Work Text:
The October weather was cool. The breeze would be a small chill that would run through your body. The leaves were different colors as they fell from their trees from the smallest gush of wind that blew through.
People decorated in this time of year, and they decorated their homes quite spooky, but that's not the only thing they did. The carved pumpkins, dressing up, and on the last day of October the little children could go in their neighborhood and get treats to rot their teeth.
The smell of October always seemed calming. It smelled of pumpkin and warm drinks. The atmosphere seemed exciting and left a feeling in your stomach that couldn't be described.
Hitoshi Shinsou, a man who didn't need much to be satisfied with a simple day. Hitoshi did like the fall. The weather was bearable, and he had a better excuse against his husbands demands of him drinking so much coffee, saying it wasn't healthy. Though, Hitoshi doesn't think eating burgers all the time is healthy either.
Hitoshi was a writer. He much enjoyed the art of it. He wasn't a big-time writer, and he didn't hope too anytime soon. He didn't like people that much, and he couldn't imagine how people would react if he were a popular book writer. If he was, he'd live far from the city, somewhere him and husband could relax. Then again, that seemed to always be his plan.
See, him and his husband, Denki, liked being in the city. That's where their friends, and so did their family, live. Denki found the noises and loud talking of people more tolerable than Hitoshi did, but that could be because Denki lived in the city all his life, while Hitoshi mostly lived far from the city.
It was Hitoshi and his mother who moved to the city. His mother wanted to hand him more opportunities of making friends his age instead of making a father figure out his teacher. Both of them disliked the noises, but Hitoshi is glad they moved to the city in the long run.
High school is where he met Denki. The blond was a loudmouth and most of the time he didn't filter what he said. He was a social butterfly, while Hitoshi was anything but a social butterfly, and that seemed to draw Denki in to force his way into Hitoshi's life. And at some point, his heart.
So yes, Hitoshi got married to his high school sweetheart. Call him cheesy, he honestly could care less.
At the moment, Hitoshi has been working on a murder mystery book. Denki thought it would be for Halloween, but Hitoshi hasn't even gotten to the halfway point yet. Hitoshi worked at home; he had no reason to leave unless for reasons like doing the weekly grocery shopping.
Hitoshi's career gave the two money, but not enough money to give them the nice (Ish) apartment they have. Denki didn't mind being the one to support more. He encouraged it and pushed Hitoshi to publish his first ever book, which was about a man who found a portal to escape his tiring reality. Denki was the first to read it of course.
Denki worked as a waiter. He liked his job at the fancier restaurant, but the people who came were rather rude and made Denki extremely exhausted, physically and mentally. He worked from 4:00pm to 10:00pm. He always came back home complaining, but whenever Hitoshi suggested the idea of getting an easier a job and he could get a proper job himself, Denki always shook his head.
That was another thing. Hitoshi brought that up rather often. Especially when having writers block. But Denki always told him, "You can't give up now. I've seen you work your ass off. Don't just throw away your dream now!" Hitoshi can recall it like it was yesterday.
And all of that leaves them to where they are now.
It was near the end of October, just a night before Halloween. Their small apartment was somewhat decorated for Halloween. Two jack-o-lanterns lit up for the night. It was a rather calming night as Hitoshi typed away at his laptop on the couch, a newly brewed cup of coffee on the small coffee table that was near the couch.
Rain poured from outside and occasional roar of thunder could be heard. It was silent and passed 10:00pm for all that matter. A window was open that revealed the almost black looking sky.
Hitoshi rubbed his eyes, reaching over to grab the mug, sipping at the steaming beverage. His eyebags felt like weights as he had to keep looking at the bright screen in the dark lighting of the living room. The only thing giving off light was a lamp and the jack-o-lanterns, but those were farther away in the kitchen then in the living room.
It shouldn't take long for Denki to arrive home, but the rain may hold him up a bit. It seemed to be pouring from how the rain sounded from outside just a wall. The thunder would be loud or sometimes just a rumble, but it still made itself present.
