Hayate had awoken from the sudden alarm sound coming from his phone; jumping up in bed and clumsily turning it off, almost dropping his phone in the process. He exhaled softly to calm down his racing heartbeat before staring at the time.
10:30 am
Why was he pushing himself up to early? It’s a Saturday. He contemplated to himself, trying to remember why he put the alarm. Suddenly his phone vibrated and the screen lit up.
Mima-san
Good morning, Hayate-san.
“That’s it!” He shouted, shuffling out of bed and standing on his feet. “My date with Mima-san!” Even muttering the words date made him flustered. Was it a date? Takayuki just asked him to accompany him to the park to visit the scenery. Hayate could feel the warmth rise to his cheeks as he imagined, walking hand and hand with his partner while they walked around the sunny park. He quickly shook his head as his heart felt like it was going to beat out of his chest if he kept thinking about Takayuki. Grabbing his phone, he unlocked the device and went to his messages.
Hayate
Good morning, Mima-san!
It didn’t take long for a reply from Takayuki.
Mima-san
Hello, how are you, Hayate-kun?
Hayate
I’m okay
I just woke up
Mima-san
Just now?
Hayate
Yes?
Is that bad?
Mima-san
No, no
I’m just accustomed to waking up early, so I woke up about an hour ago
I think I’m also very excited about today, my body automatically woke up earlier
The darker brunette felt like his heart was struck once again by cupid. He couldn’t contain his smile as his face turned a deep scarlet. He quickly typed out his final responses before turning off his phone.
Hayate
Im glad you’re excited
I’m excited too
I have to go get ready, so I’ll be right back
He placed his phone down on his bed and as he went to go get ready for the date.

After leaving his apartment (and accidentally forgetting his keys the first time), Hayate went out into the city. He walked between people chatting, busy on their phones and rushing to different places. He got closer to the park which wasn’t too far from his apartment, entering the grassy domain full of other couples and people walking their dogs. He sat down on a bench and began to wait, his hands resting on his lap.
With minutes passing, he got nervous. What if Takayuki doesn’t show? What if he just got stood up? No, Takayuki wouldn’t do that.. He began to overthink before a velvety voice ushered his name.
“Hello Hayate-kun, sorry if I’m a bit late.” Hayate glanced up and saw Takayuki.
“M-Mima-san! No, you’re completely fine, I got here not too long ago.” He said in return, getting up from the bench; he smiled nervously while fiddling with his thumbs.
Hayate looked at Takayuki, he was dressed casually but it still looked so formal and mature on him. He had a white button up shirt on with a pink vest that hugged his chest. With dark trousers and a turtleneck. He looked elegant while his dark eyes that stared at Hayate with this sense of adoration, it made his heart flutter. Hayate felt a bit underdressed with his jeans and dim light blue colored hoodie.
Takayuki smiled and cupped Hayate’s cheek with his hand, leaning in and pressing a simple kiss on the others lips. Hayate flinched slightly but soon relaxed as his face heated up. Carefully he pushed away after a couple seconds, “We’re in public..” Hayate was still nervous being completely lovely dovey in public, his anxiety gets the best of him.
“Right, my apologies. You just looked.. stunning.” Takayuki muttered softly near Hayate’s ear which lead to a shiver running down his spine. The older man was always sharp and quick with his words, even if they were simple mistakes, there never seemed to be a flaw. Hayate really admired him. “Well, shall we?” Takayuki held out his hand as he tilted his head towards the park. Hayate grinned and nodded, slipping his hand into Takayuki’s and intertwining their fingers slowly.
The two began to walk through the park, hand in hand. They walked past multiple different people like different couples on benches or on picnic dates, people walking their dogs (which Hayate would sneak glances at in awe, animals were always his soft spot. Takayuki would admire Hayate as his eyes beamed at them) and people jogging.
“So how has university been?” Takayuki began a conversation, as much as he enjoys sitting in silence with Hayate. He wonders about what happens in his life all the time.
Hayate was slightly caught off guard by the question but he thought for a moment before replying, “It’s the same as always, my classes are very regular but after we started dating Kurosaki stopped asking me to go to group dates, so thats a good thing.” He says pretty bluntly with a small chuckle. “Honestly.. I’d rather be with you than anyone else..” He mumbled, scratching the back of his neck with his free hand as warmth reach his face.
