Mike always complained when Robin came to the house, he accused Nancy of taking advantage of Robin being a girl to kiss her in her room. Nancy made fun of him, she retorted by telling him that he always invited Lucas, Dustin and Will to the house. Robin was there, she had heard everything, she liked Mike and he and Nancy were more alike than they wanted to be. that morning she was hanging out with him, she was getting the basement ready for Mike's campaign, she was going to stay to watch Holly today because Nancy had a job interview and Karen was going with her, god knew how much Nancy was nervous, Karen had promised to go shopping afterwards, either for bliss and to comfort her, they hadn't spent time together in a while. Ted was at work, but he liked to spend time elsewhere, he wasn't really made for children apparently, but he greatly underestimated himself, Robin felt a kind of sympathy for him, he needed to invest in his family, he seemed unknown with his children.
''Holly, will you tell me when you're finished eating your apples? I help Mike, but I'm yours when you can'' Robin spoke from the basement as Holly ate her breakfast. Mike grumbled as he painted a sheet of paper with 'Dungeon and Dragon' written in big red letters. paint dripped onto the chair and Robin winced, but she couldn't let go of the black veil she was tying on the ceiling beam.
''shit, Robin I only do shit, Will would have done this better than me'' Mike's eyes sparkled when he talked about Will.
''Robin, I'm done'' Robin heard Holly rushing towards the kitchen.
''Can I come there?'' Holly asked in front of the basement door.
"wait, I'll ask Mike." Robin finished hanging the veil on the beam; it's probably from the chair.
"Mike would mind if your sister came" he looked in disbelief and nodded as he took a cloth to wipe up the paint that had spilled on the chair.
"Come on Holly, come be careful on the stairs" warned Robin even though she knew full well that anyone could get hurt on the stairs the steps were uneven themselves once she almost fell. '
'if you want you can help us but be careful, Mike and I took a lot of time to do this''
Mike set up the game board on the circular table, he asked Robin to hang it with him on the opposite wall and Holly passed him the roll of adhesive paper. he put on his costume which had shrunk a little in the process but Karen had promised to fix it because he had grown so much during his summer vacation almost as tall as Robin. he smoothed his hair and turned towards them.
'' so ? Do I look good?'' Robin wondered if deep down he wanted someone to look good, or if he wanted to integrate his characters before starting to act. she gave her a thumbs up and smiled at him, he smiled back, awkward, but not unfamiliar. Holly rushed into her brother's arms.
''you look the best'' Mike gave her a high five and before anyone could do anything, the doorbell rang.
''excuse me ladies, my guest is waiting'' he ran up the stairs and rushed towards the door, Robin who was carrying Holly looked at who was there as they settled on the coffee table in the living room to start coloring . ''hey bro''
Dustin had arrived, he gave Mike a quick hug and entered the living room as usual Robin knew that style did not knock he entered directly under the constant black gaze of Mr. Wheeler. not sure if he was really there or if he preferred to knock but he headed straight to the kitchen and grabbed a can of soda that Karen had left for their friends. Dustin had arrived with a plastic bag under his arm, this must have been his disguise. Mike tell him to go change in the bathroom and start carrying the tray of cookies downstairs, to avoid Dustin eating everything before the rest of the party arrives.
" hey holly wait a minute I'm going to see Mike, stay good" Robin said as she walked slowly up the stairs knowing she was clumsy as hell and didn't want to risk getting hurt. Mike keeps looking at himself in the mirror and tucks a strand of curly hair behind his ear.
"Mikey," she smirked, he rolled his eyes at the nickname. '' look I'm not going to beat around the bush, I was wondering if there's something between you and Will?'' she knew she was being frank, Mike looked at her with wide eyes, but made a grimace of disgust.
''no absolutely nothing at all'' he stammered while blushing. ''yes he's my best friend, he was my first friend'' he shook his head, Robin understood that he couldn't talk about it.
"you know I think you're not the only one who thinks he's your best friend" she smiled at him, confident and reassuring, the way she had looked at Nancy as she explained why she had flinch or wince at Jonathan's name.
Mike looks down, he was about to speak but his look was already understood by Robin.
“Dustin stop rummaging in the kitchen I tell you Mike put the snacks in the basement” Nancy's voice caught Robin's attention she already came back in her interview. one didn't hear Karen's heels maybe I was somewhere else maybe not home yet, but she heard a soft and calm voice she hadn't heard all the words but she knew it was will.
"Mike I think so wait until you tell him what you think, I'm telling you I saw it" Robin patted him on the shoulder and went back upstairs. Nancy rushed into her arms, Robin picked her up, she kissed her and the shadow of her eyelashes on her cheeks made her irresistible. Robin felt her heart racing. '
'hi babe, so tell me everything'' Robin kissed Nancy's forehead and hugged her again.
''Hopper took me to interview people, it's investigative work, he said I was pretty good and if anyone spoke badly to me at the station, he'd give them a good word, but I I'm sure work with him is a good job, I mean, we fought a lot side by side.'' Will was in the kitchen with Dustin, talking him out of stealing the chocolate puddings.
''come on baby, you can come up to my room now'' Nancy started to undo Robin's tie.
''yeah, wait, did you talk to Will?'' Robin looked at the young man's shifting gaze towards her, she smiled at him when she knew he was looking at her, he waved at her.
"Yeah, but I think he's still scared." Nancy looked at Mike who was hesitating to come out of the basement. she approached Will and whispered in his ear ''remember, do as told, be honest'' she smiled at him and dragged Robin with her. they had time to see Mike approach Will and bring him to a private corner.
''Can I talk to you?'' Robin watched as Mike held Will's hand.
They were on the right track, she was sure of it. ''well done Nancy''
