“This is it. I know this is it, Taelia, I can sniff it.”
“Yeah, like you sniffed when you said no one is in the house we were breaking in that one night and we were standing in front of the wife of a fucking guard, Flynn.”
Flynn chuckled at the memory and scratched his nose. “Aaahh, good times. She was a sweet lady.”
Taelia rolled her eyes and let herself fall on one of the chairs around the table, on which Flynn currently packed his backpack. Without paying attention to her annoyed grimace, he held up every item he packed and grinned at the young woman.
“I’ve got sandwiches, I’ve got two bottles of ale, I’ve got a sweater in case he get’s cold, I’ve got two pieces of cake and-“ He put out a small box out of his pocket and his grin widened when Taelia’s jaw dropped. “I’ve got the ring.”
“You are going to propose?!”
Flynn snapped the small box open, revealing a simple, yet beautiful silver ring. Flynn was proud of himself every moment he looked at it.
“Damn, you… I-… are you sure?”
“Very sure.”
He gave Taelia the box who stared at the ring in awe and then quickly handed it back. “But in the corn maze, Flynn, are you really sure you-“
“I am. I wanted to ask him last week, at the harbour, but I didn’t have the nuts for it.”
Flynn sighed, remembering his beautiful plan and also the perfect moment to ask him – the romantic mood, the tale about true love and everything – and then he got cold feet. What if Mathias said no?
Flynn quickly shook his head. No, he was sure Mathias would say yes. He would ask him to marry him, Flynn Fairwind, hello? Who would say no to Flynn Fairwind, right?
…right?
“Are you two going on a picnic?”
Both Taelia and Flynn jolted upward, jumping literally an inch into the air. Flynn almost dropped the box with the ring inside but caught it quickly enough to stuff it back into his pocket. Mathias stood in front of them, placing some folders on the table and eyed first Taelia, then Flynn, both standing there as if they were caught doing something shadowy.
Mathias sighed. “Do I even want to know?”
“Well, you are going to find out soon enough.” Flynn threw a glare at Taelia, who cleared her throat and grinned at him, getting her bag with a shrug and waved playfully. “I’ll leave you boys alone, have fun.”
Flynn found himself alone with Mathias, who watched Taelia leaving out of the door and then turned sharply around to gaze at Flynn. Gulping, Flynn, rose both hands and smiled nervously. “I, umm, prepared a surprise. For you. Not Tal.”
A surprised frown appeared on Mathias’ forehead, his green eyes widening in surprise and that adorable blush rising in his cheeks which Flynn had fallen in love with. Falling back into relaxation, Flynn stepped forward to grab Mathias by his hands and pulled him close, wrapping his arms around the smaller man and crooked a smile. “A trip, just you and me, and no one else. I brought a snack, some booze and a surprise.” He inclined his head to snatch a quick kiss and felt Mathias leaning into their embrace.
“Where will we be going?”
He sounded so awfully tired, and Flynn leaned back, studying the face of his love. He had bags under his eyes and knowing him, he probably hadn’t eaten much today besides a quick snack and too much caffeine.
“The corn maze in front of the town.”
A deep sigh from Mathias and Flynn knew he had fucked up. Dropping his head on Flynn’s chest, Mathias searched for Flynn’s hands, squeezing them gently.
“Just you and me, yes? It is crowded, Flynn. All of Stormwind will be there.”
Flynn leaned his head forward to nibble on Mathias’ ear, just to flinch him away from the touch and glare at him red-faced. Flynn chuckled at that.
“Please, Mattie… humour me. The maze is huge, we won’t meet anyone. It will be just you and me.”
He kissed him again, planting kisses on nose and cheeks until Mathias sighed against his lips and squeezed his hands once more.
“Alright. But you better have a good surprise for me and nothing which will cause me to do more paperwork.”
Flynn crooked a smile and nodded. “Pinky promise.”
He saw the corner of Mathias’ lips twitching up for a single very second before he let go of Flynn and put up his broody face again. “Alright. When will we leave?”
“Right now, sweetie.”
Mathias squinted is eyes and put up a single finger. “Do not call me sweetie when we are in public.”
Flynn chuckled, leaned forward and pressed a kiss on the warning finger. “But I will call you all the nice names when we are not in public.”
Another groan and Flynn felt his heart widening, knowing that this was what he wanted to have – Mathias, in their home, shared evenings together, kisses, playful banter and that forever.
Their walk to the corn maze was relatively quiet. Mathias usually didn’t allow to hold hands with him when in public and this also was the case today. It was already evening and as the sun was setting Flynn put up the collar of his coat, noticing Shaw scowling around and more than one traveller looking scared. Flynn chuckled and despite knowing that it would make his lover furious, he grabbed Mathias’ hand and started pulling him faster.
“Oi-! Flynn, what-“
Flynn chuckled and started to run. Mathias tried to wiggle his hand out of his grasp, but Flynn knew that if he actually wanted, he could, so he took it as good sign. He stopped when they were in front of the massive corn maze, which had been planted there with the help of local farmers and a lot of help from local mages. More than half of it was probably an illusion but that wouldn’t harm the cause.
His proposal wouldn’t be an illusion or a lie. It was him, Flynn Fairwind, speaking the truth out of his heart. Flynn had never been as scared as now.
An annoyed sigh next to him made him switch back to the present and Flynn quickly pulled Mathias closer to himself, passing past a group of local youths and started to walk into the mace. As if a cloak was above them, all noises were suddenly gone and as predicted, they were alone. The walls of the corns were so high that Flynn couldn’t even see Stormwind castle anymore and he quickly went forward to grab both of Mathias’ hands, who eyed the corn warily.
