"Hello!" Hashirama knocks on Mito's door, carefully balancing the bowl on top of his basket of fruit. "Can I come in?"
"Sure!" She sounds preoccupied but welcoming, not unusual when she's cooking, so he nudges his way into the kitchen.
"I brought fruit salad," the smells rising from the oven are fantastic, and he sniffs appreciatively. "And the apples you said you wanted!"
"Ah, perfect!" She pulls over a huge dish and slices apples into it as fast as he can hand them to her. "I made the crumble before, so all I need to do is spoon it over and..."
She slides the apple pie into the hot oven, right next to the one already in there, and Hashirama can't resist peeking.
"Egg pie?" Golden brown and dotted with herbs, it looks just as amazing as it smells. "Mito, you're a genius."
"I couldn't have done it without Izuna's chickens," she wipes her forehead with her apron, but her smile is sly. "And he brought over something extra too."
Something extra...?
That can only mean...!
"It's mushroom season already?!" Hashirama grabs her hands, gleefully dancing her around the kitchen table. "Mito! Mushrooms! Thank you!"
"Hey, those are my mushrooms!" Izuna sticks his head into the kitchen, and then squawks indignantly like one of his hens when Hashirama releases Mito to seize him instead. "Ack! Stop it, you madman!"
"Let my brother go!" Madara thumps him hard on the shoulder, and Hashirama does. "Mushroom season makes you crazier every year, I swear."
"No, he's always been like this." Tōka piles into the room, followed by Tobirama, clearly having roped him into helping her carry the wine and beer.
"Ooh! Is that the new batch?" Hashirama steals a bottle, holding it up to read the label. "It is!"
"Yeah, the first ones to be ready from last year's harvest." His cousin looks satisfied. "You'll be the first to taste it, as promised, since they were your grapes."
"Um, I hate to interrupt, but I think we have an extra guest." Hikaku calls from outside, but the announcement is rendered unnecessary when his words are interrupted by lowing.
They all head outside to find that yes, indeed, one of the cows has escaped from its pen. It's the baby, the one which loves Madara so much, and Izuna sighs as he fishes his bell out of his pocket, preparing to lead it back to its bed.
"Wait, don't." Tobirama places a hand on Izuna's wrist, and they all look at him inquisitively. "I read something about this."
Hashirama's brother steals a bunch of bananas from the basket, and approaches the cow slowly. He holds one out, and the calf eats the offered fruit with every sign of enjoyment.
"It works then," Tobirama feeds the baby a second banana, and it disappears just as fast as the first one, skin and all. "Bananas are apparently one of the fruits cows can eat, and particularly good for the health of the calves."
"Ha! Perfect!" Izuna looks triumphant, and Hashirama already knows where half his banana crop will be going for the foreseeable future. "Bananas for mushrooms!"
Well, if it's for mushrooms....
Hashirama pets the cow's soft nose, and lets it lip at his hand.
Yeah, that's a pretty sweet trade.
