Work Text:
JBW cafe was the kind of place that you’d only know about through word of mouth, hidden at a quiet corner of an avenue in Saiki’s college town. Saiki himself only found out about this cafe one time when he was commuting home, accidentally overhearing the conversation of the person who sat behind him on the bus. Coffee jelly was a keyword that got him to pay attention.
Ever since then, he’d been a regular at the cafe and getting to know the staff; He got along with the staff so well that they already memorized his order. One staff member really caught Saiki’s attention though: blue hair, red eyes and long nails that are almost always painted black. Kaidou Shun.
It’s been a few months since he was going there and about a month since he started being friendly with the staff, all of them greeting him like usual… but today seemed different, though he didn’t know why.
This was the first time he went there for coffee jelly that he actually had a conversation with somebody there, was when Kaidou first introduced himself to Saiki properly; A smile was on his face as he strikes up a conversation with the pink haired teen, because if he was going to see the same face for the days, months or even years to follow… he might as well get to know him, right?
“For Saiki, right? The usual coffee jelly and a small americano?” The blue haired teen behind the cashier asks and the boy mentioned quirks an eyebrow, but he smiles nonetheless as he nods.
“Thanks… uhm…” Saiki trails off, rubbing the back of his neck awkwardly after he hands the payment to the boy.
“You can call me Kaidou. We should really get some name tags around here” Kaidou jokes, giving Saiki his change with a wide smile “I’ve seen you for almost three months here and you’ve always ordered the same thing and all under the same name. Our day isn’t complete without you” he says.
“Ah, I see” Saiki answers, the smile on his face getting wider. His heart flutters, an unfamiliar feeling, but it’s something that’s welcome.
“ Don’t drag me into your tricks, Shun! ” They both hear, from what Saiki assumes is the kitchen, someone yells out. It sounded annoyed but the kind of annoyed tone you use for your friends.
“Shut up, Aren!” Kaidous yells back, turning around as he does so before looking back at Saiki innocently.
They shared a laugh before the pink haired teen went to go find a table.
The second time he went there for coffee jelly, it was when Saiki had an especially nice day; All the test papers from his midterms were returned to him with his results all passing with flying colors so he decided that it was a good day to get some coffee jelly after not being able to visit for the week.
“Hmm… would Kaidou be looking for me?” Saiki mutters to himself while on the way to the cafe, but he immediately stops once the words leave his mouth. The teen takes a deep breath to assess what he just said.
He’ll deal with it next time.
Saiki continues walking, a smile makes its way onto his face when he sees Kaidou sitting at a table with his back turned to the door and headphones on. He probably didn’t hear him come in.
He walks past the empty cashier, going over to Kaidou’s table and sitting in front of him. Kaidou looks up from his phone, the bored look on his face is replaced with a smile as he excitedly removes his headphones. “Saiki! How was your midterms? It was a pretty boring week without having anyone to really talk to.” he complains.
“Hmm? Did Kuboyasu go on leave?” Saiki asks, putting his bag beside him. He could’ve sworn that he saw the head of purple hair in the kitchen.
“No…” Kaidou murmurs, “But, like- y’know how he is.” he says, rolling his eyes. Saiki wasn’t able to warn the other that Kuboyasu was on the way to their table.
“At least say it to my face.” Kuboyasu says, looking directly at Kaidou with a glare. The blue haired teen just sticks his tongue out to mock him which makes Saiki let out a laugh.
“Hey there, Saiki. If you’re still getting the usual, you can hand the payment to Shun; I’ll head to the kitchen to get it ready for you.” Saiki nods, smiling at the purple head who hums in acknowledgement before turning back to go to the kitchen like he said.
“Sooooo, the test results?” Kaidou asks excitedly, nearly bouncing in his seat as he waits for Saiki to pull out his test papers.
“All passed and I even got the highest mark on one of them.” Saiki answers happily, showing his test papers to the bluenette. They end up talking some more, catching up with each other for a bit after the pink haired teen pays for his order.
