Chapter 1: what home means to us

Chapter Text

Cold. That’s all Alexandr Lagusa could think about. Kicking him out of their house was one thing, but in the cold in his home clothes was just no mercy. Staring at the ground, Alexandr Lagusa realised that he was still wearing his red home slippers.
Walking to nowhere in particular, he recounted how he got kicked out.

“Alexandr! Are you ever going to get out of bed? Bring a royal doesn’t mean you can slack everyday!” His father shouted.

Sitting upright, he hollered back. “I do work! Just not in the day! Aren’t we vampires for god’s sake!”

That was a wrong move.

“That’s it, young man. That kind of attitude won’t get you a well paying job, and you barely pull your weight around the house. Get out!”

His father pulled him up by the collar, and threw him out of the house.

Oh, I don’t have a home now.

Walking let him clear his mind. Where would he go? What would he do? Finding himself in front of a chapel, he quickly scurried away, hiding behind a bush.

A person was there in the garden. He looked ethereal, the sun hitting his face in a glowing manner, a black cat snoozing lightly in his lap. The white Kuzuha had always observed this peculiar person, who somehow always made him feel at peace.

“Who’s there? You do have really pretty white hair, I’ve seen you around for quite some time.”

Peeking out from behind the tree, and there he could finally find his words.

“You…” Alexandr Lagusa mumbled.

“?” The person tilted his head, infuriatingly cute.

“Aren’t you afraid of me?” He continued, looking towards the ground, as if there was something very interesting on the ground.

“No? You’re Alexandr Lagusa, the young royal of the Lagusa family, aren’t you? Most noticeable by his white hair, other than that, a mysterious individual as his family blends in well.”

“woah, I didn’t know someone like you knew so much about me.”

“Pure rumours, I suppose. You never know the person, until you reach them. So, how can such a lowly priest serve your highness?”

“Oh, come on. I’m no highness, in fact, I just got kicked out from my home. How about you, the grand priest of this chapel, Kanae, whose only job is being a helpline for the townsfolk and exorcism, and somehow unusually dark and violent at times.”

“Don’t take them too seriously, come in and I’ll tell you more of my interesting self.” The priest said, laughing as he brought the noble in.

“Firstly, don’t call me your highness. It doesn’t fit me.”

“Alexandr Lagusa is a mouthful to say. Then, I’ll call you Kuzuha since you got thrown out like trash. But they don’t know what they’re missing out, because you have some treasure within you.” “You, do you have no shame? Shamelessly using a pickup line on a guy?” Kuzuha teased. “You don’t like it?” Kanae meekly replied, flashing a pair of doleful eyes at him. “You…” Kanae laughed at Kuzuha’s disgruntled expression. That was how they got to know each other, through playful banter and cozying up by the fire at the back of the chapel. It was peaceful these days, where he could be true about his feelings and thoughts without having to hide it behind royalty. Soothing, the serenity and presence of the priest let the vampire relax and almost become human. Through their routinely nightly strolls and helping others, Kuzuha learned to experience human emotions, happiness for someone’s success, relief at someone’s safety, grief at someone’s loss, anger at someone’s sin. It felt like what it meant to be, at home. Kuzuha felt comfortable here. At night, when thoughts of returning home threatened his sleepy mind, Kanae would somehow be by his bedside in an instant. It was as if he knew. More like, Kanae understood. He would gently squeeze his hand, stroking his fingers. When Kuzuha got overwhelmed, Kuzuha was welcome to crawl into Kanae’s bed, which Kanae would wrap him in a warm embrace. A human’s warmth was nice on cold nights. Kuzuha loved Kanae. It wasn’t just a one-sided love. Kuzuha helped as a sister in the church, occasionally helping to pick out verses in the bible which he fancied. Helping townsfolk was part of Kanae’s job, so meeting people with Kanae became a natural activity. Due to his ability to use mana power, Kuzuha became well liked by the townsfolk community, letting them have better compensation, free goods and items, and good friends they could rely on in general. Kanae loved Kuzuha. He liked to admire his silky white hair, occasionally run his hands through it when the vampire allowed it. He liked when the vampire was shy when asking for blood, enjoyed when he got the high from the vampire sucking his blood, thought fondly about how the vampire used his mana to help the healing on the wound while licking the leftover blood. His favourite part, the feather light kiss on the wound, that clearly spelled “thank you”. They had grown past the point of saying sorry. When he wondered how he would respond if the church found out he was housing a vampire, and voiced his thoughts, Kuzuha would tenderly intertwine their hands, careful not to scratch the priest with his nails. “I’ll be alright” He always said, but never let go of Kanae’s hand those nights. They weren’t sure of their relationship at first. When Kuzuha first kissed his neck, Kanae let out a small squeak, surprising the vampire. “Don’t humans do this?” “Yes, dear.” “Dear?! What?” “Don’t we humans do this too?” Kanae fought back a grin. One fine day, Kanae asked. “Kuzuha, have you thought of love?” “Where are you going with that thought?” Kuzuha knew the general meaning of the word, but he couldn’t figure out what the priest was trying to hint at. “Well, have you perhaps thought of the girls that follow you around every where you go?” “Not really, I mostly spend time with you. What, are you trying to make me say I love you? Fine, I love you.” Kuzuha supposed Kanae took it as a joke, but what met him was a blushing face of the priest. “Really?” The vampire sighed, pressing a kiss to the priest’s forehead. Seeing that the priest was about to cry, Kuzuha backed away. “You don’t have to feel the same way, sorry I forced it on you-“ Kanae rushed forward and placed a chaste kiss on his lips, and gave an cheeky smile, effectively shutting him up. “Like it? You’re going to get used to it in the future.” Kuzuha felt like crying from joy. There they spent their days loving each other.
