Work Text:
The clashing of metal could be heard in the courtyard.
Heavy breathing as the two men went back and forth on the pebble ground, trying to knock each other down.
The tallest man waited for his opening, calculating his next move through the net mask before finally faking out his opponent, jabbing him in the chest.
“Gotcha.”
They bowed to each other, the taller taking his mask off, going over to his bag and grabbing his water bottle to get a sip.
He heard clapping, turning to the noise to see it belonged to someone leaning against the pillars. He cocked a brow. “Fancy seeing you here, Wonwoo.”
Wonwoo smiled, stepping forward. “I actually have come in search of you, Prince Mingyu. Your mother sent me, saying she needed to speak to you.”
Mingyu frowned at that, turning to his opponent, handing him his hat and sword. “Thanks for the lesson, Joshua.”
Joshua nodded, taking his things without a word.
He turned towards Wonwoo. “Let me go change real quick.”
Wonwoo nodded, following him back into the castle. “I figured you would want to so I laid out your outfit in advance before I made my way over.”
Mingyu smiled. “What would I do without you?”
Wonwoo shrugged. “Oh, I don’t know, let’s see...” He trailed off for a second. “Not wear proper attire, be late to everything, never know what meetings to attend-“
Mingyu cut him off, putting his hands up in defense. “Okay, I get it. You’re the best. Although you probably don’t need my praise to know.”
Wonwoo smiled, nodding his head. He paused outside the door, watching Mingyu walk into his room, following in suit.
Mingyu took his white fencing uniform off, discarding it on the floor. Wonwoo’s eyes glanced over his tone chest, watching him pick up the shirt he laid out, putting it on.
“Do you know what they want?”
Wonwoo shook his head, finally turning away to give Mingyu privacy. “Just asked that I retrieve you.”
“You know, I hope this is about getting my own palace. I’d like some peace and quiet from them.”
“New palace means new servants.”
Mingyu grabbed Wonwoo’s arm, the servant turning to look at him. “I wouldn’t get rid of you ever. You’re staying with me for life.”
Wonwoo smiled, straightening out Mingyu’s clothes. “Good to know. Ready?”
Mingyu nodded, following Wonwoo down the hall.
Wonwoo had served as Mingyu’s personal servant when the boy turned eighteen and Wonwoo was only nineteen. He worked hard to get this position, proving he was mature and qualified for his age.
Another reason was the king and queen were wanting their son to have someone close to his age service him anyways.
Wonwoo was now twenty-six, Mingyu twenty-five. He knew Mingyu inside and out. Every little thing about him. The good and the bad. The real him.
Which is why it isn’t a surprise Wonwoo ended up with a tiny crush on the prince. There was moments they shared that made Wonwoo feel like him and Mingyu were something more.
But that was something he kept to himself.
They stopped in front of two double doors, Wonwoo knocking.
“Come in.”
Wonwoo opened the door, Mingyu walking inside.
Wonwoo turned towards the large table where the King and Queen sat, bowing. He turned to leave. “Wait Wonwoo!” He stopped, holding the door. “We actually want you to stay.”
Wonwoo’s eyes widen, nodding his head as he walked in, closing the door behind him before standing next to the wall.
Mingyu glanced at him from where he was sitting, turning and looking at his parents. “What did you two need to speak to me about?”
The Queen smiled. “Your father and I have been talking, and we have decided to give you your own place.”
Wonwoo could practically see Mingyu’s big smile from where he was standing.
“That’s good news to hear. When do they start building?”
“They have already been working on it, we just wanted to keep it a secret so we could surprise you. It’ll be on the west hill, on the other side of the kingdom. It should be done by your birthday. You’ll get a nice view of the sea and of the surrounding town. It’s a good area. So, consider it a gift.”
Mingyu nodded, “I appreciate it. I always wanted my own place.”
His mother smiled, nodding her head.
“There’s just one condition.” His father spoke.
Mingyu frowned. “And what’s that?”
