Swap-Meat

Summary:

Hannah switching vessels so that maybe Cas will want her.

Notes:

Prompt was “Swap-Meat.”

I think a lot about the motivation of putting Hannah in a male vessel. I get it, he was right there but why did the writers put a male vessel there to speak so kindly to Castiel? The brain rot is deep. I don’t know what else to say.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Hannah swore she would never take another vessel. Not after seeing the pain it truly caused them. Vessels are ripped from their lives and loved ones to serve heaven. They die without any thought from the angels. Hannah couldn’t do that to anyone. She didn’t want to. Not again.

But Castiel.

She knows he won’t take the news of being barred from Heaven well. Of course Hannah trusts the other angels to deliver the message but, as deeply as she cares for Castiel, when it comes to anything to do with The Winchester, she doesn’t trust him not to kill to get what he wants.

And she won’t be the reason another vessel’s family is left wondering, praying for a miracle to the very people that took the person away in the first place.

So she takes the vessel of the angel she left at the gate. Seeing Castiel smile when he looks at her brings back feelings she hasn’t thought about since she left earth.

“Hello, Castiel,” she says.

“Hannah,” Castiel responds, with affection and warmth in his tone. His eyes, not that of a warrior but a man seeing someone he cares for.

Hannah wonders if maybe Castiel had never met The Winchesters, if he had never met Dean, if he would not only look at her with affection but touch her as well. For a fleeting moment she imagines that she could stay in this man’s body and kiss him the way she did once before. Maybe this time he would forget about Dean and stay with her.

But it’s not meant to be.

“I swore I’d never occupy another vessel but… we need to have this conversation face-to-face,” she explains.

Castiel tilts his head slightly in confusion. She always found it endearing when he did that. “What conversation?” Castiel asks.

She takes a deep breath. She does miss the grounding sensation she feels when she breathes in a vessel. “What do you want in heaven?” Hannah asks.

She must do what is best for Heaven, even if it means breaking her heart. Once she’s back in Heaven, out of this body that still doesn’t make Castiel want her, it won’t hurt as much. Afterall she doesn’t have an actual heart in her true form, only in this meat.