The restaurant that Denki worked at was only fifteen minutes away, but with the weather and the possibility of traffic, it could take longer. Which it did. Seven minutes longer. Hitoshi would be lying if he said he didn't get a little worried about the slippery roads. He usually did, so it would come to no one's surprise.
When the front door opened, Hitoshi already knew what would come next. Denki took of his shoes, and dragged his feet to the couch, plopping himself next to Hitoshi. He was slightly wet from the rain just outside. Denki gave him a short, but sweet kiss on the lips before cuddling up to Hitoshi, resting his head right below his shoulder.
Hitoshi looked over at his husband fondly, before asking the same question he always did when Denki came home. "How was it?" His voice rasped a bit from not talking for a bit, considering he was alone for seven hours.
Denki grumbled under his breath at the question, which told Hitoshi exactly how it was. Denki didn't have a great day at work, which wasn't a rare sight. "That old wealthy couple was there again." Denki spoke, his voice, tired. He still wore his work uniform. A white button up with black, stiff like, dress pants.
Hitoshi hummed in response, recalling the last few times the wealthy couple came by. From what Hitoshi could tell, they had money, liked to rub it in people's faces and didn't know how to respect people who served them food, and Denki was always stuck with them it seemed.
"Was it that bad?" He asked, placing a kiss on his head. Hitoshi knew the blond had to take a shower and get washed up to go to bed. Hitoshi did it not to long after Denki left, mainly because he wanted to get it over with considering he usually blow dried his hair after words, which tended to take a while.
He felt Denki nod on his arm as he yawned. "I wish all wealthy people were as nice as Yaoyorozu." He mumbled, getting a bit too comfortable. Hitoshi nudged him. "Go get washed up before you fall asleep." Hitoshi told. Denki whined in protest but got up anyway and did so.
Hitoshi watched as Denki, once again, dragged his feet. He was tired, no doubt. Hitoshi couldn't blame him for how tired he was. Just talking to the chatty guy who worked at the cafe felt exhausting. He always talked about a crime show. It wasn't even real crime, it was just a show with actors, but apparently it made the green haired cafe worker hyper focused.
He remembers when he went over there, just yesterday. The cafe has been decorated for Halloween sense September with fake spider webs and skeletons, etc. The green haired cafe worker, known as Midoriya, saw him and instantly waved towards him. He hated when he did that, it caused attention to him.
Midoriya claimed him as a friend, though Hitoshi just saw him as an acquaintance. All Hitoshi asked for was a simple coffee and a hot chocolate for Denki and yet he was there for a good while. Apparently, the crime show was so great because the acter, Toshinori Yagi, was the "Best acter in Japan!"
Hitoshi thought of the possibility of going tomorrow on Halloween. He could take Denki there again. They went there before, multiple times actually. Denki was rather excited when seeing the decorations, they had last Christmas when he first went there. The place opened last November, so it would still be considered a newer place, he supposes.
The sound of lighting broke Hitoshi out of his thought process. The power turning off, though it turned back on in a few seconds. It was times like these when Hitoshi wished they weren't in this apartment building.
It didn't take long after for Denki to come out of the bathroom. His hair was barley brushed, and barley dry at that. It still dripped on the floor, making it wet, but Hitoshi didn't say a word about it.
Denki didn't even look his way when he headed to the bedroom, rubbing his tired eyes. Hitoshi took that as the sign to finish up and get ready to meet Denki in their shard room. Denki always forced his eyes to stay open until Hitoshi came to lay next to him.
Saving his work, Hitoshi turned his laptop off and put his mug in the sink, not wanting to wash it at that given time. He blew the candles from their jack-o-lanterns and made his way to the bedroom where him and his husband could cuddle away while a Halloween movie plays. That's been their routine sense October hit, and most of the time when Denki had to go into work, he fell asleep rather quickly.
There was a knock at the door.
It made Hitoshi mentally sigh. He was inches from their bedroom, and yet he was interrupted. He let a sigh slip when he turned on his heel and made his way to the front door where the knocking wouldn't stop.