“We want you to get married by then.” The King continued, the Queen nodding her head in agreement. “You’re at the age where you should settle down. Possibly give us a few grandkids who can someday take your place.”
Wonwoo felt his heart break. The thought of Mingyu getting married was something that pained him.
“No.”
Wonwoo looked towards Mingyu, who was shaking his head.
“Excuse me?” The King said back, eyes sharpened as he stared Mingyu down.
“No, I will not get married. I don’t want to get married now! Especially an arranged one!”
The Queen frowned. “Mingyu, honey, you need to if you want to be King someday. You’re next in line for the throne and if not you then it’ll be your father’s brother and his family. Look, I already set up some dates with four neighboring princesses and Wonwoo will be there to help!”
Wonwoo felt his throat tighten. He has to help Mingyu find a bride?
He’d rather get kicked out of the kingdom for life than do so.
“Your majesty, I’m not sure if it’s appropriate for me to be involved.” Wonwoo spoke tentatively.
The Queen shook her head, waving him off. “Nonsense dear! It would be perfect to have you there! I need you to chaperone to make sure Mingyu doesn’t purposely run them off. Plus, I need you to set up the dates for them! We’ll give you a list of what each princess enjoys so you can go from there.” The King nodded in agreement.
Wonwoo faked a smile, nodding. “Yes, ma’am.”
The King sighed, looking at Mingyu. “You either accept it or you don’t get your palace.”
Wonwoo watched Mingyu, jaw clenched, hands balled up in a fist.
“Fine.”
“Good! Your first date is tomorrow! She’ll be here at noon so make sure you are dressed sharply. Wonwoo, please have everything fixed by then!”
Mingyu stood up, signaling Wonwoo to follow.
Wonwoo bid the King and Queen ‘bye’, quickly following Mingyu.
“Stupid fucking arranged marriage. Who do they think they are huh?!”
Wonwoo didn’t say anything, silently walking behind him.
Mingyu continued mumbling under his breath, cursing.
They made it to Mingyu’s room, Mingyu flopping down on his bed with a groan.
“Want me to give you some privacy?” Wonwoo stood by the door.
Mingyu raised up, shaking his head. “Can you come rub my back for me?”
Wonwoo smiled, nodding, closing the door behind him.
He made his way over to the bed, sitting up against the headboard, putting a pillow behind his back for comfort.
Wonwoo gently ran his fingers up and down the prince’s back.
“Look on the bright side, you’ll get your castle.”
Mingyu snorted, “Yeah but with someone I don’t love.” He glanced up at Wonwoo. “At least you’ll be there for the dates.”
“Yeah,” Wonwoo grimaced. “I’ll be there.”
———
Wonwoo was exhausted.
He had gotten only three hours of sleep, staying up to study each princesses profile. All their likes and dislikes. Things they enjoyed doing.
By the time he formed a whole day of activities for Mingyu and the first princess, he realized how late it was and how early he’d have to get up.
So with only three hours of sleep, safe to say he was cranky and tired. And he needed everything to be perfect.
He arrived at the castle early, way earlier than usual, to meet with each staff. He met with the cooks to make the perfect meal for the princess. He met with the knights to prepare for the horse ride they would be taking. Everything had to be perfect.
Mingyu needed to be perfect.
He made his way to the prince’s door, knocking. He heard the rough voice telling him to come in before opening the door.
Mingyu was still in his bed, reading some papers. He glanced at Wonwoo.
“You look like shit.”
Wonwoo glared at him. “Thanks.” He walked over to his closest, pulling out a dark purple shirt with dark pants. The princess liked purple.
He heard Mingyu shuffle behind him. “These women have a very particular taste.”
Wonwoo nodded. “I know, I read it all last night.”
“Is that why you look like you’re ready to snap?” Mingyu spoke, standing close behind him.
Wonwoo turned, shoving the clothes in his hand. “I can always get you another servant?”
