Cold Way Home

Summary:

Wilson, a depressed office worker, decides he's had enough of everything and attempts suicide.

Unfortunately for him, a pair of heroes aren't so eager for that to happen.

'Why did you stop me?' Wilson groaned, sitting up slowly.

'Why wouldn't I? More importantly, why the FUCK would you jump in the first place?'

Chapter Text

Yu Q. Wilson, a depressed office worker, makes his way towards the office's coffee machine for the 5th time. He proceeds with his usual routine, expression blank. With his coffee, he sits back down at his desk and stares. He stares at his coworkers, conversing about their marriages and children. He stares at his screen, an empty word document. He stares at his coffee, too hot to drink. He was so tired, the bags under his eyes were so prominent that not even the best concealer could help him. Overworked, overwhelmed and underpaid.

He opened his desk drawer and found his pills, he took a handful too many and shoved them in his mouth. A sudden surge of energy brought him to his feet, he downed the steaming hot cup of coffee, swallowing the pills, and felt his mouth burn. Oh well.

His coworkers directed their attention towards him. 'You alright?' One of them asked, sharing a glance with their friend.

'I'm heading out. Goodnight.'

They watched him leave with a determined stride. None of them had really talked to him before, he was younger and didn't look especially approachable.

Someone commented, 'Must've woken up on the wrong side of the bed.' and the group laughed.

They were mocking him. They must all think he's a loser, a nobody, someone they can make fun of.

His feet led him up the stairs, to the roof of the building. With each step he could feel a fragment of himself slipping away. His fear and sadness dissipated, it would all be over soon. He reached the top and pushed open the unexpectedly heavy door, reaching the desolate roof. It was raining, which felt fitting. He took his shoes off, the polished material displaying his reflection. An exhausted looking man looked back at him, he grimaced, he couldn't even recognise himself.

Slowly, Wilson walked up to the edge of the building. Repeating a mantra of 'It's okay, it'll be over soon.'  He reminded himself that no one would miss him, no one would care. His workplace could easily replace him with a more sociable, positive and hard-working person. This would be better for everyone.

He reached the edge. The rain drenched him but he didn't feel cold at all. How should he do it? A leap of faith? Should he fall backwards? Whatever, as long as it did the job.

A cautious step forward turned into a leap, adrenaline rushing through his blood.

Wilson closed his eyes.

A hand grabbed his wrist, pulling him up and onto the roof with surprising force.

Furious, he opened his eyes and was met with a huge man with an extremely worried expression.

Before Wilson could question him, he yelled, 'ARE YOU OKAY!?'

Wilson winced at his volume, causing the buff man to quickly apologise.

'Why did you stop me?' Wilson groaned, sitting up slowly.

'Why wouldn't I? More importantly, why the FUCK would you jump in the first place?'

Wilson scrunches up his face, 'I have.. my reasons..' His energy was completely drained, his eyes began to close.

The man noticed his unusual fatigue, 'Bro what the hell, did you take something?'

'Maybe.. some pills..'

'Oh god, just stay with me, okay?' The man picked him up bridal style, 'I'll get you fixed up, just..don't die.'

'S..ure..'

Zali sat on the sofa, he had a quiz show on the TV but he wasn't really paying attention to it. Vanta had been on patrol for way longer than usual, he'd only just gotten started with hero work so he typically patrolled for 2-4 hours but it'd already been 6. He stared down at his phone, hoping for any calls or notifications. Instead, he was met with a loud banging on the door.

He ran over to answer the knocking, opening it to see a distressed looking Vantacrow holding a frail looking blonde man.

'Help. Please.' Vanta pleaded.

Zali took the blonde from the man and placed him down in the guest bedroom.

'What's wrong with him?'

'H-He said he took some pills or something and when I found him he was trying to jump off a BUILDING!' Vanta made frantic arm gestures, his panic was apparent.

'Leave it to me, go rest.'

Wilson woke up to a warm bed and a dark room. Both were not his own. He attempted to sit up but his body felt like it was underneath a pile of bricks.

'Hello?' He whimpered, his voice weak and his throat dry.

The door opened and the light turned on. Wilson winced at the brightness. The guy that had saved him yesterday stood in the doorway. Wilson got a better look at him now, his hair was blonde and short with some dark streaks. His skin was tanned and he had vibrant purple eyes and two scars across his cheerful face.

'You're up!!' I was starting to get super worried, how do you feel?' The man came further towards him, he seemed relieved.

Wilson backed up a little, blushing, 'Like shit. Where am I? Who are you?'

'OH! Yeah, sorry. My name is Vantacrow Bringer and you are in Zali and I's apartment!' Vantacrow handed Wilson a glass of water, which he gulped down eagerly.

'Zali?' Wilson questioned wearily.

'My boyfriend!' Vanta replied proudly, 'We're a new hero duo, he's a medic! He's the one who fixed you up.'

'Hero's, huh? Never met one before.'

'Well now you have!' He boasted, 'You gotta meet Zali dude, he's making breakfast right now. I'll go tell him you're up.'

The energetic man left briefly before returning with 'Zali', a long, dark-haired man with amber eyes and a long scar over his left eye.

'Hi, it's nice to meet you. What's your name?' His voice was gentle, he had a French accent.

How the hell were these two so hot? Wilson felt his face flush slightly, 'Yu Q. Wilson.'

'Ah! It fits you well, would you like some breakfast? I made crepes.'

Wilson's face lit up, the premise of breakfast was great alone but the fact that it was crepes made things a whole lot better.

'Yes!! Yes please.' He attempted to get up again, failing miserably.

'Oh goodness, please, do not move! You need lots of rest. I will bring the crepes to you.' Zali gently pushed Wilson back onto the pillow, his expression stern.

The pair left, with Vanta chatting Zali's ear off about a stray cat he'd seen whilst on patrol. Wilson sighed, sinking back into the bed. Everything hurt and the fact that he wasn't dead was really starting to bug him. Now, he'd have to do it all again, he only had so many pills left. Disappointment consumed him, nothing ever went his way. His depressing thoughts were interrupted by the smell of hot food, his hero's walked in with breakfast. Zali held the crepes and Vanta held a cup of coffee. They sat down beside him, placing his meal on the bedside table.

'Do you feel up to eating now?' Zali asked, smiling softly.

'Yeah, I'm so hungry.'

'How hungry?' Vanta asked, giggling to himself. Zali laughed softly, rolling his eyes.

'Do you need help eating?' Asked the dark-haired man. The image of Zali feeding him the crepe flashed in Wilsons mind and he blushed, shaking his head.

'No! No I'm fine, could you help me sit up though?'

The pair immediately obliged, carefully adjusting him so that he could comfortably eat, placing the plate in his lap.

'We'll leave you be, give us a shout if you need anything!' Vanta smiled, ruffling the blondes hair.

'Thanks man, I appreciate this. All of it, you didn't have to.'

'We're heroes!' The two of them said in unison, giggling when they realised the coincidence.

Wilson let out a breathy laugh, coughing slightly at the effort. The men left, closing the door, leaving Wilson to his own devices.