His footsteps were quiet when making his way to the door. He hoped Denki would go to sleep at this point. He looked dead tired, and he didn't want him to wait too long all because some idiot wouldn't stop the knocking. The rhythm didn't change, it was just the same noise over and over again.
It was getting on Hitoshi's nerves.
With a turn of a handle, Hitoshi opened the door and their neighbor, Ms. Minori, stood at the door. "What." It was no question, but a demand from Hitoshi. The woman eyed him for a moment, her dark, crimson hair was tied in a loose ponytail. The woman was in her early thirties, and sense Hitoshi and Denki moved in, she decided to get into baking.
Long story short, she wasn't very good at it. But why was she knocking on the door when it was 11:0 something was the main question that Hitoshi never asked. "Well, I made some festive Halloween cookies, and I heard your husband come home not too long ago!" She said with forcible large smile upon her face.
She held the plate out for Hitoshi to take, and unfortunately, he did. "Hope you enjoy them! I'll need that plate back by the way." Ms. Minori said, taking a sharp turn to go back to her own apartment that was right beside theirs.
Hitoshi was getting tired of the city.
Closing the door, making sure he locked it, he went to the kitchen and placed the plate on the countertop near the lit-out jack-o-lanterns. Purple eyes looked at the two pumpkins fondly at the memory of him and Denki carving out the pumpkins.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
Newspaper was all on the living room floor, avoiding any mess that could occur while carving out pumpkins. Denki had few band-aids that decorated his fingers from scooping out the pumpkin's guts. The handle on the sharp edges of the spoon had become dangerously slippery.
Hitoshi was done scooping out the slimy guts of his pumpkin, and he wasn't sure on what to carve on the blank canvas of the orange pumpkin. So, he decided to it was a fine time to stare at his husband with fond, loving eyes. The blond struggled to separate the goop and the pumpkin seeps, even if said seeds would just get forgotten about in a few days. Though, his dedication was something Hitoshi seemed to admire.
"What?" Denki asked with a smile placed on his face, tilting his head just slightly. "Nothing." Was all Hitoshi said, which made the blond's smile drop as he thought for a moment. "Do I have guts on my face or something?" He asked with a small pout. "No." The simple response's made Denki furrow his eyebrows in thought. The blond didn't really like bland answers that didn't tell him the full story.
Though, the sideways smirk that came to Hitoshi's face told Denki Hitoshi knew exactly what he was doing. "You ass." Denki said, flicking the goop from his own pumpkin at Hitoshi, who scrunched up his face at the sudden cold feeling of it came onto his forehead.
He wiped it with his finger in one swoop, but purple eyes glared upon the yellow haired man that sat across from him, but the laugh Denki was trying to hold in, abrupted from his throat, and he couldn't stop the burst of laughter that had now filled the once quiet room.
Hitoshi was lucky his husband was too busy laughing his ass off to see the small smile that came upon his lips.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
The memory had the purple haired man smiling like an idiot as he stared at the two carved pumpkins. It was funny, really, how their relationship started. Hitoshi disliked him before, and here he was, married to the man who he claimed as annoying once before.
Shaking the thought, he made his way toward their bedroom, ready for bed even if he knew he would wake up during the cold night and not be able to sleep for the rest of the night. But that was fine, maybe not to his husband, but then again, he only listened to Denki's rambles on how he should take better care of himself once or twice.
When he came into the room, there laid Denki, eyes closed but not asleep. Hitoshi could tell the difference. He didn't hesitate to go over and slip into bed himself. The bed sheets were cold, but the spot Denki laid on was warm from his own body heat. The purple haired man scooted closer to the blond, who's eyes barley opened from the sound and movement from his husband.
"I don't have work tomorrow." Denki told; his voice laced with sleepiness. Hitoshi always wondered how he was always able to hear the blond. Hitoshi nodded at Denki's words, and even if Denki didn't see it, he knew he heard him. "What do you want to do tomorrow?" Hitoshi asked, brushing some of the blond hair away from Denki's face.
