rain sealed their fate

Summary:

Brienne and Jaime end up seated on a plane together.

This is the aftermath. Will they miss their chance together or will fate have a way of bringing them back together?

Work Text:

“No. Not interested,” Brienne said. She definitely was not interested in receiving a lift from someone she barely knew.

“Alright. If you say so. It was…nice…getting to know you on the flight,” Jaime replied, hesitating before he turned and walked away from her.

Brienne hesitated too, if she’d been more confident she’d have asked for his number. Or taken him up on his offer instead of having to hail a cab. Or said something or just done anything other than stand there in the middle of the airport walkway like a dummy.

While walking away, Jaime turned back several times hoping she’d change her mind. It wasn’t every day a person judged him on their own terms and not based on what they’d heard. Brienne had been a breath of fresh air. Before he rounded the corner that would take him out of sight forever, he looked over his shoulder once and saw her not following him so he carried on his way to his car.

Maybe she should go after him? It would grate on her forever if she didn’t at least try. Brienne then took several steps in the direction Jaime had gone, looking for him, hoping that she’d catch up to him.

Then she was lost. He was not in sight. Oh Gods. She couldn’t breathe. A panic attack was going to come over her.

“Excuse me, miss?” a short young lad asked her. The name tag said he was called Pod. “What might you be looking for?”

“A car,” Brienne could barely get out.

“I can show you to the parking lot. But you’re on your own for remembering where you parked-” Brienne thought to herself that finding the parking lot was exactly what she needed. It was where Jaime would be. She needed to get there before he drove on out of there.

“Great. Let’s go. We need to hurry. We have to hurry, Pod.”

“...Okay,” Pod said, snapping into gear, leading Brienne back the way she’d come.

Soon enough, they were speed walking, Pod’s legs having to work to keep up with Brienne’s.

And then they were standing in the entrance to the car park, Brienne began traversing the area, hoping against hope that he was still there. She was becoming more and more agitated that she’d lost her chance.

“What sort of car are we looking for Miss?”

“Something flashy. Gold.”

“I’ve not seen any gold cars.”

“Red then.”

“You don’t know what colour car you have?” Pod asked her incredulously.

“It’s not mine. It’s Jaime’s,” Brienne said, exasperatedly. Her hands threaded through her hair as she was just shy of running between car parking bays.

An odd look crossed Pod’s face and then he asked Brienne, “Are you talking about Jaime Lannister?”

“Yes,” Brienne spoke, placing her hands on Pod’s shoulders. “Do you know him? Do you know where his car is?”

Pod’s eyes widened at Brienne’s oddly outrageous behaviour. “I don’t know where his car is. But it’s a black SUV. It’s not flashy at all.”

It was then that Brienne crumpled to the ground. There were hundreds of SUVs. And even more cars that were black.

Pod knelt to her level, “What’s wrong? Do you need me to call anyone? I can call him for you.”

“You can. Please.”

A number was punched into a phone. One number and then it was handed to Brienne and then she did not know what to do when his voice came over the line, “Pod. I’m going to be a few moments late. I’m waiting for a woman.”

All she did was hand the phone back to Pod. She didn’t even bother to say anything. It was clear that he had someone else. Brienne weakly said her thanks to Pod, before starting the walk back to the terminal. She should’ve just gotten into the taxi.

“Hey. What’s your name?” Pod shouted from behind her.

“Brienne.”

And then she kept on walking.

“This is just my luck,” Brienne said to herself when the first drop of rain hit her. Then another and another and another. She wasn’t even wearing a coat. She didn’t even bring a coat. Tarth was warm. And it hardly ever rained. When it did rain, it was a fine mist.

This was drenching. Her pantsuit was not suited to the rain and she could already feel her shirt start to cling to her form.

Damnit.

The sound of a car's engine behind her had her stepping into a car parking space to wait for it to go by.

But it didn’t. It didn’t go by. It stopped, effectively blocking her into the space, annoying her. She was going to have words with the driver.

Just because a person owned a SUV did not give them the right to stop and honk at her.

Any words she had died on her lips as the window rolled down to reveal Jaime, “Get in.”

“But you were waiting for someone.” Brienne said, unsure of herself. “You were going to get a floozy for your arm.”

Jaime got out of the car and walked up to her, hugging her close, and Brienne was surprised when his lips met hers. She squeaked into his mouth and then his tongue met her briefly, her hands found his hair, which was already damp, rivulets of water transferred from it and down her arms, down the inside of the sleeves of her jacket. His hands fiddled with the hem of the back of her shirt before he pulled away so that he was at arms length.

“Forgive me. If I didn’t do that I might’ve regretted it for the rest of my life. And for the record I don’t think you’re a floozy. I was waiting in the taxi rank for you.”

Brienne lightly smacked him in the chest, “Why didn’t you say so?”
“He tried to. He told me on the phone but you’d already gone. Can’t you both get in the car before you catch a cold,” Pod said, having rolled the back window down the tiniest of fractions before he rolled it up again.

“He’s right. You might catch a cold-” Jaime said, leading her towards the car.

“So might you,” Brienne shot back.

As Jaime opened the passenger side door for her, he whispered in her ear, “I’m the one who is wearing a coat.”

Brienne blushed as she got in. But was nonetheless grateful to be sitting in the dry.

Almost as soon as Jaime got into the car he turned the heating up to max and reaching into the back of the car, Pod wordlessly handed him an item which he then in turn handed to her.

“Put it on. It won’t bite you,” Jaime said as Brienne just stared down at the item in her hand. A Lannister american football jacket. One with Jaime’s number on it.

“I couldn’t possibly-”

“Don’t be a fool. We’ve already been fools once today. Please just put it on.”

Brienne did so and as she did she subtly sniffed the pleasant aroma that wafted from it. The scent of him.

She looked up from the jacket and smiled at Jaime who was smiling back at her, Pod was smiling but only because the rain had let up. All the while he was wondering if the rain was only there for them to have their famous kiss in the rain scene like they were the leads in a romantic comedy movie.

Pod was convinced the weather for them and only them as the clouds evaporated and the sun ended up shining for the rest of the day.
