Quizzes by the fireplace
It was a cosy autumn evening. The leaves had turned red, orange and yellow, the sky was a perpetual rainy cloud and the halloween decorations were starting to pop up everywhere.
Heesung had a few days off and so did his boyfriend. So they were both lazing around the house, making the most of the few days of rest they had.
Yoongu was lying on his belly, on the carpet, just in front of the fireplace. He was watching videos on his phone, Heesung didn’t mind at first, until he realised he was watching, yet again, compilations of Jaekyung’s best finishing moves.
He pouted at that. The whole reason they had noticed each other was because they were both dealing with unrequited feelings at the time and found comfort in one another. Him towards Kim Dan and Yoongu towards Joo Jaekyung. It was way more than that now, they clicked instantly and in the end, fell in love. Heesung couldn't ask for a better boyfriend. He had always hoped to find his soulmate and Yoongu was exactly that for him. They had banter, complicity and chemistry. It was perfect.
But even though the younger man had told him, multiple times, that he just admired the champion and there weren’t any lingering feelings anymore, he couldn’t help but feel a little jealous. Jaekyung represented something that Heesung could never be to him, and he didn’t like that. Anyone else would have been fine, but him.
So, feeling a bit insecure, and wanting his boyfriend to be reminded that they were a perfect match, he had a great idea. He had recently seen a video where a couple took different tests online, the couple had gotten almost all perfect scores and it had seemingly brought them even closer. He was confident it would be the case for them too, so he grabbed his pc on which he had opened multiple tabs with different quizzes and sat down next to Yoongu, who turned to look at him when he felt his presence.
“What’s up?” He asked, taking off one of his earbuds.
“Let’s do something for fun.” He grinned.
“What is it?” Yoongu sat up, looking curiously at his screen.
“Tests, to see how compatible we are.” He said nonchalantly. “It’s dumb, but that’s what makes it funny.”
He couldn’t just tell him, he genuinely believed in the truth of this test, that was embarrassing. Yoongu shrugged and the actor eagerly clicked on the first test.
The first one wasn’t a test, but more a reading of their zodiac signs, which concluded with a less than ten percent compatibility. And according to their “expert”, it’d be better to cut their losses short as soon as possible. As for their Chinese zodiac signs, it told them they had opposing views on life, and a middle ground would be hard, or impossible, to reach.
“Everyone knows zodiac signs are bullshit anyway!” He faked a laugh.
“I think the individual descriptions fit us well though.” Yoongu joked, and Heesung felt a pang in his chest. Did he think they weren’t compatible too, then?
The next one was a quiz on their personality types and how compatible they were. that one and the next, and the next. Even those about general knowledge of the other made him realise they didn’t know each other that well. The verdict was the same for all of them: they were not compatible. So despite the fact they were sitting next to the fireplace, Heesung felt strangely cold and lonely.
It had been his idea to start with, but now he regretted ever bringing the subject up. He genuinely believed they would get great results and was disheartened to see it wasn’t the case. Yoongu, who had been laughing off each result, was tapping away on the keyboard looking for another one. He seemed amused by it, more than anything.
“ Why is it so funny to him? ” he wondered. “ Does he not take our relationship seriously ?”
“Let’s try this one he said.” Clicking on a website.
“I don’t know… It stops being funny after a while.” He said lightheartedly, faking a chuckle.
This made Yoongu turn to look at him, frowning. Heesung avoided his gaze and went to close the laptop. Yoongu grabbed his hand and stopped his movement.
“Are you sad because of the results?” He asked.
“What? No way, these things are stupid anyway.” He snorted, still avoiding his gaze.
“Ok, if you say so.” Yoongu let go of his hand.
Heesung closed the laptop and went to put it on the table.
“I’m going to go take a shower.” He told him before leaving the room.
“Okay.” He heard his boyfriend say.
With a heavy heart, Heesung went to the bathroom. He undressed and stepped into the shower. He kept thinking back on all the negative results as he washed himself.
He knew he was being overdramatic, but he genuinely loved the other man. And as he had been the one to pursue him, he couldn’t help but feel insecure at times. He wished, Yoongu loved him as much as he did. He didn’t want it to end like all the other times where he was the one getting attached all on his own and ended up getting dumped.
He rinsed his body and got out of the shower, putting on his pyjamas. He still felt a bit down, so he would go grab his phone and call it a night.
He went to the living room where he had last seen it but as he arrived he was distracted by something else. There were blankets and pillows lying on the floor, in front of the fireplace. The lights were off, the room lit up by the fireplace alone, giving it a warm and cosy atmosphere.
“Ah, right on time!” Yoongu said, coming from behind him. “Take this and go sit down. I forgot the marshmallows for the hot chocolate.”
He followed the small frame with his eyes as it ran back to the kitchen. Smiling to himself. He knew Yoongu well enough now, to know this was his way to show him he cared. He wasn’t much for big declarations, but he never failed to show his feelings in the small everyday gestures. How could he ever doubt him? He wasn’t like any of the people he had met before, so there was no need to go in over his head, worrying.
He sat down in the middle of the pillow fort, putting the two mugs on the table. It was embarrassing to admit, but this was the kind of thing that just made him melt. Yoongu could do word for word what a teenage magazine advised and it would probably work on him.
Which wasn’t that surprising considering how he took those quizzes seriously earlier.
Yoongu came back, putting some marshmallows in both mugs. Once he was done, he sat down, cosying up between the actor’s legs. Heesung embraced him right away, resting his head against him and inhaling the scent of his hair. He loved it when Yoongu used his soap, it eased the possessive side of him.
“Wanna watch Jaekyung hyung’s match with me?” His lover asked, ruining the sweet moment they were having.
“Why can’t we watch one of my dramas instead, for once?” He asked, sulking.
“Why would I want to watch you kiss other people?!” Yoongu huffed.
Heesung couldn’t believe his ears, feeling way more happy than he should. Turns out, he wasn’t the only one that could get jealous, after all. He smiled to himself, feeling quite satisfied with himself.
“Stop smiling, you jerk!” Yoongu said, without even looking at him.
“You’re so cute.” He cooed as he kissed him all over.
“Ah let me go!” The athlete complained, but he didn’t make any effort to free himself.
Heesung chuckled as he tightened his embrace around his boyfriend. He felt so cosy and happy right now.
It didn’t matter what the tests said. All that mattered was that they loved each other, and didn’t mind each other’s little quirks. Like how Yoongu was too shy to admit he liked affection but would always reciprocate ten folds once he initiated. “ I’m really lucky. ” He thought fondly.
That night, they never came to an agreement on what to watch, but they did spend the rest of the evening cuddling and kissing, right by the fireplace.