All the blond did was shrug, yet, he had an answer. "Go to the one cafe and then head to the store. We need more candy. Oh, and, uh." Denki lost his thought, but thankfully it came back in just a single minuet. "We should definitely cuddle and watch Halloween movies." Hitoshi chuckled at that, considering that's what they've been doing at night, though he nods again.
"How about we don't give trick or treaters candy this time." Hitoshi suggested, but he already knew the answer was a "No, we have to, their counting on us." From his husband, and he was correct it seemed.
Trick or treaters weren't Hitoshi's favorite part of Halloween, probably the least. Some group of kids always tried to play some stupid trick, and there was probably going to be even more trick or treaters this year sense the rain made the streets wet. Great.
Hitoshi sighed, which was Denki's cue to go over and snuggle up to his husband, giving up his perfectly warm spot to lay with him instead. It was calming, safe, and Hitoshi never wanted this moment to end. Each day he fell more and more in love with the man who laid beside him. It was bound to happen every sense he made up his mind on not wanting or needing friends. He was so foolish, and childish for such thoughts he tried to make himself believe.
Hitoshi wasn't sure when, but Denki fell asleep. He was mumbling tiredly seconds ago, none of it was heard though. Hitoshi grabbed the other's hand, rubbing a thumb over his knuckles, feeling the ring that showed they were a married couple. A happy one at that.
Of course, everything has its ups and downs, like their relationship. Maybe it happened often back then, he doesn't fully remember, but they were teenagers, teenagers dealing with puberty at that. Both of them are surprised at how long their relationship had held on, but both of them wouldn't have any other way.
Hitoshi's own thoughts turned into background noise, his own mind slipping in the trance of sleep. He was tired. His eyes were relieved once closed and everything was at ease, two men, asleep.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
When Denki woke up, the spot where Hitoshi once slept was empty. He was warm, but he nothing to hold onto which caused a pout as a response to the lonely emptiness of their bed. The blond debated on getting up or not, not realizing he had fallen back asleep while thining about such a hard decision.
The blond only realized he had fallen back asleep when he was shookin awake by his one and only. "Wake up." Hitoshi spoke quietly and soft, Denki didn't want to get up, even if his stomach longed to eat breakfast. "I don't want to." The whine came from Denki, who kept his eyes shut. He heard the chuckle from his husband, and he couldn't help but smile at the sound.
All Hitoshi did was move his hair to kiss his cheek. A small gesture he did ever morning that made Denki have hearts in his eyes as if he were a cartoon character who had found their true love, which wasn't too far off.
"You said you wanted to go to the cafe, unless you changed your mind." Hitoshi stated, and Denki could hear the sly smirk that was on his face, far to smug about his winning point that made Denki have to sit up with a groan of annoyance. But how could he be annoyed at him, honestly.
Hitoshi was already dressed and ready to go. Wearing the black skeleton hoodie Denki told him to wear on Halloween sense Hitoshi refused to dress up in a costume that would be uncomfortable. So, they compromised. Of course, Denki had one of his own, wanting to match to seem like those cheesy couples you see on Tv.
"Hurry up. I don't want to wait for the crowd to show up." Denki heard from behind him once he stood up and stretched his arms up high, his body aching from not moving for some time. "Yeah, yeah." He responded, walking to the closet to grab clothes so he could hurry and get dressed before he had Hitoshi rushing him to get out the door.
It didn't take to long for the blond to start moving faster as time went by, feeling more awake once he washed his face. With his hair done, matching hoodie on, he stood proudly Infront of Hitoshi at how fast he managed to get ready.
But alas, Hitoshi rose an eyebrow, eye glinting amusement that made Denki look at himself, making sure his paints weren't on backwards. It's happened once or twice. "What?" He asked, though he couldn't help the slight demanding tone in his voice. "Do you plan to wear shoes without socks?" And there it was. Damnit.
Denki grumbled who knows what under his breath as he stomped back to their room to go grab some socks so he could wear his shoes comfortably. Hitoshi, on the other hand, was leaning on the wall near the front door, shoes already on.