“I heard the mages would do their work here, but they really outdid themselves.” He frowned, and looked around suspiciously. “This is also perfect for an ambush.”
Flynn snorted. “By the Tidemother, Mattie, relax.” He reached out and gently pulled Mathias’ chin to the front, kissing him gently. Even if Mathias relaxed into the kiss, Flynn still felt the stiffness in the other’s body and tilted his head.
“Has today been extra stressful?”
He wouldn’t ask if the day had been stressful, he knew Mathias set one foot into the office and be bombarded with problems of others he had to find solutions for until he somehow escaped from that hell, coming back to his arms in their flat. Well, Mathias’ flat. Flynn had just moved in.
“There is that Masquerade Ball tomorrow in the Palace Garden and the security needs to be top, but so many of the guards are laying down with the flu.” Mathias sighed deeply and wrapped one arm around Flynn, resting his head against his shoulder. Flynn immediately felt important and grinned at his lover, kissing the top of his head.
“Thank you for bringing me out here, I guess. It is so unbelievable quiet, it’s wonderful.”
Flynn lead him deeper into the mace and they only rarely met other people, usually couples themselves. It became chilly and dark, and lighted pumpkins and torches guided them through the maze and the fact that Flynn was already totally lost shortly after the beginning was only due to the fact that he was so incredibly nervous to propose. At least that was what he told himself.
When they turned into another dead-end, Flynn bit his lip nervously and heard Mathias sighing deeply. “Alright, now let me do this, alright.”
“No, you’ll spoil all the fun.”
“Fun?” Mathias perked an eye at him. “Where’s the fun in getting lost?”
Flynn rolled his eyes and reached his hand to pull him at his chest. The slight blush on Mathias’ cheeks was warming his own. “Well, you get lost, Mattie, and then your love will search for comfort in your arms…” He leaned forward to kiss Matthias’ cheek, tracing a line with kisses until he reached his throat. He felt Mathias twitching under the kisses, but not pulling back. “And then you-“
“Spymaster! What a funny coincidence.”
Flynn groaned but Mathias was fast in getting out of the hug, spinning on his heels, and becoming his usual, professional self. Flynn however looked up, not able to hold back a glare towards Anduin. King or not, the only majestic thing about that boy was his ability to cockblock him.
“Majesty!”
Anduin looked amused to Flynn and Flynn just knew that the little brat knew exactly what he was doing. Mathias however, was oblivious and stepped towards the King, looking over his shoulder at Wrathion, who stood there with a knowing smirk and in his usually chilled behaviour. Mathias huffed at his sight.
“Where are your guards, majesty?!”
The little shit was disguised as a local, Flynn had to give him that at least, but he knew that Mathias wouldn’t let the boy get away with this. If he had been smart, Anduin would have taken his ‘advisor’ and run off as soon as he had caught sight of his spymaster, though Flynn’s itching nose told him that the boy was up to something. And now Mathias would make sure to drag his sorry ass back to the castle and Flynn’s private night out with the Spymaster would be… poof. Gone.
With a sour look, Flynn crossed the arms in front of his chest while Anduin beamed cheerfully at Mathias.
“Oh, come on, Shaw, I am here for the same reason you are here. Getting the head free.”
Mathias groaned and rubbed his forehead. “My King, you…”
“Hmm, what do you have in your bag there, Fairwind, are you two on a picnic? I’m a tiny bit hungry.”
If that boy wasn’t a king, he would grill him, literally if possible.
“My majesty, you-“
“Anduin, maybe we should-“
Flynn and Wrathion both raised their arms to Anduin, but the boy already slipped through their grasp and stood in front of Flynn, who snarled at him quietly through gritted teeth.
“You are ruining a perfect plan, my ‘king’…”
Anduin looked up at him with a smirk and leaned forward to whisper to him. “A proposal in the corn maze? Fairwind, you can do better.”
Flynn blinked, paled and then groaned loudly when he connected the dots.
He would so grill Taelia first!
“I got a better idea for tomorrow at the Ball, Fairwind. Be there and I’ll help you get your man.”
What?
With a disappointed expression, Anduin turned around and shrugged, walking back to Wrathion’s side. “Hmm, not enough to eat. Maybe we should all get to the Pig’s and Whistle?”
“No! I will bring you home, by the Light.”
And with that, Flynn watched his lover grabbing the king ungently by his arm and turning only briefly to Flynn. “I’ll see you back home… sorry.”
Flynn gave him a smile and then found himself alone with Wrathion, who stepped next to him, watching the other two disappearing around the corner.
“I should have known Anduin is up to something. He was adamant in coming here.” He sighed dramatically. “I feel misused. You must help me teach him a lecture.”
Flynn opened his bag and opened the two bottles of booze, offering Wrathion one who clanged his bottle at Flynn’s as toast.
“And in return, I will help you get your man.”
Flynn almost choked on his beer, wiped over his mouth and stared tomato-red at the dragon. “Seriously- does whole Stormwind know this?! I will kill Taelia!”
Wrathion chuckled and then took a sip. “Oh, please don’t. She is an excellent informant of mine.”
Flynn scowled but Wrathion nudged him friendly. “Alright, my friend… listen to me. First of all, we both will need to do a little shopping.”
Flynn perked a brow and seeing Wrathion’s smirk he was afraid that he wouldn’t get out of this so easily.