Mingyu chuckled, grabbing Wonwoo’s hand, pulling him close to him. “You know I’m just joking.”
Wonwoo sighed, nodding. He ran his other hand through his hair. “I know, I’m just tired. I spent all night and morning planning today. I want it to be perfect for you, and the Queen and King.”
Mingyu caressed his face gently. “I bet it is. Thank you.”
Wonwoo smiled, gently pulling away. “Get dressed, we have a long day ahead.”
———
The date was awkward.
Wonwoo noticed the girl was trying to have a conversation during lunch but she seemed so shy and awkward while Mingyu held a stone face, no emotion showing.
The only chatter at the table was from their parents.
Wonwoo felt sorry for her, regardless of his feelings for Mingyu.
She was a pretty girl. Long brown hair and a beautiful purple dress to match Mingyu’s fit. She was perfect.
Wonwoo pulled him aside afterwards and told him to loosen up before he got scolded.
It seemed to help.
Wonwoo sat next to a tree, a few feet away the princess and Mingyu were walking, horses by their sides, chatting about whatever.
A few knights were scattered, Wonwoo’s own horse tied up to the tree he was leaning against.
Wonwoo leaned his head back, letting his eyes flutter close. He was exhausted.
Maybe he good take a quick nap while the prince and princess chatted. After all, this wasn’t his date and he was sure Mingyu wouldn’t leave.
Just as he was dozing off, someone woke him. “Sleeping on the job, Mr. Jeon?”
Wonwoo peeked one eye open, glancing up at Mingyu who was smirking down at him.
“I figured I could take a quick nap.” He opened his other eye, glancing over to see the princess standing alone.
“Are you done?”
Mingyu nodded, holding his hand out. “Yep, she’s ready to go. Let’s get you home to rest.”
Wonwoo took Mingyu’s hand, standing up. He sighed stumbling a little to his horse. “Are you sure? That wasn’t a long chat.”
Mingyu shrugged, steady hand on his back. “She said she was bored.” He paused. “Won, how about I let you ride back with me?”
He could see the concerned look on Mingyu’s face so he knew better to object. “Are you sure?”
He nodded, leading Wonwoo over to his horse. He helped him up, hoping on as well.
“Wrap your arms around me.”
Wonwoo snorted. “I’ll fall asleep.”
Mingyu chuckled. “It’ll be okay.”
Wonwoo wrapped his arms around Mingyu’s stomach, leaning against his back. He let out a sigh, closing his eyes.
“Please lead his horse back.”
Wonwoo didn’t bother to see who he was talking to, sleep taking over his body.
———
Wonwoo was able to take a nap, waking up in Mingyu’s bed.
It was embarrassing to say the least.
He was now sitting in a study room, going over the next date with some of the other servants.
“So, it says she like archery, please call up Kwon Soonyoung and have him make a reservation. Make sure to specify that only us. Don’t need any interruptions.” They nodded, writing it down. “Prepare everyone for the long travel as well. He’s three towns over from us so it’ll be at least a four hour ride over.”
They agreed, Wonwoo looking over his notes at what else needed to be done.
He opened his mouth to speak, hearing a knock on the door. It opened, Mingyu popping his head in.
“Is this a bad time?”
Wonwoo shook his head, beckoning him to come in. He turned to the other servants. “That should be it for now, I’ll talk to the chef!”
They nodded, bowing at Mingyu as they left the room.
Mingyu smiled, leaning against the table. “Working hard?”
“Planning your next date.”
Mingyu sighed. “I’m over dates and it’s only been one. The girl asked if I wanted to hangout tomorrow since they would still be in town.”
Wonwoo cocked a brow. “And you said?”
Mingyu smiled. “No, I’m busy. And I am. I have to go train with the knights.”
Wonwoo sighed, nodding his head. “Guessing she’s not the one?”
Mingyu shook his head. “Nope. But let’s not talk about that. I wanted to ask you something.”
Wonwoo went through his checklist, making sure he wasn’t missing anything. “Go on.”
