ears of the cabin's occupants.

"No… they found us already…" Yuri said as she used what energy she could to try and stand, unfortunately after giving birth she was too weak and walking through the snow took everything else she had. Frantically looking around for any kind of solution her mind was racing. The priest had moved to go help her, but the child still in her arms seemed to keep him a bit hesitant.

"I- S-Shiro I need you to take Yukio and Rin away from here, run, keep them safe" the new mother extended her hands to pass the baby in her arms to the man. "Yuri you're crazy!!! I'm not leaving you, now get up and we can get out of here while we have time!!" He clearly was upset with her request, yet both of them knew it was the best if only choice they had. If Yuri continued to move around surely she wouldn't make it the night, that's if they managed to get away. "Don't argue with me! We don't have time, j-just take them and leave!! I will figure something out…"

She had a point, if she stayed there was always the chance they'd spare her, her kids wouldn't be so lucky, but she may just be. Yet that would mean Shiro would have to take the devil spawn with him, the human kid Yukio he could handle but taking a demon he just wouldn't. Then it hit him, they didn't know she had twins, nor that he was working with her. If he left the demon with her they would no doubt kill it, Yuri could still be spared and she could come back to her normal, human son. Harsh as it may be, a demon was a demon, she may hate him for it, but it was already violent not to mention a blue flaming beacon while trying to escape was just stupid.

"Fine, I'll go, and I'll take Yukio with me, but that one won't be coming" He agreed coldly. Without waiting for an answer from his friend the priest left out the back with a young Yukio in hand. "WAIT! WAIT! SHIRO! PLEASE!!!" She begged him, long after he was already gone. Yuri hugged Rin closer to herself hoping only to protect him, knowing it was all in vain, the exorcists would be here any minute, both she and her baby would be killed…

The minutes passed slowly, the voices getting louder and louder, the woman knew any moment they'd barge in weapons drawn and wouldn't give a second thought before attacking. The door opened, it wasn't broken down like expected, it was opened rather gently. In walked a very tall man, he wore a rather odd white suit, his hair was purple and he was crowned with a top hat. Yuri knew this man "Sir Pheles…" she breathed.

"Ah it seems I was the first to find you after all!! Who would have thought" he spoke in a tone too full of glee. "You are surely lucky, Jungfrau " . Finally, it seemed the young Rin caught his attention. "I see, this must be my newest brother! How very unexpected!" As he said this the man closed in on Yuri, she slid back as much as her body would let her, hugging Rin in closer.

"I can see why the Vatican wants this one dead so badly, who'd have thought a human could give birth to a full blooded demon!!" Wait what- Yuri's mind blanked for a moment. "W-what?" Was all she managed. "Oh? Did you not realize? My my and here I thought you of everyone could tell the difference" the man commented, as he did his smile grew wider exposing his unnaturally sharp teeth. "How do I know you're telling the truth? Demons lie after all". At that the newly identified demon burst out laughing, Yuri was sure he'd be rolling on the floor if it wouldn't ruin his outfit.

"Demons lie, you say? The very woman who had a child with Satan himself, who now plans to raise one of those very same demons?" He paused to regain his breath. "But I digress, I am here for a reason after all. As fun as this has been." Pulling an umbrella out of midair he crouched down in front of her.

"Now as an honorary member of the Order my job was naturally to kill you and the young one. Yet I have a… personal mission here, I'll give you a choice" He began. "I could kill you both here, take care of it as they wish. Or… I could spare you, send you both far from here, of course you wouldn't be able to return easily if at all". A choice he said, between dying or living? She would not let anyone harm her sons so long as she was alive, taking Pheles deal was the only option.

Then it hit her, he only knew about Rin, what would happen to Yukio? Or Shiro? Even if he didn't understand, Shiro was still her closest friend, if things were different maybe even lover. She'd just have to explain and hope the demon would still agree. "I choose the latter… but I want you to send Shiro and Yukio as well". Of course she knew there was no way her situation was the kind where she should be making demands, she just couldn't bear to lose them.

"I'm afraid this deal is for just the two of you" of course it was, he knew what he was doing but she couldn't argue more. She was risking too much as it was, "Very well then… please just do it… before others show up" if possible his grin grew even wider, it all went just as he planned and everyone knew it.

