Rain leaned over the couch, smiling down at Phayu. He had fallen asleep while reading, while Rain played games on his phone. While he slept, Rain couldn’t help but stare. Sure he could look at Phayu any time he wanted, but this felt different. He was so peaceful as he slept.
The way the golden light of the beginning sunset shone on him, made it almost look like he was glowing. Strands of hair had fallen out of his ponytail and onto his face, framing it perfectly. He was ethereal. Every time Rain looked at him his heart did flips.
“Phayu~” Rain called out quietly. Without a response he leaned down closer. “Hubby~” He cooed.
Phayu shifted, his eyes opening slowly. He gasped, the sound making Rain back up a bit. The omega giggled, walking around the couch to sit down by his feet. Phayu pushed himself up, setting his book on the coffee table.
“I’m sorry I fell asleep.” He said, groaning as he stretched his arms up over his head. Rain’s eyes darted down to the sliver of skin exposed as his shirt rode up from the motion.
“It’s okay, you’ve been working hard. You deserve to rest.” Rain said, moving to sit criss-cross, facing Phayu completely.
“Is everything okay?” Phayu asked.
“Everything is fine, I just wanted to ask what you wanted for dinner.” Rain said.
“I told you I would cook for you.” Phayu said with a smile. He reached back, undoing his ponytail, letting his hair fall free. He ran his fingers through his hair, pushing it back to get it to fall naturally.
“But you’re so tired..” Rain said with a pout. Phayu chuckled, fighting back the urge to reach out and poke Rain’s bottom lip.
“It’s okay wifey. Let me take care of you.” Phayu said, getting up from the couch. Rain twisted, putting his arms up on the back of the couch. He laid his head down on his arms, watching as Phayu moved around the kitchen.
Phayu with his hair down, prepping ingredients, giving away soft smiles. It was a side of the alpha that only Rain got to see. That thought alone made Rain feel so special. Most of the time, even around his best friend and brother, Phayu put on a front. It was a side of himself that he allowed the world to see. This side was only ever for Rain.
Dinner was made quickly, and the pair sat at the dining table eating across from each other. Every time Rain came over he felt more and more comfortable in the large home. Despite its size, and just how clean the building was, it felt safe and warm. Everywhere he went smelled distinctly like Phayu. His scent took over his twin’s easily.
Phayu’s house was more of a home to him now than his own home. His own bed felt lonely. Even if he didn’t actually sleep in the same bed as Phayu, having his scent completely envelop him was the perfect compromise. And just as Rain promised, he wore the shirt that Phayu had stolen, so during the times he was gone, Phayu could still have him close.
The pair stayed up until Rain couldn’t keep his eyes open. His head bobbing forward and back as he tried to stay awake. Phayu followed Rain into the guest room, waiting until he was sure Rain was asleep before leaving. Tomorrow they both would have more energy, Phayu had a whole day planned. Having a full day to spoil Rain rarely happened, and he wanted to take full advantage of it.
Just as Phayu began to drift asleep, a strange scent filled his nostrils. A floral scent, laced with licorice. He sat up in bed, looking around. Even though he never smelled Rain’s true scent, he knew it wasn’t this. It was too strong, making his stomach churn. The only explanation, intruder. Phayu moved carefully towards his bedroom door. He placed his ear to the wood, trying his best to listen.
Whoever it was, was moving quietly. However he was able to catch the sound of someone walking. Their footsteps as light as possible. The scent began to get stronger, the first hint of them making their way upstairs. Phayu took a step back, bracing himself for them to open his door. His room was the first door, the first target. However the door didn’t budge.
Phayu’s heart dropped. Everything finally clicked in his head. A scent so strong it made him nauseous, alpha. Floral and laced with licorice, possibly female. Saturn. She was here, looking for Rain. Phayu didn’t have much time before she would reach the room that Rain was sleeping in. He rushed to his bedside, grabbing his phone. He sent off a few warning texts to his brother and Prapai, letting them know to call the police.
Only one alpha was going to make it out of this.