“Do you want to go somewhere?”
Wonwoo looked up at him. “Right now?”
Mingyu nodded. “Yeah, just us. Come on.”
Wonwoo thought for a moment before nodding his head, stacking his papers together neatly before standing up.
“Where to?”
Mingyu held his hand out, Wonwoo taking it as he lead him out of the study room. They walked through the halls before stepping outside near the horse stables.
Mingyu let his hand go. “Up for another ride?”
Wonwoo shrugged. “Sure.”
He walked over to his own horse, climbing on. Mingyu climbed on his, taking the lead as they slowly trotted down the designated trail.
It was quiet as they rode side by side before making it to a clearly.
The sun was setting, mixtures of red, orange, and yellow bled through the sky.
“Beautiful, isn’t it?”
Mingyu looked at him. “It is.”
Wonwoo smiled. “So? What are we doing out here?”
Mingyu looked away, staring off into the distance. “What do you think of marriage?”
Wonwoo paused. “Like in general or yours?”
“Both.”
Wonwoo thought for a moment. He couldn’t be completely honest with his feelings but just enough where it wouldn’t be too obvious.
“I think marriage is sacred concept. To promise your all to one person, to love them forever. It sounds perfect. To have someone dedicated to just you and only you. But I feel like you don’t need marriage for that. I feel like you can express that type of loyalty without it.” He glanced at Mingyu. “But people get married for many reasons and maybe some of those reasons, we won’t understand. Maybe it’s not for us to understand, only the two parties involved. As for yours, all I wish is for you to be happy.” He smiled, genuinely.
Mingyu gave him a big smile. “Aren’t you a bit of a romantic?”
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, gripping the reigns of his horse. “Why did you ask anyways?”
Mingyu shrugged. “I wanted to know, that’s all.”
“Well, I may be a romantic but so are you. I know you have a softer side, but these girls won’t believe you if you don’t loosen up.” Wonwoo giggled, watching Mingyu groan.
“I’d rather not, I barely know them besides what’s written on paper. Besides, you’re the only one who gets to see my soft side.” Mingyu teased.
Wonwoo felt his face flush, looking away. “Whatever, we better start heading back before someone gets worried.”
Mingyu smirked, teasing glint in his eyes. “Wanna race?”
Wonwoo looked over at him, grinning. “Oh you’re on!”
———
Wonwoo was more prepared the following week for the arrival of the next princess, already having the day planned.
He skipped to Mingyu’s room, knocking before opening the door.
He frowned as he saw Mingyu was still in bed, asleep.
“Mingyu, time to wake up.”
He heard a groan.
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, making his way through the dark room towards the window, opening the curtains to let the light in.
“Won!” He heard a whine, turning to look at Mingyu.
“None of that. We have a fun day ahead of us today! This one likes archery and I know you enjoy that!”
He made his way over to the closet, pulling out a green shirt, the princess’s favorite color.
“Just five more minutes.” He watched Mingyu’s eyes flutter shut.
He laid the clothes out, walking over and throwing the covers off of him.
“Mingyu, please, just-“ Wonwoo let out a yelp, Mingyu grabbing him and yanking him on top of him.
Wonwoo felt his face heat up as he landed on Mingyu’s bare chest.
Mingyu wrapped his arms around him, shoving his face in his hair. “There, much better.” Wonwoo couldn’t stop his heart racing as he laid there.
“You are going to be the death of me.”
“Oh Won, I would never let you die.” Wonwoo snorted, raising up to look at Mingyu.
“I really think you’ll enjoy today. She likes all the same activities as you.”
Mingyu cracked one eye open, looking at him, contemplating. “Can you even hold a bow?”
Wonwoo glared, punching Mingyu’s chest as he got up. “Get dressed now before I leave.” Mingyu chuckled, raising up. “Coming my dear.”
———
Wonwoo sat back at the archery field, watching Mingyu and this week’s princess set up at their station, bows in hand.