The third time he went there for coffee jelly, it was accidental and on a rainy day; Saiki was thinking if he should head to the cafe or head home. He was deciding the pros and cons in his head as he walks aimlessly in the rain with only his umbrella and his audacity that’s protecting him from the tears of the sky.
For some reason, even when he wasn’t thinking about it, his feet lead him to the JBW cafe.
“Saiki! I didn’t think you would come here- with the rain and all, I assumed that you would’ve gone home by now” Kaidou greets him as he opens the door, gesturing for the other to come inside.
“We’ve got the heaters on and the cafe is more busy than usual…” Kaidou murmurs, looking back at the cafe that’s filled with more chatter than what Saiki is used to. One table isn’t occupied though, with multiple large teddy bears taking up the seats. “...but I saved one for you, just in case” he says, smiling at the other sweetly.
Saiki feels his heart flutter again and does those weird somersaults that everyone talks about when they’re feeling… *kilig? How else should Saiki put it- it was… it was something that he didn’t think that he would feel at all.
“Thanks, Kaidou. It means a lot to me.” Saiki says, following the bluenette back to the cashier so he can order. (They can’t resist talking over the counter as well, it wasn’t like there was anyone coming in anytime soon anyways. They had time to flirt converse.)
The fourth time he went there for the coffee jelly, Saiki was about to exit the cafe but he stopped himself. He didn’t have classes that day and was at the cafe from 11 AM up until 3 PM; He excused himself because he thought that he should go home and Kaidou agreed because being at a cafe for 4 hours talking to one person would be boring for Saiki.
The pink haired teen stopped himself because he can’t think of any reason at all regarding why he should leave. He liked it at the cafe; There was barely any people every time he went there, he liked the staff because they were always kind to him, they already had his orders memorized, and… and he really liked talking to Kaidou their coffee jelly.
“Actually… I take it back. I can stay here for longer- I don’t have anywhere else to be and I like it here.” He tells Kaidou, walking back to his table and waving to the older couple at the back of the cafe who he recently got acquainted with. They were here almost as much as Saiki was.
“Really? Don’t you ever get bored of seeing my face?” Kaidou asks jokingly, sitting back down with Saiki because there weren’t any new customers to attend to.
Saiki didn’t think twice about his answer. “I like your face.”
Kaidou and Saiki share a beat of silence, before the bluenette tries to brush it off and nervously continue the conversation. Saiki smiles, respecting Kaidou’s decision to not talk about it.
He suddenly realizes that their coffee jelly tasted even better than usual. He wonders why.
The fifth time he went there for the coffee jelly, it was when he was ordering something when something came into his mind. “Kaidou, do you want anything? I’ll treat you” he says out of nowhere. Kaidou stares at Saiki like a fish out of water.
“Oh- Uh… well- what?” Kaidou eventually gives up in forming a coherent sentence and Saiki shrugs, avoiding the other’s gaze because a blush was forming on his face.
“Y’know… I always get coffee jelly here and you always seem to have at least one always in stock for me, so the least I can do is treat you to one of your favourites” Saiki explains, smiling at Kaidou and the bluenette can’t resist but let out a breathless chuckle.
“Well… I really like the blueberry filled donuts here” He answers, and Saiki nods, paying for that as well.
Saiki had to head out early that day since he just dropped by real quick to get a snack for himself before he heads back to school for a group project.
Chiyo and Kokomi were both glaring at him when he came back with a small paper bag.
“What??? Why are you guys glaring at me???” Saiki asks the couple, confused at the glares he was receiving. “Did you guys want coffee jelly as well? I asked you if you did but-”
“No.” Chiyo answers, rolling her eyes and letting out an exaggerated sigh. Kokomi leans her head on her girlfriend’s shoulder as she speaks.
“I could smell the gay a mile away, Kusuo. You aren’t going to that cafe for the coffee jelly if everytime you come back to us we’re subjected to you talking about Kaidou.” Kokomi points out, and the pink haired boy waves them off.
