Trick ‘r Treat

Summary:

Dean and Cas are having an All Saints Day marathon when they get an unexpected visitor.

Notes:

Suptober23 Prompt was Trick or Treat

I love the movie Trick ‘r Treat and I love the idea that Cas knows about all of these creatures that Dean thinks are pretend. This is sort of the companion piece to last year’s Don’t Fuck with Corn which you can read here

Thank you for reading.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Dean tosses popcorn in his mouth as he watches All Saints Day 4: Hatchet Man Lives . He knows it’s cheesy and campy but he loves it. He tries to watch it every October. Sam is out with Eileen at the library or something. Cas ran out to get more beer and candy since Dean is way too drunk to get behind Baby’s wheel.

He finds the predictability soothing. It’s not like his life at all. He can look at these characters' clothes and know in an instant who is going to die and who’s the hero. Occasionally he wishes that his real life was that simple. Although he could do with all the gore staying in the movies. He’s gettin’ to fuckin’ old to dig up graves.

Dean hears a knock on the door to the Dean cave. “Just come in Cas,” Dean yells behind him. “I’m all comfy.”

There is another knock.

Rolling his eyes Dean climbs out of his blanket and brings his near empty bowl of candy with him. “Cas, you could just open the-“

Dean sees a small child wearing a burlap sack with two black buttons for eyes and a stitched mouth. They are wearing orange footie pajamas and they have a jack-o-lantern lollipop with a chunk taken out of it. They holds out a sac to Dean.

“Um, what are you doing here kid?” Dean asks. “How did you get in here?”

The child shakes their sac at Dean. They gesture towards the bowl of candy and grunt. “No, seriously, are you lost? Do you need help? How did you get in here without setting off a bunch of alarms?”

Dean groans a little as he crotches down to be eye level with the kid. He reaches out and hesitates for a moment. “You got a name?”

The child looks at their bag and then turns it until Dean can see the letters S A M stitched into the fabric.

“Sam’s a good name,” Dean says. “That’s my brother’s name. So are you okay Sam?”

The small child nods his masked head and gestures again towards Dean’s bowl of candy.

“You want candy?” Dean reaches in, grabbing as much as he can with one hand and dumps it into the kid’s bag. “Hang on, I got more.” He grabs another handful and dumps it in. He looks down to see he has one piece of candy left. “I got one more. I’ll give it to you if you let me take you home or to the police station or something? We are in the middle of nowhere.”

Dean knows there has to be something wrong with this kid. No way this kid just wandered in here. “Can we take your mask off?” Dean reaches towards the kid, his fingers barely brush the fabric when the kid screeches and pushes Dean with preternatural strength. Dean goes flying across the room, landing in a heap on the floor. The candy bar lands halfway between Dean and the child. Dean struggles to his feet, he storms towards the pumpkin kid, picking up the candy bar on his way. He’s about to pull his gun when Cas is suddenly there. He grabs that candy bar out of Dean’s hand and offers it to the child.

“We are deeply sorry Samhain,” Castiel’s head bowed in reverence. “Please accept this offering.” Samhain’s chubby hand reaches out to grab the candy. “And this pie!” Castiel quickly holds out the pie to the child who takes it with a happy screech. He drops the pie in his bag and then waves at Cas and Dean and turns to walk away.

“What the fuck was that Cas?” Dean asks. “And why did you give it my pie?”

“If you ever see him again, give him candy or sweets. Believe me, there are some things in this world that even you are not prepared to confront.” Castiel cracks open a bottle of the newly purchased beer and sits on the couch. “Now, what did I miss in the movie?”