He fiddled with the ring that rested on his finger. The silver band that he often admired. Being married to Denki of all people was still weird and felt unreal. But their memories were no dream. Thank god. "Boom! Socks!" His thoughts were interrupted by Denki, who rose his leg up to show off his jack-o-lantern socks that were far to notable.
Denki was quick to put his shoes on, ready to go eat breakfast, complaining about how hungry he was, his stomach grumbling as he said so as they made their way out of the apartment building with ease and memory.
Denki, of course, held Hitoshi's hand, swinging their arms once they went outside. Few people were outside in the morning, it being a holiday also, people took the day off so they could spend the whole day, watching movies, spending time with family, or making sure their costume was just right for the holiday that came once a year.
The sun was up, shining bright in the morning for everyone to see it. Cars drove past, stopping at stop signs and traffic lights. Few shops started opening for the day. The few people who walked on the sidewalk wore a Halloween shirt or accessories, while others just wore a nice fall outfit to take a nice walk or head to work.
The few trees that were around always reminded Hitoshi of where he used to live. It made him miss it. Halloweens back then were far more better in his opinion, but he tolerated the one in the city and more known towns considering Denki was with him.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
"Hey." The more popular blond, Denki Kaminari spoke over to him, giving him a small wave with a giant smile plastered on his face. Hitoshi was just minding his own business, eating lunch outside in the autumn weather while small gusts of cold wind blew through.
Hitoshi didn't know why the other bothered to go over to him when he had friends that were just as popular as him, people who matched his energy. Except for the far more angrier blond he hung around, that guy didn't match his energy to much compared to the other four. Hitoshi, on the other hand, was the complete opposite of Kaminari.
"What do you want?" He sounded defensive, which, for Kaminari, it seemed to be normal the more he talked to him. "Oh you know, just chillin, seeing what my best bud is doing." Kaminari was annoying with that. Always claiming Hitoshi as his friend. Kaminari would never end up as his friend, he was too loud and always quick. Something Hitoshi was not.
Hitoshi knew better than to try and tell the idiotic blond otherwise though. Kaminari never knew when to quit, and that would get him in trouble one day if he kept that up.
"Hey, wanna go with my friends on Halloween? It'll be super fun! I'm gunna go as a-" The blond rambled to fast, making Hitoshi interrupt him so he could stop talking. "No. I'm not going anywhere with anybody on Halloween." Hitoshi said, venom in his tone, glaring at the other who's smile barley faltered.
"Well, if you change your mind. We're going to go trick or treating in my neighborhood at 7pm." He told, turning on his heel to go back inside where Hitoshi assumed his other friends were. And sadly, Hitoshi knew where Denki lived, considering the blond gave him a piece of paper of his address. An invitation to hang out.
But as Hitoshi did with a lot of the blond's invitations.
He never came.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
"Welcome again! I see you brought your husband." Midoriya greeted the two with a cheerful smile on his face. Midoriya wore a police outfit, the name tag reading 'all might', showing that he was being his favorite character from the crime show he seemed to get into.
"Sup." Denki said, looking around at the decorations that made the cafe look sparkly with all of the decorations that had glitter all over. Hitoshi just simply nodded to show he heard the other man who stood in front of them, waiting to take their order.
Denki took an interest at looking at the display of different baked goods that would be appropriate for breakfast. He didn't need a cookie for breakfast. Hitoshi looked at the small menu stand that had all of the pastries they had to offer for their costumers. Sadly, all of the names on the menu were switched, giving some stupid names that went with the Halloween theme. Denki seemed to take a liking to them though.
"We'll take a dark coffee and a hot chocolate." Hitoshi told, Midoriya writing it on a small notepad. Denki was far too interested in the stupid little names some of the sweet treats were given, that it took him a moment to realize Hitoshi motioning him to pick something to eat for breakfast.
"Hmmm." Denki hummed, tapping a finger on his chin just to show how hard he was thinking. Midoriya took this time to restock some of their popular cheesecake. "I want the demon eyed muffin." Denki said with a grin while Hitoshi gave him a look at his childish behaver. But Denki knew he loved it.
