Work Text:
“Hail Satan!” The middle aged man on stage yells, his fingers plucking the strings on his guitar. The band plays on as the crowd joins in praising Lucifer.
“This is just a song Cas,” Dean yells over the music. “This is dad rock. There’s no way they are actually satan worshippers. I mean, they have a whole album with songs named after Bible verses.”
“I disagree Dean,” Cas grunts out. “Something about this feels wrong.”
“When was the last time you went to a concert?” Dean shouts. “And this isn’t even that cool, there’s no fire or anything.”
“I never said it was the band. Just that something is happening here. This is the perfect place for a sacrifice.”
“You think someone needs to summon a bunch of middle aged-“ Dean takes a moment to actually look at the crowd. There are a lot more children here than he thought there would be. “There’s a lot of kids. Why are there so many kids?”
“We are at a zoo,” Castiel yells. “And it’s the middle of the afternoon.” Castiel squints as he scans the crowd. “I know this place seems unlikely but all there have been mutilations of animals here at the zoo, an entire crop of strawberries withered overnight, and there have been storms centered over this zoo. There’s something happening here.”
“Yeah,” Dean shouts. “A Mountain Goats concert!” Tired of yelling Dean pulls Cas out of the crowd towards the beer garden at the back of the open field. “Okay, first, it’s a zoo. Some punk kids came in and killed animals. Happens all over the place.” Dean grabs the beer he ordered and takes a drink. “And we are in Seattle. When is there not a fuckin’ storm here?”
“And the crop failure?”
“I don’t know man, crops fail sometimes.” Dean shrugs. “Now drink your beer and enjoy the dad rock.” Dean turns back to the band, bobbing his head to the music. “You know, this isn’t my usual thing but they aren’t bad. I could get into this band.”
“I’m telling you, I can sense demons here.”
“Well maybe you got it wrong,” Dean teases. “That dude has a saxophone? What is happening? Oh… oh, he’s pretty good. It’s like jazzy dad rock,” Dean laughs. “Yeah, this is pretty cool.”
“I didn’t get anything wrong,” Castiel insists. There are demons here! Something is going to happen.”
“Could you two shut up?”
Dean and Cas turn toward the voice to find a short, Asian woman, with dark wavy hair and a stern look on her face.
“Mind you business lady,” Dean snaps.
She moves towards them like a viper, ready to strike. She slides in between them and grabs Castiel’s beer. She takes a long drink, her throat working quickly as she swallows half of the glass. “I just wanted to see The Mountain Goats fellas. I don’t make the omens happen. Wish they wouldn’t. Would make it a hell of a lot easier to leave the house.” She takes another drink of her wine. “So shut the fuck up and let me enjoy this.” She pushes off of the bar and nods at them, taking Castiel beer with her as she disappears into the crowd.
“Who was that?!” Dean asks in a panic. We gotta find her. We gotta stop her!” Dean starts to rush after her but Castiel grabs him by the shoulder, his fingers grazing over the place where Dean used to bear his handprint.
“She’s gone,” Castiel says simply. He turns back to the bar and orders another beer. “We might as well stay. You seem to be enjoying the music.”
“Are you fuckin’ kidding me?! A demon just stole your beer and you just want to hang out?”
“Dean, shut the fuck up,” Castiel says with a smile. “I’m trying to hear the music.”
