Joel feeds her carefully, first letting her polish off the mac n’ cheese before he moves on to the remnants of their strawberries he’d diced up for her. She eats hungrily, little mouth stained with red juice and chubby fingers searching for more.
Joel studies her worriedly. “You still hungry, sweetpea?”
Sarah taps her fingers together, a recent action she and Tommy had learned at the playground from another mom. The sign for more. All he’s got in the pantry is a half-bowl’s worth of cereal, which was gonna be his dinner.