This princess had short red hair and wore a matching green dress. She didn’t take any of Mingyu’s silence, forcing a conversation out him and whenever he was smart with her, she was smart back.
Wonwoo thought it was hilarious.
But eventually Mingyu opened up, engaging in conversation with her. Wonwoo was happy to say the least.
Although he was in love with the prince, he still wanted what was best for him.
“Well, well, well. Jeon Wonwoo.” Wonwoo turned, watching Soonyoung walk up to him, a grin on his face. “Thought you would never step foot in this place.”
Wonwoo smiled. “I’d say it’s against my will.” He nodded his head towards the couple.
Soonyoung frowned. “I hate they have you doing this.”
Wonwoo sighed. “I mean, what can I say? They’d have me kicked out if I refused.”
Soonyoung shrugged. “Mingyu wouldn’t dare allow that. Plus Jihoon would let you work with him if needed.” He clapped his hands together. “Now, how about we get a bow in your hands?”
Wonwoo laughed. “Yeah right. I doubt I know how to hold one let alone shoot.”
“That’s why I’m here.” He sent a wink his way.
Wonwoo glanced at Mingyu, watching him laugh at something the princess said. He was occupied so it wouldn’t hurt to try. He followed Soonyoung to a station.
“So, pick up the bow and try and hold the arrow.”
Wonwoo did as he was told, holding the arrow against the string as he gently pulled it back. He watched the arrow slowly move away, Soonyoung’s loud laugh in his ear.
He pouted, shoving his friend lightly. “I thought you were suppose to be a teacher!”
Soonyoung nodded, wiping away fake tears as his laughter died down. “I’m sorry, you’re right! Here let me help you get the arrow stable.”
Soonyoung stood behind him, putting his hands over Wonwoo’s, gently guiding the arrow onto the bow. “Now pull back gently…” Wonwoo did as he was told. “Aim it…” He helped guide it towards the target out in the field. “And shoot.”
Wonwoo let it go, watching the arrow land on one of the outer rings. His eyes widen. “Look at that! I did it!”
He turned to Soonyoung, hugging him in excitement. “You’re welcome, that lesson was free, next one will cost you!” Soonyoung said, patting him on the back.
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, leaning back to grab another arrow to do it again.
“I don’t want to alarm you but Prince Charming looks like he wants to shoot an arrow at me.” Soonyoung whispered in his ear.
Wonwoo frowned, glancing over to notice Mingyu staring, a look in his eyes that he’s never seen before.
Wonwoo sent him a questioning look, Mingyu looking away as he shot his arrow, landing it on the target.
Wonwoo sighed, looking at Soonyoung who had a knowing smile. “Seems to me like he was jealous.”
Wonwoo laughed, cheeks flushed. “Shut up. He’d never get jealous over me.”
Soonyoung smirked. “I wouldn’t say that.”
———
Wonwoo sat in Mingyu’s room that evening, folding his clothes and putting them away.
The door opened, Mingyu walking in with a sigh.
“Hey, did you have a fun day?” Wonwoo smiled.
“Yeah it was okay. I’m assuming you had a fun day learning from Soonyoung?” Mingyu didn’t look his way, walking into his bathroom.
Wonwoo thought back to what Soonyoung had said.
“I did actually, why do you ask? Are you jealous I’ll decide to leave you to work for him and Jihoon?” Wonwoo had a playful smile on his face, following him.
Mingyu frowned, throwing his shirt off. “I’m jealous you didn’t ask me for help.” He crossed his arms over his chest with a huff.
Wonwoo snorted, walking over to Mingyu, doing his best to ignore the man’s toned chest. “You were on a date, one that I’m not suppose to be interrupting. I couldn’t just pull you away from her to teach me.”
Mingyu looked away as Wonwoo approached him, a pout forming on his lips. “I wouldn’t have cared.”
