Worth Your Weight in Gold

Summary:

You weren't supposed to know anything about Fabian Aramais Seacaster. Other than the odd rumor about a group of Aguefort students causing trouble, normally your paths would have never crossed to begin with– if you hadn't gone and died.

OR

Your current job is to keep Fabian Aramais Seacaster from dying. But he doesn't make your job very easy for you.

Notes:

My first ever fic so constructive criticism is appreciated! So little fabian/reader exists so I took it into my own hands. Sophomore year, follows canon but very loosely.

Chapter Text

You weren't supposed to know anything about Fabian Aramais Seacaster. Other than the odd rumor about a group of Aguefort students causing trouble normally your paths would have never crossed to begin with– if you hadn't gone and died.

You hadn't gone to Aguefort, no need for school when you were learning enough from life already. You knew how to steal, you knew how to lie, you knew how to survive. You knew how to survive– until you wound up in a bar fight somewhere just south of Elmville, after admittingly having caused it by trying to steal from a Barbarian there. Then the next thing you knew you were in a very hot, very uncomfortable place.

Of course, you should have realized that in hell there isn't any need for gold. Of course, you should have realized that the stealing was probably what ended you up there in the first place. Of course, you should have NOT stolen from what looked like an insane pirate prince of hell sitting on a giant mountain of money. The worst part was you should've never EVER gotten caught stealing from him… rookie move really.

However, you did do all of those things, and ended up in front of Bill Seacaster, who gave you the options of either watching him pull everyone you ever cared about down to meet you slowly and painfully, or to work off the debt you now owed him.

You silently wish to yourself that you chose the former as you watch from across the street as a small halfling man hands Fabian a folder in a darkened alleyway.

Being forced to follow the spoiled boy around and make sure 'His light doesn't fade 'fore his grand exploits succeed!' was your only job from old William, and it was mostly just very boring. The only plus– other than not dying or having your loved ones killed– was you did get access to any spells you needed and didn't already have.

You watch him speed off on the hangman and cast locate person, not bothering to follow him. He probably won't need your 'saving' today.

——————————————————————————————————

The next day rolls around and you wake up in your small apartment and start your morning routine; get up, brush teeth, get changed, scry on Fabian, get ready to go wherever he is currently. Your quick Locate Person says he's still at his manor of a house (the rich prick), so you take your time getting all of your stuff together.

After heading to his house and waiting (for much longer than you think it should take) for him to leave he finally walks out, strutting around as usual. He gets on his bike and starts driving to Mordred Manor, which you've put together is where most of his adventuring party lives now.

You watch from across the street at the gas station as he meets up briefly with his party and heads off with his Half-orc friend (Georgug?) to Aguefort and scry on them recruiting 2 other students for…
Oh no. The Bad Kids are going on a quest? No no no. You just got into a routine and now you have to pick up your life to follow a rich spoiled brat adventurer across country lines without him even knowing!? Fuck that. No amount of gold being payed off is worth leaving your whole life behind, in fact, if Bill wants his 'darling boy' to be taken care of, he should do it himself. You're going home.

——————————————————————————————————

You fall asleep that night a little more restless than usual, blaming it on the stress of having to find a way to confront your... Patron? Employer? but your dreams that night are.. Strange.

You feel your pockets burning and take out the gold in them, throwing it away as it burns your hands. You suddenly feel yourself falling, as if being dragged under the ground, and see the pile of coins you stole from underneath you, rising bigger and bigger, before falling into it like water and feeling them boil and burn you alive.

You wake up in a cold sweat, with a strange feeling for the day ahead, and a coin on the floor by your bed. As you go to pick it up a scroll explodes out and an (unfortunately) familiar voice booms across your room.

"HA HA HA! GETTING PACKED FOR YOUR TRIP?"

Notes:

First chapter ever done! Not a lot of talking yet and I know it's really short but I hope you guys like it :) I have a lot planned for this hehe. You guys KNOW that William's gonna have something to say about your "resignation"
