Summary
Shuichi lets the silence sit, watching the contemplative look on Maki’s face, and so he sees the moment it crumbles into pure anger.
“I think they were teasing me,” she spits. “‘You can see your friend if you’re obedient.’ That’s what they’re telling us. ‘Be obedient.’”
“And if we’re not?”
The sound of clicking shoes on linoleum draws two pairs of eyes to the door of the small room as the same two nurses walk by again. They are not talking this time, but staring. Their faces twist up into a smile as they see the two patients looking at them, but neither patient reacts. Their steps, considerably slower, are the only sound heard between all four of them.
Maki waits until they are out of sight before she whispers, “Disobedient children are punished. We just need to know what their definition of punishment is.” She meets Shuichi’s eyes. “Whether it’s isolation as these levels suggest, or they follow Monokuma’s ideals.”
“And if that’s the case…”
“We won’t know when they disappear,” Shuichi finishes grimly.
“Because they’re already isolating us from each other.”
