Work Text:
Doctors, especially surgeons, we're no strangers to death. They did everything in their God given power, and then some more, to ensure that their patient would live. Sometimes it worked in their favour, and other times it didn't. It was a fact that they had to accept, it was something that they had to move on from.
But Alex couldn't.
Every night he would wake up from another nightmare, the noise of the heart monitor flatlining ringing in his ears. His days were no better, he took on more shifts at the hospital to distract from the now silent house. The hospital was full of reminders of the life he had lost, the life Bailey had failed.
He had trusted her to save his wife. She had come in through the ambulance bay, crush injuries from some form of car accident. Alex barely saw her as she was rushed into O.R two, Bailey following along behind her, promising Alex that she would do her best. But it wasn't good enough.
Alex knew that he had to forgive Bailey, they had all lost patients, he knew that all to well. It's a fact of life that not everyone can be saved. However, no amount of reasoning could allow himself to be able to meet her apologetic glances.
He would be able to face reality sooner or later, forgiveness would be granted, and his days would become somewhat easier again. Though for now, he would avoid the glances, brush off the gentle touches, and hope to make it through the day.
