Work Text:
Character: Luna Lovegood
Prompt: (Location) Diagon Alley
Offering her best friend a smile, Luna Lovegood extended her hands to take the shopping basket. Ginny Weasley shoved it at Luna before fleeing towards the restrooms.
“Thank you, Luna, dear,” Mrs. Weasley said with a smile.
“I’m happy to help,” Luna stated.
“Luna, my dear cousin,” sneered Draco Malfoy, turning his attention to her.
Luna donned her airy and cheery smile. “You haven’t called me that since my mum’s funeral,” she said. “I thought you didn’t like me anymore.”
Draco’s sneer disappeared and his eyes narrowed.
Tilling her head to the side, Luna beamed. “I guess it was a case of wrackspurt,” she said before turning. She skipped off to collect the remaining textbooks.
Twenty minutes later she collected her purchases – both her books and Ginny’s books – and she headed outside. Personally, Luna had no interest in waiting around the bookstore for Gilderoy Lockhart’s signing.
“Why, Luna,” Lucius Malfoy greeted as he approached her, “where is your father?”
Airy and cheery expression in place, Luna turned to face her older cousin – her mother and Lucius were second cousins or something. “Father’s in the Sahara,” she replied with a smile. She was only a little bitter that her father ran off to search for hellhounds instead of seeing her off to Hogwarts.
In fact, her father left without even thinking about his daughter. Luna forged a letter from her father to the Weasleys, asking if they could look after her while he was away on important business. The Weasleys were quick to welcome her, setting up a bed in Ginny’s room. It was through the Weasleys that Luna met Harry Potter.
It was hard to read Lucius’ expression. His eyes narrowed a little like he was thinking.
“Luna, dear,” Mr. Weasley said as he approached the pair. His eyes narrowed as he looked at Lucius.
“My cousin was just checking in on me, Mr. Weasley,” she explained, turning to look at her best friend’s father.
Mr. Weasley offered her a smile.
“Anyways,” she said, looking back at Lucius, “I have supplies to purchase.”
“Do you mind shopping with Harry, Ron, and Hermione?” Mr. Weasley asked. He looked a little awkward. He was hiding something.
Luna shook her head. She knew Ginny didn’t really want to be her friend anymore, and it was likely neither of Ginny’s parents knew how to tell her. “Before I go,” she said, “here are Ginny’s books I was holding.”
She handed Mr. Weasley a few textbooks and a small black journal.
Mr. Weasley took the textbooks and he frowned at the small black journal. “This isn’t Ginny’s,” he said, handing it back.
Luna took it with a smile. Turning, she caught sight of Lucius. His expression changed. His silver eyes looked darker and his lips were pressed together. He looked displeased about something.
Not really interested in Lucius or Draco, Luna walked off towards Madam Malkin’s. She needed the school robes and some new casual robes.
“It’s just me and you,” Harry Potter said as he fell in step beside her. “Hope you don’t mind.”
“Not at all,” she beamed.
