: Tom Riddle
Prompt
: (Dialogue) Wand
With his sack of money in hand, Tom Riddle made his way to Ollivander’s. According to Dumbledore, this was the best place to purchase a wand. Tom needed a wand of his own. He had needed one since witnessing Dumbledore perform magic.
Entering the wandshop, Tom was unimpressed. It was narrow and shabby, and there was a thin layer of dust covering the numerous boxes.
A moment after he entered, a wizard with graying hair and pale eyes. The man offered Tom a smile.
“First year?” the man asked.
Tom nodded, waiting to be impressed. It was rather obvious he was a first year since he was young.
The wizard’s pale eyes narrowed. “There’s something about you that seems familiar,” the man muttered, “but I can’t place it.”
That was something Tom found interesting. This was a lead of one of his parents or another family member.
“What is your dominant hand?” the wizard asked, a wand appearing in his right hand.
Tom lifted his right hand.
The wizard nodded. With a flick of his wand, a tape measure began taking measurements of Tom’s hand. He nodded before turning around to the boxes and pulling one out.
“Cedar and dragon heartstring, ten and a half inches,” the man said he opened the box to reveal a wand.
Tom smiled as he reached out to take the wand. This was his wand . He picked it up, expecting something to happen.
“Give it a wave,” the man instructed.
Flicking his wrist, Tom watched as a pile of boxes collapsed.
“No, no,” the wizard said, shaking his head as he took the wand and replaced it in the box.
Tom frowned.
The man quickly grabbed a second box and he gave Tom another wand. This time, flicking the wand resulted in a quill catching on fire. It was the beginning of a pattern. By the tenth wand, Tom was irritated. How hard was it to purchase a wand?
“Yew with a phoenix tailfeather at thirteen and a half inches,” the wizard said, offering a new wand.
This time when Tom took ahold of the wand, he felt something. Waving the wand resulted in a shower of green sparks.
“I think we can expect great things from you,” the older wizard stated as he stared at Tom.
Tom smirked, pride filling him.