“But your date would have.” Wonwoo smiled, reaching a hand up and running it through Mingyu’s hair. “Besides, you can teach me anytime whenever you’re free, okay?”
Mingyu looked over at him, taking Wonwoo’s hand in his, squeezing it. “How about now?”
Wonwoo looked at him confused. “Now?”
Mingyu nodded. “We can set up our own targets and go into the field. Just the two of us.”
Wonwoo thought for a moment before agreeing. “Okay, let’s do it.”
Mingyu grinned wide, pulling Wonwoo in for a hug before letting him go.
“It’ll be great.”
And that’s how Wonwoo found himself in the nearby field, watching Mingyu set up two sacks of apples he said he randomly found. Wonwoo didn’t believe him, he knows he probably stole them from the kitchen storage room.
Mingyu walked over to him once he was done, a huge grin on his face. “Show me what you got.”
Wonwoo nodded, picking up the bow off the ground. He grabbed an arrow from the bag, holding it up. He tried remembering what Soonyoung taught him, steadying it as he pulled the arrow back, letting it go.
It shot through the air, missing the sack entirely.
Wonwoo frowned as Mingyu snickered beside him. “Nice, almost got it.”
“Whatever.” He mumbled, passing the bow to Mingyu who gracefully took it.
“Watch and learn.” Mingyu picked up the arrow, putting it on string and pulling back. He closed one eye, aiming it before letting it go. It shot through the air, stabbing the bag of apples.
“I get it, you’re amazing. Now shouldn’t you be teaching me?” Wonwoo glared, taking the bow from Mingyu’s hands.
“Sorry, you’re right. You know I love showing off to you.” Mingyu smirked, grabbing an arrow.
“Yeah you’re amazing, I’m sure you don’t need me to remind you.” Wonwoo teased, Mingyu letting out a chuckle.
“Alright, put the arrow on like you’ve been doing.” He handed the arrow to Wonwoo, who put it on the string.
“Now what?” Wonwoo asked.
“Now, we’ll aim it like this.” Mingyu came up behind him, putting his hands on top of Wonwoo’s. Wonwoo felt his heart race, being this close to Mingyu.
Mingyu helped him aim the bow, moving him to a good spot. “Focus and tell me if the angles right.” Mingyu spoke in his ear.
Wonwoo shuddered nodding his head. He took a deep breath, closing one eye to see.
“It is.”
“Pull back.” Wonwoo pulled the arrow back, Mingyu’s hand never leaving his. “And let go.”
Wonwoo let go, the arrow shooting through the air and landing in the middle of the sack.
Wonwoo grinned, turning to Mingyu. “I did it!”
Mingyu smiled, looking down at him. “You did.”
Wonwoo noticed how close they were, looking away as he felt his cheeks heat up. “I guess I did it with your help, of course.”
Mingyu chuckled. “Come on, let’s go get the arrows and see if you can do it without my help.”
Wonwoo smiled, nodding his head. They walked towards the targets. “Will you still help me if needed?”
Mingyu nudged his shoulder gently. “Of course. I’ll always help you, no matter what.”
———
The following week, was Mingyu’s next date and it was to be a picnic at a waterfall.
Wonwoo didn’t know where any waterfalls were located but with enough research and asking around, he found the perfect place.
Which is where they were now.
As a few guards were scattered through the forest, Mingyu and this week’s princess were sat on a blanket, food scattered as they talked amongst themselves.
Wonwoo made sure to pack her favorite meal, a few things for Mingyu as well.
The waterfall in the background was the perfect touch, flowing into a stream. Amongst the beautiful nature that surrounded it.
Wonwoo sat by the stream, feet dipped in the water as he observed.
This princess was beautiful. Her black hair flowed beautifully, despite the journey here and the winds.
She wore a tight red dress, matching Mingyu’s red shirt, that definitely showed off more than what should be shown of a princess. Wonwoo wouldn’t be surprised if Mingyu found her attractive or even wanted to spend more time with her that evening.
Wonwoo looked away, kicking his feet gently in the stream.
