Summary:

Fictober Day 28
"I may not get another chance to say this."

Prapai has an ask. Rain has a staring contest.

Work Text:

They’d been at the bar for maybe an hour, drinking steadily, but Rain was still pretty sure Prapai was pretending to be more drunk than he actually was.

“I may not get another chance to say this-”

“Oh my god, you are the most dramatic asshole I have ever met.” Rain propped an elbow on the bar so he could hold his head up and get a good look at Prapai. Why was he like this. “Why are you like this.”

Prapai, leaning backwards against the bar with both elbows propped up behind him so that he could survey the room with all of the gravitas and expectation of a prince, or maybe a minor lordling, hiccuped. Artfully.

“Flawless genetics and unmatched confidence. Anyway,” he went on, ignoring Rain’s groan, “I may not get another chance to say this before Sky and Phayu get here, so, I want to surprise Sky with something, and I need your help.”

Oo, a surprise, Rain loved surprises.

“I love surprises, what’s the surprise P’Pai?” Surprises surprises surprises. Surprises was a hard word when you said it more than once. Rain knocked back the last half of his bright pink cocktail, gazing into the empty glass forlornly. Empty. Tragic. He turned his puppy eyes on Prapai.

Prapai carelessly waved his hand at the bar behind him and Rain eagerly craned around to order a new drink. The Pain Killer looked fun.

“I want to take him on a day cruise,” Prapai said. He was looking out into the middle distance of the bar, doing that thing where his eyes glazed over because he was thinking about Sky and not actually seeing what was in front of him. “He was so cute when we found you guys out at that resort, with his little straw hat.” Prapai was smiling at the memory. “I think he’d like getting out on an actual boat.”

Rain nodded, realized Prapai wasn’t looking at him, and said “Yeah, for sure, absolutely, have you asked Sky how he feels about being on boats though?”

Prapai finally tuned in and turned to look at him, shaking his head.

“No, I have not, and this is where you come in. I need you to make sure he doesn’t have like, a debilitating fear of the open ocean or something before I take him out there. Also, if you could make plans to spend the weekend together so that he doesn’t plan anything else, that would be good.”

This made sense.

“That makes sense, phi, I can do that, I can- Oo!” The bartender slid Rain’s drink across the bar, completely derailing his train of thought. It was so big! And purple! And in a pineapple glass? That was fun, very cute, Rain loved a pineapple.

There was a wiggling at his elbow making a bid for his attention, but Rain was busy right now, so he brushed it off. This pineapple drink was so big he couldn’t get a hand around it. He wondered what made it purple. Was this like a food-dye situation, or a natural ingredient kind of thing? Why was it in a pineapple glass? It didn’t matter, he was into it.

“Rain,” came a voice at his elbow as the wiggling returned, stronger. “Rainnn, Rainy baby, Rainnnnnnn-”

Oh my god-

“Oh my god, yes, P’Pai, yes, I am listening, what?”

Prapai had his own set of big puppy eyes, and they were trained in full force at Rain. Wow, he could really make them big and wet, huh? So shiny. Shiny phi.

“You’re very shiny,” Rain told him solemnly. Shit, okay. Maybe Rain was more drunk than he thought he was.

“Yes, thank you,” Prapai said, still wiggling Rain’s elbow, but now it felt like he was doing it just because it was in his hand. Inertia or what have you. Was it inertia? “So you’ll do it?”

“Do what?” Rain didn’t think he could do anything right now, he had this big pineapple drink in his hands.

The wiggling intensified as Prapai heaved himself off the bar to get another hand on Rain. “You’ll make plans with Sky! And find out how he feels about boats!”

“Yes, yes, absolutely, for sure, don’t spill my drink P’Pai!” He was still trying to figure out what was in there, and he was doing it entirely by taste, he needed the sample size.

“Wow, it’s so purple, why is it a pineapple?” Prapai beheld the drink with wide eyes. Wow, he was so shiny.

“Exactly, why is it a pineapple?” Rain set his big pineapple back on the bar so they could both observe it.

This did not immediately yield any clues. But it did make Prapai realize his drink was also empty, and he leaned across the bar to order his own refill.

“Hey, what makes it purple, do you think?” Rain asked him, not breaking eye contact with the pineapple.

“It’s probably because it’s got ube in there,” Prapai said, washing up to squish in close next to Rain. This would only get him so far, Rain thought. You couldn’t really join a staring contest half way through, that was cheating. Also, what was ube?

“What’s ube?”

Prapai made a funny pfft sound between his lips, knocking his temple against Rain’s.

“Well, it’s purple, isn’t it?”

Prapai was right, the drink was purple.

“You two doing alright?” asked a cautiously amused voice behind them.

Rain swung around, crashing in slow-motion against Prapai, the bar, and into the arms that were suddenly thrown around him, trapping him in place. This was probably smart; he would hate to knock over his pineapple.

“P’Phayu! You’re here! Hey, what’s ube?”

Notes:

Drunk Rain is all questions and no answers, love that for him.

Ube (oo-Beh) is a type of yam, it is purple, and the Pain Killer (I’ve also seen it called the Pain Killer Cobbler) slaps severely but will also fuck you up. Drink responsibly 💕

Thanks for reading!

Hey y'all, on a more serious note, it feels wild to be writing and posting fic while the world is coming down around Palestine. If you can help or donate or reblog or call a representative or just pay attention to what it happening, I hope you do. I hope everyone is taking care of themselves, and if reading fic is a part of that for you, I hope this helps. Be well.