Without a second thought he rushed out of his room. He moved to the guest bedroom, throwing open the door. The sound woke up Rain, making the intruder jump and turn to see who had walked in. Rain’s eyes widened seeing Saturn at the foot of his bed. The light flashed on, making him close his eyes, opening them slowly to adjust to the new lighting.
Phayu was terrifying. His eyes were dark, narrowed, fully focused on the woman in front of him. Saturn smirked, crossing her arms over her chest. The look on her face, smug, unphased by the man in front of her.
“Get. Out.” Phayu spoke first. His voice was low, growly. Saturn rolled her eyes, dropping her arms.
“Get out? That’s all you got? Please.” She laughed.
“No. Get out while I’m still able to control myself.” Phayu warned.
“Ooo~ Control yourself? I’m so scared. That is definitely something I have never heard before.” She mocked. Her voice was grating to Phayu’s ears. He never wanted to hear it again.
“Listen Phayu. I know you probably want to kill me, but do you really want to do that in front of your precious little Rain?”
Phayu glanced over at Rain, his eyes softening. Rain was frozen with fear, his whole body tense. The omega barely registered that Phayu was looking at him. Saturn took the tiny distraction, rushing forward, pushing Phayu with her whole body.
Phayu gasped, stumbling back. He reached, grabbing the door frame to keep himself from falling completely. Rain’s eyes widened, crawling to the end of the bed.
“Phayu!” He shouted. Saturn was right. Phayu did want to kill her. However he had no qualms about doing it in front of Rain. Rain was his.
“Aw, the big bad alpha can’t handle a small push?” Saturn grinned. Phayu glared at her, pushing off from the door frame to give himself more momentum. In one smooth motion he punched her in the face, moving to be in front of Rain.
“You talk way too much.” Phayu growled. Saturn clutched the side of her face, her skin already red from the foce of the punch. Rain watched Phayu closely, his heart pounding. Why was Saturn here? /How/ was Saturn here?
Phayu reached down, grabbing the collar of her shirt, lifting her, practically throwing her out of the room. Saturn gasped, groaning in pain as her body slammed into the floor. Rain knew he couldn’t move with them. Phayu could handle himself, having Rain follow would only be a hindrance.
The sounds of the two alphas fighting rang through the house. Rain could hear the grunts and shouts even once they hit downstairs. Rain was going to stay in the room, but when he heard a particularly pained shout from Phayu. The sound sent shivers down his spine, making his whole body go cold. He rushed out of the room, hurrying to the staircase.
Saturn was standing over Phayu, grinning down at him. Glass was shattered everywhere around him. The smell of iron filled his nostrils, smelling the blood before he saw it pooling around his head. Tears began to fall down his cheeks, his heart dropping. Saturn turned, looking at Rain.
“Oh poor baby, what did I say? He wouldn’t be able to kill me.” She said. Rain rushed down, trying to run past her to get to Phayu’s body. Saturn reached out, grabbing Rain’s arm, pulling him back. Rain shouted, struggling against her hold.
“Let me go! Phayu please!” Rain cried, reaching towards Phayu. This couldn’t be the end. Phayu couldn’t be gone. Saturn wrapped her arms around Rain’s waist, holding too tight to keep him against her.
“Let me go! Let me go! Please Phayu, Phayu wake up!” Rain struggled, clawing at the arms around his waist, trying to throw his head back to hurt her. The attempts to free himself only made Saturn’s hold tighter. It felt like he was being crushed.
“Get a good look little one. Look at what I can do. If you don’t want the same fate, you better come with me.” She said. Rain could hear the grin in her voice. He felt sick.
“Phayu!!” Rain shouted, tears flowing down. He watched Phayu’s body, hoping, praying to see any form of movement. Everything else faded away. Rain still struggled, but refused to look away from Phayu. His vision began to darken around him. His whole world shattering. How could he go on without Phayu?
“Let’s go sweetheart.” Saturn giggled, starting to drag Rain towards the door. Rain fought, punching her arms, clawing hard enough to draw blood. He wouldn’t go with her, he wouldn’t leave Phayu. Saturn struggled to keep her grasp on him. The two of them no longer focused on Phayu, completely missed him opening his eyes.