The older man’s face turned red as he wasn’t expecting those words; his eyes drifted to the ground for a moment before returning to face Hayate’s, “Me too.” He agreed, squeezing the others hand.
Following a path in the park that leads to a flower garden, Hayate and Takayuki stare at the beautiful flowers grown on the certain patch. “What beautiful flowers.” Takayuki began in amazement. He let go of Hayate’s hand to bend down and touch the gentle petals of the flowers. His fingertips lightly dancing on top of the velvety texture.
He felt a sense of tactility with the flower.
“White carnations.”
“Hm?”
“The flowers, they’re white carnations.”
“How do you know that?”
“I saw it in a picture book when I was younger.” Hayate said while kneeling next to Takayuki, doing the same act as him. Caressing the white petals as he looked at them with a soft gaze.
Takayuki couldn’t hold back his smile as he stared at Hayate. He couldn’t hold back the thought of how idea how cute his partner was. Hayate seemed to glow right in front of him like the shining sun in the sky but it was strangely darker than what it once was when they got there.
“It had its meaning next to it, something like.. pure and sweet love.” He continued his small recollection of memories of the book. “I was always interested in the idea of how flowers can symbolize different things, it was something new to me. Something I tried to understand.” He rambled quite a bit before realizing. “Wait, t-this is- sorry..”
The older man chuckled and shook his head, “No, it’s okay. I enjoy listening to you talk. It’s very soothing.” He said with a soft smile. “I was just thinking about how I felt like somehow..” He inched closer to Hayate, shortening the distance between them. “ We, correlated to this flower.” Hayate’s breath hitched as Takayuki leaned in for a kiss.
Suddenly droplets of water landed on their faces at different speeds until it got intense. They both stood up asHayate tried to cover himself with his arms with no avail and Takayuki panicked, staring at the sky while the rain drops rolled down his face.
That’s why it was dimmer..
Takayuki looked around and noticed a gazebo nearby, “Here, Hayate-kun!” Takayuki grabbed one of his arms and pulled Hayate with him, running through the path towards it. As Hayate followed along, he heard the splashes their shoes made when they hit the appearing puddles on the concrete. Everything was suddenly fuzzy for the both of them as water got in their eyes, their hair was getting soaked and clothes completely drenched. Takayuki lead them underneath the gazebo that the park had, listening to the rain hit the roof of it.
The older man frowned with a defeated expression on his face. “I forgot to check the forecast this morning, I didn’t know it was going to rain.. I’m sorry Hayate-kun.” He glanced at the ground in embarrassment, knowing that Hayate must be angry with him. Maybe even annoyed at the idea of wasting his time to come onto this date leading to this disaster. But instead he got a response of bubbly laughter leaving Hayate’s lips. Takayuki looked up in confusion, his eyes gazing into Hayate’s as he continued to laugh for a couple more seconds.
Once he calmed down, he smiled brightly. “That was fun, it was kind of adventurous.” He admitted with a smile, “Even though our clothes are completely wet..” He chuckled again. “It was fun. Running in the rain with you, hand in hand.” He felt his face flush vibrantly, the warmth evening out the eventual cold feeling going through his body.
Takayuki blinked before grinning, he cupped Hayate’s cheek and kissed him. Hayate let out a small noise in surprised but he soon relaxed and kissed back. The kiss got passionate as they embraced each other, rasher movements going past them. They soon part, the empty feeling present as both of them stare into the nature. They watched as the rain poured, landing on the ground and on flower petals. He hadn’t had noticed it before but the gazebo was surrounded by white carnations, the vines of the flowers curling around the rails and spreading around the structure. Takayuki grasps Hayate’s hand making the other smile.
Not long after, the rain soothes and comes to a end, leading the two to stand up and walk out of the gazebo. “We should get going before we catch a cold. We’ve been drenched for too long.” Hayate says with a shiver. Takayuki agrees but before that, he looks at one of the flowers and picks it, handing it to Hayate.
“I love you.”
Hayate could feel his heart flutter, his cheeks warmed up as he took the flower and averted his gaze with a sheepish expression.
“I love you too.”