Midoriya apparently kept an ear out, writing what the blond had originally just told his husband onto the small paper. He was good, friendly worker, Hitoshi will give him that. "Make that two." Hitoshi decided, taking his wallet out of his back pocket to get card, swiping it to pay the price it showed.
The green haired worker nodded before calling out to another worker. "Iida, can you take inventory!" He yelled, not even looking behind him as he grabbed two paper cups for the two who stood waiting for their order to get done.
"Already on it!" Called out someone in the back, who speed walked past to check how many coffee beans they had to see if they needed some from the back. Though the guy had on his own costume, a character from a kids show perhaps.
The cafe smelled good. It smelled of coffee and pastries. The two scents mixing together which made it feel comforting. It made him think of his old teacher. Back when his and his mother lived much farther from the city and in a smaller town. His teacher was a comfort to him, though they rarely talked on the phone. But when they did, it was nice.
"Alright! Here's your dark portal and mud city with two demon eyed muffins!" Midoriya spoke, though it sounded like he had rehearsed the names once before. No one would be surprised if the man did so, considering the names were nothing like the ones they made for Halloween.
Denki hesitate to grab what was his and taking a bite of his muffin, bowing as a thanks while Hitoshi, again, just nodded with a small wave, holding the two things that he would be having in the nice morning of Halloween.
Denki and Hitoshi decided to start heading back to their apartment, Denki starting small talk even if his mouth was full of the larger muffin they were given for their breakfast out for the occasion of the holiday they both found enjoyable.
Denki was a chatter box, going on and on about his work and saying how their was "The nicest couple you could ever meet!" He occasionally took sips of his hot chocolate that still steamed, and Hitoshi wasn't sure how he didn't flinch at the burning on his tongue he knew the blond would mention later during the day.
They took the long way home, the walk was relaxing and put their minds at ease. Hitoshi wanted to take the specific route because he knew his husband liked looking at the decorations, pointing them out as if they weren't obvious in the shop's windows or near a school, which made Denki start talking about his time in the exact same school building when he was six.
Denki was talking up a storm the whole way home. The blond got into certain things he talked about, moving his hands and arms while doing so. The sight was cute, and showed Hitoshi that the blond didn't change much sense he first met him.
The blond's rambles died down once they made it to their floor of their apartment building. Some people had their jack-o-lanterns just beside their door, while other's had a Halloween themed reef like they did.
"Hey neighbors." Ms. Minori spoke. Luckily, she did not have anything in her hands besides a small stack of papers Hitoshi eyed in suspicion, while Denki gave her a wave with a smile. "You should definitely come over later. Doing a Halloween party in my apartment." She informed, handing the blond one the papers she carried.
"Oh, and look at you two, already in your cute little matching costumes! People would love you! And don't worry, I have alcohol." She informed the two with a wink that made Hitoshi feel uncomfortable. The woman's smile twitched, showing just how forced it was.
The couple Infront of the woman didn't say a word, Denki probably seeing if Hitoshi would say anything. Hitoshi knew he should though, his husband tended to be a people pleaser, and Hitoshi didn't want to go to a dumb Halloween party with their neighbor who was far too up their business for his liking.
"Sure, we'll come and check it out!" Denki decided to say, smile and all. Hitoshi sighed mentally, yelling at himself for not doing anything to stop or tell his loving husband that it sounded like complete torture.
"Great to hear it! You know where I am!" She told, before heading off, probably to go tell other people about her party she hyped so much. Hitoshi couldn't complain to Denki about it though. He couldn't get himself to be frustrated or annoyed that he had agreed for both of them when Denki looked like a guilty puppy, praying for forgiveness.
The look was rather familiar.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
It's been a year. Sixteen now and Hitoshi still couldn't get the nagging blond away from him no matter how hard he seemed to try to shoo the far to desperate blond. "Hey Shinsou. What are you reading?" Kaminari asked. His eyes held genuine curiosity, though Hitoshi scuffed with an eyeroll.