Standing up, Pheles raised his umbrella. Seemingly pointing it in random directions throughout the air he spoke "Eins" he started "Zwei" the air began to pulse with energy "Drei!!" As he finished Yuri felt herself being pulled towards a newly formed doorway, unable to move all she could do was hold onto Rin as tight as she could safely manage. "Goodbye dear Yuri, I do believe you shall enjoy this new world!"

'Wait world?' Was the last thought she managed before she disappeared beyond the doorway, vanishing from sight.

"Now then, Shiro, you can come out now~". A pause before a soft shuffling sound filled the air, following that the priest from early as well as the baby Yukio appeared. "Mephisto" his voice was dripping with wary detestment. "What did you do with Yuri" he said slowly, "My my so there really were twins I see!" Dodging the question, Mephisto turned his attention towards Yukio. "How curious, the one before didn't appear to be a human beyond his body, yet this one seems just the opposite!!" Shiro stopped, sure he'd realized this one was more of a human then the blue flaming creature Yuri was adamant about keeping. Though it should be impossible for either to be just one and not the other, he knew for a fact half demons could look just as normal as anyone.

"You're lying, we both know that's impossible" all the demon did was take a step forward, closing in on where Shiro stood. "Unlikely yes, impossible, well nothing's impossible!" His eyes narrow the slightest bit onto the priest. "It seems to me you are more of a demon then that boy is" as much as the priest detested the fact Mephisto was right, he had a point, Shiro could tell the kid was human, just like Yuri.

"Now my question for you~ just what do you intend to do now?" Pheles asked, clearly he believed to know how this would turn out, knowing him Shiro was sure he probably did. "If what you say is true… I told Yuri I'd take Yukio away, I won't go back on that now, he may be his son, but he's also Yuri's" as he spoke more and more determination filled his being. "I'll raise him as my son, that way, when Yuri comes back I'll have done everything I could for her!" He declared confidently.

This caused the demon before him to smile a cunning grin, in a way only a demon could. "This certainly has become an entertaining game~"

~~~~~~~~~~
After the light from the fire had faded from her sight, echoes of conversation reached her ears. They were quiet, fading quickly, only bits and pieces could be made out, but to Yuri they sounded like Sir. Pheles and was it Shiro? Talking. "I'll raise him as my son".
That was, Shiro. Suddenly a calmness washed over her, she may not know what happened, where she was going, what the future holds, or if she'd ever get to see them again. Yet in this dark abyss she was sinking further into was peace. Yukio would be safe with Shiro, he was human and wouldn't be in danger there, even if it was away from his mother and brother she knew he would be alright until she could return. 'Return' she thought, Yuri may not have known how or when, but she would be back. Her and Rin would be and they could all be as they should, a family all together. This she made as a promise.
As Shiro's last words reached her ears it all faded, no sound, light, touch. She was trapped in a vast abyss of nothing, all that existed in the space was her and her child. Days could have passed, weeks even, and she'd have no idea. Maybe she'd never admit it, but it terrified her, going through so much in just one night. Now with no clue as to where she was going, if anywhere. The only thing that mattered was keeping Rin safe then finding out a way home someday.
The nothingness continued for some time, never growing nor shrinking. Until it was broken, the concept of time hit Yuri like a truck, stars filled the emptiness lighting up like a sparkle of fireflies. With each passing moment more became clear, stars formed constellations, and the abyss became a beautiful night sky. Above and below was a scene clearer than she'd ever seen before. Rin awoke with the return of senses, his flames growing brighter, encasing them both in their warmth, illuminating them as if they too were stars in this endless sky.
The sky lit up more with every second, stars growing brighter and shooting across their surroundings. With each one the feeling in the air became more and more oppressing, bearing down on Yuri. It was like an invisible force, much like the feeling high level demons give off, yet so much more comforting than their evil aura. It filled the space surrounding her, some being burned away by Rin's flames, some dancing around it to fill every last space around her.
The strange power was comforting and warm, in a way similar to how she felt about her sons, and his flames, safe yet dangerous. Unlike the flames this gave a feeling of goodness, and right. As much as she loved the blue fire of the people she grew to love, it was a demon power wielded by powerful demons, the dark feeling was always there even if she'd learn to associate it with love.
Closing in around her, seeping into her very skin and they floated through the vast sky. As the force filled her very being, a tight pull started in her gut. Soon she found they were picking up speed, moving through the starscape faster and faster. The darkness faded away as more and more light filled the space like a sunrise, growing even brighter. Then it overtook her vision as everything went a blinding white.
Then, nothing.
