When you wish upon a star

Summary:

Ena wakes up somewhere she doesn't recognize.

Notes:

This is the same AU as "Faith, Trust, and Pixie Dust"

You don't have to read that one but it's going to put some things in context.

For the day 20 prompt "you will regret touching them"

Work Text:

"You idiot! Where's the next dose?!" A gruff voice says above her.

She opens up her eyes and sees a dark stone ceiling... a lab?

Where is she? Who is she?

"They're small, we can wait a bit!" Another voice says.

They don't realize she's awake. She sits up quietly and looks around, and over across the lab she sees Akito.

She doesn't know why his name comes quickly to her or how she knows that's her brother but it does, and when she looks at him she suddenly finds it hard to breathe.

Akito's dying.

"Oh, she's awake," one of the men behind her says. "Don't start crying again dearie, will put you back under soon."

She turns to them and growls.

"...let Akito go."

The man laughs at her. "Oh? And what are you going to do little one? You're still weakened from--"

"You will regret touching him," she says. She feels power welling up in her stomach, and it's like suddenly she's sitting in a pool of water and can see both above the water and under it.

She sees thin wispy lines of energy flowing around the men, and even more in the rooms above them, and Akito's is very very weak.

She doesn't even have to think about it, moving her hand to grasp and the wisps, and simultaneously ripping a needle out of her arm in the real world.

She leaps off the bed with more energy than she realized, and takes the wispy thing she took from the man and shoves it into Akito. He gasps and his eye open.

"Ena...?" he mutters, looking confused. "Wh-"

"Your name is Akito," Ena says, tearing up. "You're gonna be ok."

There are more footsteps and people run down. The man who Ena took the wispy stuff from is on the floor, his eyes wide in shock.

"Get her!" The other man yells and the guards advance on them.

The feeling of power happens again, and this time something bursts out of her, a dark wave that almost seems to put out the wispy stuff of everyone in the room except her and Akito.

No... not just the room.

Everyone in the building.

Ena's breathing heavily.

"E-Ena?" Akito asks. Ena shakily pulls the needles out from Akito.

"C'mon w-we gotta..."

And then she collapses onto the floor.

-

Akito struggles to pull Ena off the floor, up the stairs, and out of the building. It's raining when they get out.

A gut feeling tells him calling to help and drawing attention to themselves would be dangerous, so he tentatively looks around. There's a place where kids are gathered, getting bread from some adults. Akito steels himself and lifts Ena onto his back as best as he can.

He feels like he's seen someone do this before.

"H-help," he croaks out towards the woman in handing out bread, and her eyes widen.

"Honey! Ichika! Get some blankets and food!"

The woman ushers them into the house and sits them in front of the fire.

A girl his age shows up with a blanket while the woman brings them some bread.

"I-I'm Akito," he says, more to convince himself than really explain it to them. "This is my sister, Ena. We... woke up here."

The woman shared a look with her husband. "Do you know what happened to your parents?"

"No."

"Do you know where you are?"

Akito shakes his head again.

"You're in Shimizu," the girl says. "Sorry."

"Sorry?"

"It's dangerous here, you'll..."

"Ichika, enough," the woman says. "Let them rest, they can learn in the morning."

Ichika nods and goes to another room, and Akito stares at the window into the rain.

He can almost swear... he hears screams somewhere in the distance.