It made Kaminari look at him with his pleading eyes. He looked like some kind of curious puppy. Wanting to know something. And in this case. He wished to know what the other mysterious teenager was up to.
He knew he would be looked at as rude, but Kaminari should be looked at as not taking the goddamned hint that Hitoshi didn't want nor wish to be his friend no matter how hard he seemed to try. Anyone would have easily taken the answer as no and stop trying to get in his personal space.
The fall weather caused wind to blow passed them with ease, Hitoshi taking notice at Kaminari giving a small shiver. "It's horror poetry." He spoke. He had taken an interest to it once he saw a book of poetry in the school's library, a couple of the pages having horror poetry which peeked his interest.
"I haven't read that myself, is it good?" Kaminari asked with a tilt of his head. He sat next to him, legs crossed and sitting down on the grass with the other. "If I didn't like it, why would I be reading it?" Hitoshi deadpans with a raise of his brow which makes the other laugh, making Hitoshi wonder why.
"You've got a point." Kaminari tells. He stands up, looking down at Hitoshi who didn't realize his own staring. "I got people waiting on me. You should hang some time!" He offers, walking off.
A few days later. Hitoshi can't help to notice the blond holding a book of horror poetry.
† † † † † † † † † † † †
The sound of small children screaming came once a big crash of lighting hit and the lights flickering off. What a shame, they were about to go to the party. "Hitoshi! Where are the flashlights!?" Denki's yell hurt his ears; it was far too quiet in apartment with the power out.
"Look in the kitchen! Bottom drawer to the left!" His own voice hurt his ears with how loud and echoey it seemed to be. Hitoshi was searching in their bedroom. They had to have flashlights, right? Yes, they had their phones, but they'd rather not use up their battery. "There are no flashlights! But I found candles!" Well, it was something.
The two went back to the living room. It felt colder, though, Hitoshi couldn't get himself to really mind it. Denki got few candles lit on the coffee table, sitting on the floor near the couch. Why? Hitoshi never asks but joins by sitting right next to him. "Well, we don't have to go to the party. I'd say this is a good enough excuse, don't you think?" Hitoshi told with a smirk that was barely visible.
"That just makes me think you set it up." Denki said with a laugh. His golden hair fit the small light the candle gave. Hitoshi swears his smile is glowing at this rate. "So, best Halloween?" Denki asked, pulling a small bag with a mix of different chocolates and candys the two could enjoy.
Hitoshi lets a laugh escape his throat. The silence that overtook the room sounded like static, but with Denki's small talk, it became comfortable and less hurtful to the purple haired man's ears. You could hear people walking around, their whispers and such while they walked right passed their door.
"So, where's your Christmas list?" Denki asks. The next holiday was just another thing they could stress about, just for the day to pass by like it were never even a thing. "You know I'll end up not making one." Hitoshi told at Denki's knowing sideways smile. Hitoshi put an arm around his husband, making them close.
"Well then don't complain when I give you some stupid cat gift." Denki say's, fake annoying in his voice. Last Christmas, Denki got him a cat toaster. It's been Denki's thing sense Hitoshi let the other become his friend sense he was allergic to cats. It was something sweet, something that Hitoshi loved.
"Maybe I wouldn't have complained if the toaster didn't burn the bread to a crisp." The fact was true, though Denki refused to listen to what he called his lie's, even if they both knew Hitoshi spoke the truth. Their tastebuds would know.
The blond grabbed an orange and black, flannel blanket that was once the couch, down on the floor with them. He put it around them, even if they still wore their hoodies that gave them enough warmth. Rain poured heavy, but the sound was comforting and made the two think of the night before.
. . . .
It was a dark and stormy night. Two men, three candles, candy, and a blanket. It was Halloween night, no trick or treaters in sight once the clock struck midnight. Thunder occasionally made it's roaring sound present, and at some point, the candles went out while the power flickered back on.
Noises from just outside the front door had calmed, and if someone knocked upon their door, they wouldn't know.