“No way. I’m not… oh.” Saiki doesn’t even finish his statement, thinking about everything that’s happened as of recent.
“ ‘ Oh’, indeed, Mr. ‘ I like the coffee jelly there ’.” Chiyo says with a giggle, watching how the pink haired boy is suddenly all flustered and having a moment of gay panic.
Understandable.
Unlike the other times Saiki went to the coffee shop, this time he wasn’t going for the coffee jelly; This time it was for a specific someone: It was for Kaidou.
The day is finishing and quite literally about ten minutes to closing but Saiki makes it there in time, a bouquet of roses hidden behind him as he enters the cafe. “Kaidou! I’m a little late than usual, huh?” he says as he enters, looking at the completely empty store aside from the said boy and Kuboyasu who was probably at the kitchen taking a well deserved nap.
“Saiki~! Wait a minute, let me get the coffee jelly that Aren put away for you.” Kaidou says quickly, not giving Saiki a chance to speak.
The pink haired teen watches the bluenette who had his back turned to him with a smile, adoration and fondness all swirling in his heart. He takes this opportunity to place his messenger bag on the table near him and remove the coat he was wearing. He steps off a bit to the side, the bouquet still behind him, so he can see what Kaidou is doing since the side of the counter is completely open.
Kaidou was on a stepping stool, complaining as he’s trying his hardest to reach the coffee jelly at the top shelf. “Ah fuck… Aren put it too high.” he murmurs, letting out a sigh and trying one last time by going on his tiptoes.
Saiki doesn’t like where this is going.
“Kaidou, I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Saiki says, concern laced in his voice as he lets his hands fall to his sides.
“No, no… I got th- Whoaaaaa! ” The moment Kaidou tries to reach for the shelf, he loses his balance. He was prepared to meet the ground, but he hears quick footsteps and the sound of plastic crackling before he’s suddenly back on his feet. He opens his eyes and looks around, stopping when his eyes meet with Saiki’s.
“T-thank you.” Kaidou says, blushing brightly and letting out a breath he didn’t even realize he was holding. Saiki smiles at him, letting him step down so the pink haired teen can get it himself since he was taller than him and the stepping stool was the perfect height addition for him to reach the shelf.
Kaidou turns to the counter so he can get the register prepared for Saiki but he stops mid-way, realizing that the plastic sound from earlier was a bouquet of roses. He turns back to Saiki, but he was already beside him and placing the coffee jelly down and grabbing the bouquet.
“So… I’m sorry that you had to go up there to get my coffee jelly.” Saiki says, not even saying anything about the bouquet. Kaidou shakes his head feverishly.
“No! I’m sorry that you had to get it yourself… and that you also had to save me. It seems like you had plans and I might be delaying it.” The bluenette says, gesturing to the bouquet.
“Huh? Ohhhh, the bouquet” Saiki realizes, before handing the bouquet to Kaidou. “This is for you. I was late because the floral boutique was on the other side of town; I hope you like them. I was only planning to give these to you as a gift but I guess you can also take it as an apology for the whole thing…” Saiki says, a smile spreading across his face when Kaidou gently hugs the bouquet and looks at him.
“A gift for what, though?” Kaidou asks, not wanting to jump to conclusions. He didn’t want to get his hopes up.
“For being a great friend-” the bluenette’s heart almost breaks. “-and to show you that I’m serious about you” Saiki says and Kaidou looks at the other with a confused look.
“Serious about me?” He asks.
“I’ll be courting you! Well… I’m new to this dating thing and my friend told me that she courted her girlfriend before they became official… y’know, dates and stuff?” Saiki rambles and Kaidou giggles, watching the usually calm and collected boy suddenly start rambling and stumbling in his own words.
“Okay. I’ll let you court me, Saiki Kusuo. I’ll call you by your first name when I finally accept to be your boyfriend” Kaidou says, extending his hand out for Saiki to take. The pink haired boy does so, not really sure what to do; He decides that kissing the back of his hand would be the move.
“Alright, Kaidou” Saiki says, smiling at the other with their hands still linked together.
