Chapter 1: San Marino, California

Chapter Text

“What time is it?”

Toji yawned. He rose from the master bedroom’s king-sized bed. The strident alarm evacuated his cell phone as he rubbed his eyeballs and lazily searched for the location of the device.

It showed 8:00 AM.

Toji giggled to himself. He ignored how he could be able to be awake this early after a whole night of partying, drinking, and adult activities. He went to turn it off, but the content of the screen caught his attention.

“Reminder: Megumi’s school event in 2 days!”

“What?” A few minutes passed as confusion perfumed the air.

Then it hit him….

After failing to pay child support ten months in a row, His attorney told him, he must be more present in his son’s life and have irrefutable proof of it. This included events, birthdays with witnesses, and anything to fill his paper trail and shake off the deadbeat allegations against him in court. His lawyer beat the odds and struck a deal with the judge. Following the code of the law, they were threatening to swing all “suspected” murder charges on M. Fushiguro’s neck for all his missed payments finally having a legit motive to put this man behind bars.

Toji rolled his eyes. Most of his inconsistent income went to his attorney, the man who allowed him to escape jail once again. He made sure to pay him an acceptable wage, but it was so expensive—no way to break the terms of their agreement.

Now he must interrupt his “bought and paid for” work vacation if he doesn’t want to see his lawyer’s face again and cut him a check.

Toji reluctantly dragged his muscular naked body out of the sheet’s warmth. He sniffed his boxer who laid on the floor all night.

“Well… one day is not that bad….” Then, he proceed to slide into his black shirt and joggers from the day before.

“Toji… Don’t leave…”

A faint moan escaped the woman’s lips laying next to him. Fushiguro brushed off her grip preventing him from escaping the room, a smirk devoured his lips at the sight of the barely conscious woman.

“Aren’t you getting married soon?!” he scoffed as he collected his belongings. She pouted in response.

“One more time…” she begged.

Light laughter took over him.

“My job is over; I leave the rest to your fiancé”. She tried to protest but tiredness knocked her out back into a profound sleep.

“Girls with crazy rich parents are something…” he thought laying his eyes on the young woman’s undressed figure beneath the silk sheets. He scribbled his phone number and a tissue on the side bed table and walked off.

After leaving the room, he made abstraction of the few asleep female bodies whose cocktail dresses barely covered them. They lay unconscious surrounded by alcoholic beverages. Toji stepped on pink confetti and banners before reaching the gigantic entrance hall. It took an eternity.

At the sight of the fresh 2,000 US$ deposit in his bank account, he grinned at his phone. After stepping outside the property, his grin was wiped off clean when he realized his emergency plan flight back to Japan would devour most of his bachelorette party gigolo check.

He opened the taxi app on his half-charged cellphone.

“This more than half of my check!” he balled his fist. The idea of eating low-quality airport food instead of the Californian all-you-can-eat buffet he planned on going to before stepping on American soil.

A yellow car made its way towards him and passed a few mansions. The driver hesitated before stopping next to Toji as he didn’t expect a man like him in such a wealthy neighborhood.

“Los Angeles International Airport” he managed to word out after throwing himself inside the vehicle.

The driver ignored the man’s thick accent and his uneasiness. With shaky hands, he turned on the engine and drove off.

Toji chugged down a stolen water bottle from the mansion.

“I’ll have time to rest at the airport…” he thought to himself as he opened his phone searching for a plane flight back to Japan.
