Work Text:
Ichiban awakes in the night when someone shakes his shoulder, his tired eyes snapping open. He finds Saeko kneeling beside him, also dishevelled and sleepy, but the sheer panic on her face makes Ichiban sit up straight.
“What’s going on?” he mumbles, trying to blink the sleep from his eyes.
“Nanba thinks Adachi-san’s having a heart attack,” Saeko says, and the world seems to turn upside down. Before Ichiban can reply, a voice comes out of Saeko’s smartphone, and she raises it to her ear. “Hello? I need an ambulance. My partner is…”
As she rattles off Adachi’s name and symptoms to the person on the other end of the line, Ichiban turns his head. He finds Adachi sitting on the other side of the room with his back against the wall, his legs bent with a large cushion tucked under his knees. His clammy face contorts in agony, his eyes screwed shut.
Ichiban races across the room, soon able to hear Adachi’s ragged, laboured breaths. He also hears Nanba’s voice as his partner whispers reassuring words to Adachi, gently rubbing Adachi’s shoulder.
“…just take deep breaths for me,” Nanba says, “and try to stay calm. Sacchan is calling an ambulance. They’ll be here soon.”
“Adachi-san!” Ichiban says, falling to his knees and crawling to Adachi’s side.
“Kasuga…” Adachi mumbles, opening his eyes. “M-My chest. Feels like I’ve been shot…”
“Don’t try to talk,” Nanba says, placing his fingers against Adachi’s neck, feeling for a pulse. “Just breathe, okay.”
Ichiban bites his lip, not sure what to say. He has never seen anyone have a heart attack before, and he has no clue how to help. In desperation, Ichiban takes Adachi’s sweaty, shaky hand in his own and squeezes. He hates feeling so fucking helpless.
“…Th-Thank you so much!” Saeko says as she ends the phone call. She lets out a shuddery sigh, rushing to join the others. “They’ll be here in fifteen minutes. You hanging in there, old man?” she says, her tone fond.
Adachi manages to chuckle, a weak smile flashing across his face. Ichiban squeezes his hand tighter, hoping the ambulance will get here swiftly.
Only a few minutes later, Adachi starts to slump to the side, his eyelids drooping. And despite Nanba begging him to stay awake, and Ichiban shaking him, Adachi doesn’t manage to stay conscious.
As he helps Adachi to lie on the floor, Ichiban finds his teeth chattering. But it isn’t cold in their room. He must be shivering out of stress.
Nanba shoos him and Saeko out of the way, so they jump backwards to allow him to kneel at Adachi’s side. He takes Adachi’s pulse again, and then he mutters, “Fuck…”
Before Saeko can ask him what happened, Nanba tilts Adachi’s head back and presses his lips to Adachi’s mouth. And as he blows into Adachi’s mouth, followed by pressing down hard and fast against his chest, performing CPR on their partner, Ichiban reaches for Saeko’s hand, giving a gentle squeeze.