When Rain brought his attention back to the spot where Phayu’s body was, his eyes widening. The alpha was no longer there. Rain looked around desperately, trying to find Phayu.
“Let him go.” Phayu growled, the command forcing her to drop her tight grip on Rain. The omega gasped, quickly scrambling away from her. He was panicked, his heart racing. Phayu stood in front of her, grinning.
“Did you really think I would let someone like you kill me?” The look in his eyes made him look crazed, desperate for a kill. Saturn gasped, taking a step back.
“What’s wrong Sat? I thought you wanted to fight. Oh wait, could it be that you don’t understand how I was able to use my command on you?” Phayu’s voice was sickeningly sweet, dangerous.
“H-How did you-“ Saturn’s voice was cut off, Prapai and Saifah rushing into the living room, police following close behind them. She tried to run, Prapai grabbing her arms.
“I wouldn’t run away if I were you.” Prapai warned. As quickly as the nightmare had begun, it ended. Phayu talked with the police only as much as he needed to. He finished talking with them, rushing over to Rain on the floor.
As soon as he was within reach, Rain grabbed onto Phayu. Phayu’s eyes widened, kneeling down beside him. Without any thought Rain wrapped his arms around Phayu’s neck, clinging to him desperately.
“You’re alive.” Rain choked out, burying his face into the crook of his neck. Phayu wrapped his arms around Rain, holding him close. Phayu couldn’t hold back his own flood of tears. Rain was safe, Rain was holding him. Phayu rubbed Rain’s back, his hand moving to cradle the back of his head.
“I promised you forever.” Phayu said. Rain lifted his head, looking at Phayu’s face. The terrifying icy look he had just had moments ago was completely gone. He was looking at Rain with soft eyes, filled with love. The look making Rain feel safe and at ease.
“I thought I would never see you again.” Rain said, sniffling.
“It would take more than a glass hitting my head to take me out. If it was to protect you, a bus couldn’t even take me.” Phayu said. While he was completely serious, Rain couldn’t help but giggle at Phayu’s words.
“Silly alpha..” Rain chided, cupping Phayu’s cheek.
———
“I’m sorry, I’m a what?” Phayu asked, raising an eyebrow.
Everything had passed in a blur. Saturn had been taken away by the police. Phayu refused to go to a hospital for treatment, not wanting to be away from Rain even for a second. Saifah and Prapai both cleaned the mess made downstairs. That night everyone barely slept.
When morning came, a still calm came over the house. Rain could breathe again. It felt like the events of the night before hadn’t happened at all. The mess had been cleaned perfectly, not a single item was out of place anymore. They all were downstairs on the couch, when Prapai finally spoke up.
“An enigma.” Prapai repeated.
“I’ve never even heard of that.” Phayu said, crossing his arms.
“Neither had I. But they exist. Only one every generation. They’re so rare there’s next to nothing about them. But that’s the only explanation.” Prapai said, taking a drink from his glass of water.
“Phayu isn’t an alpha?” Rain asked.
“Nope. Mr. Perfect over here is better than an alpha.” Prapai teased. Phayu rolled his eyes.
“Prapai, I’m okay. The house is okay, Rain is okay. You can leave now.” Phayu said. Prapai gave Phayu a confused look, taking a moment to get what the man had meant. The look Phayu gave him made him shutter. Oh.
“Alright alright. I’ll head out. If you need anything let me know. Good luck Rain!” Prapai called out, rushing out the door.
“Phayu are you okay?” Rain asked, sitting next to him on the couch. Phayu nodded, his full attention now on Rain. The omega was sitting close, but not touching.
“Yes. I’m okay. But, are you?” Phayu asked. Rain nodded, leaning in close.
“You’re alive. I’m amazing.” Rain said.
“You hugged me last night, and let me hug you.” Phayu pointed out, still trying to hold himself back from touching his boyfriend.
“I know.” Rain said.
“I won’t touch you unless you tell me it’s okay…” Phayu said, his eyes searching Rain’s face. The omega smiled, leaning in to place a chaste kiss to Phayu’s lips.
“Kiss me Phayu.”
