Work Text:
the rain was pouring down on the train that was taking katsuki from UA back to his parents house. the dreary weather and dark clouds perfectly matched his demeanor and the circles under his eyes. his headphones were on, yet he couldn’t pick a song. he usually picks music that matches his mood, but he couldn’t think of a song about facing the possibility of losing the person he is closest to, the one he is in love with. he’s never been good with feelings, but something about todoroki shouto just made everything make sense. the other made his heart hurt, but in a good way that became familiar. like when shouto would smile, or laugh. whenever shouto’s eyes would light up after he made katsuki laugh, not finding himself funny, but katsuki did. or the familiar feeling of his heart aching whenever they were apart for a day or longer. he never told anyone for fear of being told he’s too attached, too dependent on the other. it’s just that he needs to be with shouto to protect him, to make sure no one can hurt him anymore. that and for selfish reasons as well. the biggest take away is that he needs shouto in his life, and the possibility of going separate ways is terrifying.
katsuki pulls his jacket over his head as he runs to his parent’s house. he hates the rain, hates how it makes his clothes suffocate him. one time when he got stuck in the rain with shouto, shouto told him that he likes when it rains because katsuki’s clothes stick to him and show off his body. katsuki told him to shut up, but he secretly thinks of it often.
he aggressively opened the door to the house, kicking off his shoes and hanging up his coat. his mother and father greeted him, both with soft smiles, something that was usual for his father, but not so much for his mother. he looked up at them, slightly grimacing at their faces, but not really in the mood to snap at them.
“come sit down, i made us some tea.” his mother then goes to grab the tray with tea and some of katsuki’s favorite sweets on it. his father pats his back lightly and they all go to sit on the couch.
“do you want to tell us what’s going on? i thought things were good between you two.” his father says calmly. katsuki told them he needed to come home because of his relationship, but couldn’t talk about it over the phone.
“they are, it’s just…” he started messing with his hands, a habit he picked up when he was younger. tapping them on things, or fidgeting with them. “it’s just that we are almost done with our third year. i don’t know where he is going to go after this, or what place he wants to be working in. i keep meaning to ask him, but i’m terrified that it won’t be near me, or that he doesn’t even want to stay together after.” he took a deep, shaky breath. his eyes started to swell with emotions, with the fear of losing shouto, his shouto. “mom, dad, i can’t lose him. i wouldn’t know what to do with myself. i can never find another like him. there is no one else for me.”
both of his parents are on either side of him, and they each grab his hand.
“oh, katsuki, it will be okay, i’m sure of it. you just have to communicate with him. you’ve been together for a while, and he seems so in love with you. if you express your emotions and fears, it will all work out. he could be feeling the same as you do.”
katsuki nodded. he stayed with his parent’s for some time and then left before it got too dark outside. as he made it on the train, his phone buzzed.
**shou**
hello. where are you?
**katsuki**
i was at my parent’s. coming back now
alright if i go to your room?
**shou**
of course.
he spent the whole train ride back thinking of what to say to shouto. it was hard to get his thoughts together, but his parents helped him. his hands started to shake the closer he got to UA until he was standing outside shouto’s door. he took a deep breath before knocking. it opened quickly, like shouto was standing by the door waiting for him.
“were you waiting by the door?” shouto nodded as he pulled katsuki inside and wrapped his arms around him, pushing their cheeks together. something that katsuki picked up on in the very beginning is that shouto doesn’t only love being touched, but he loves skin on skin. he’s always having katsuki take his shirt off even if he didn’t mean it in a sexual way.
“what are you? a damn dog?”
“just want you here.”
katsuki put his hands on shouto’s shoulders and pushed him away gently. “i gotta talk to you about something.”
the look on shouto’s face made katuski’s heart hurt. the worry in his two toned eyes were enough to make katsuki cry.
“is everything okay? did i do something wrong?”
“it’s not bad, don’t worry. you didn’t do anything wrong. here come sit down with me.”
they make their way over to shouto’s futon, sitting side by side with their legs touching. shouto still looked visibly nervous and katsuki could tell. he got good at reading shouto before they were even dating.
“uh, so i went to my parent’s house today because i had to talk to them about you. it was all good things, it’s just…” katsuki grabbed shouto’s hand and tried to compose himself, “i had to talk to them about the future. i don’t know what you want to do or where you want to go because i was too scared to ask, and too selfish too. i just want you with me. nothing could ever be the same if i lost you. the world would have a dark hue to it and i would feel lost. my accomplishments mean near nothing without you there to celebrate with me. you’re the one i love, you’re the only one i can’t lose. you mean everything to me.”
shouto looked up at katsuki, his face much calmer than before. “that’s what you’re worried about? there’s no reason to worry, katsuki. i want to go where you go. i want to always be this close. it doesn’t matter to me where we live because my home is where you are. i’m glad you told me. we can find a place together and stay together. i was worried you want to be away from me.”
“don’t be stupid. i would never want that. even though you’re a pain in the ass, i always want to be with you.” katsuki leaned over and opened his nightstand drawer. he pulled out a small cloth bag that he hid under books and other objects he kept in there. he then turned to fully face shouto. “it’s not much, but i didn’t think you would want something flashy. it’s also not a real proposal, but i wanted to give you a token of my love. i didn’t know when would be a good time to give you this, but i think now is.” he opened the cloth bag, and pulled out a gold band with a singular diamond placed in the middle. he showed it to shouto, who looked at it with a soft smile and a dusting of pink on his cheeks and nose.
“are you sure?”
“of course i am. don’t be stupid. give me your hand.” shouto gave katsuki his hand, and then katsuki delicately placed the ring on his finger. shouto didn’t even let katsuki pull his hand away from shouto’s before he threw himself on him in a hug. he kissed katsuki’s cheek until the skin was wet.
katsuki laughed at the affection, a similar rose color on his face. he moved them both back so they were laying down on the bed, basking in each other’s love and affection, before pulling out his phone. “i’ve been looking at some places in tokyo. they’re like a mix of our styles. we can go check them out sometime soon.”
“okay.” shouto’s voice was small and cute. when katsuki looked over he noticed wet tears rolling down the other’s cheeks. he didn’t have to ask why he was crying, he knew it was due to the affection and likely due to overcoming the fear of losing katsuki, something that was on shouto’s mind a lot. katsuki kissed shouto’s lips and held him closely. they stayed like that for the rest of the night, happily in each other’s arms without having to worry about the future.
bonus:
“it’s called a ‘promise ring.’” shouto told all the girls who surrounded him in the cafeteria. they all cooed at shouto, and some left the crowd after seeing that he was obviously taken, but the girls from his class who were present were all very much happy for him.
kaminari who was also near by yelled out, “you’re engaged?!”
“shut the fuck up!”