“Hey Won!” Wonwoo looked up, noticing Mingyu and the princess making their way towards him.
“Yes? Is something wrong?” Wonwoo asked worriedly, standing up.
“Oh no, we were going to go for a swim and wanted to know if you wanted to join?” Mingyu smiled wide.
Wonwoo sighed, shaking his head. “No it’s okay, I’ll take care of the picnic while you two enjoy yourself.”
The princess nodded, already beginning to undress herself. Wonwoo quickly looked away, walking over to the picnic area.
He begin packing everything up, hearing splashing in the distance.
He folded everything neatly, taking it over to one of the guards to put away. He turned back to see the princess splashing Mingyu, giggling away.
Mingyu looked over at him, beckoning him over.
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, walking near the stream. “Yes?”
“Won’t you get in with me, please?”
Wonwoo laughed, shaking his head. “Not right now, just enjoy your time okay?”
“Mingyu! Let’s go under the waterfall together!” The princess shouted, waving over.
Wonwoo turned to walk away, Mingyu’s wet hand grabbing his arm to stop him. “Later tonight?” He whispered.
Wonwoo looked at him confused before realizing what he meant. He nodded. “Later tonight.”
Mingyu grinned, swimming away.
———
As night approached, Wonwoo bid ‘goodnight’ to some of the servants as he made his way towards the exit.
As he walked the halls, he felt someone grab his arm, letting out a squeal.
He heard that familiar chuckle, turning to glare at Mingyu.
“Jesus, Mingyu! You scared me! What are you even doing up?” Wonwoo sighed, doing his best to relax his heart beat.
“Did you forget? You said you’d swim with me this evening.” Mingyu held up two towels, proving a point.
“Oh. I didn’t know if you’d be tired or not.” Wonwoo sighed. “How are we going to get there?”
Mingyu smirked. “Trust me.”
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, taking Mingyu’s hand as he lead him through a different area, where the horse stables where.
Mingyu’s horse was out of the stable already, tied up and waiting on them.
“You really thought this through.” Wonwoo said. Mingyu nodded.
He helped Wonwoo up on his horse, climbing on as well.
Wonwoo held the towels, as well as Mingyu, as the man trotted away. Taking them on the same journey they went on earlier today.
It was a quiet ride, Wonwoo enjoying the evening scenery. He enjoyed quiet moments with Mingyu like this.
As they made their way to the stream, Wonwoo could hear the waterfall already, the crashing of the waves loud and clear.
“Here we are.” Mingyu stopped the horse, climbing down and tying the horse to a tree. Mingyu helped Wonwoo down, walking them over to the stream.
“I bet it’s going to be cold.” Wonwoo said, taking his clothes off. He looked over at Mingyu, noticing him staring at him.
Wonwoo blushed under his stare, “Everything okay?”
Mingyu nodded, swallowing slowly. “Yep.” He got undressed as well, stripping down to his underwear.
Wonwoo slowly stepped in the water, hissing slightly at the cool feeling on his skin.
Mingyu joined him, letting out a sigh. “Pretty nice, huh?”
Wonwoo nodded, slowly wading his way out. “It is, pretty too. Did you go under the waterfall?”
Mingyu nodded, “Yeah, do you want to go?”
Wonwoo smiled. “Sure.”
He swam behind Mingyu, both of them going through the waterfall together. Wonwoo wiped the water off his face, looking at Mingyu.
“What did you two talk about?”
Mingyu shrugged. “Nothing really. She tried to seduce me though back here.”
Wonwoo eyes widen. “Really?”
Mingyu snorted. “Yeah it was pathetic. Felt bad for her.”
Wonwoo bit his lip, looking back at the falling water. He could see the evening sky from here, the orange reflecting on the water.
Wonwoo felt a splash, turning to look at Mingyu who was grinning.
“Mingyu.” Wonwoo warned.
“What?” Mingyu faked innocence. “I didn’t do anything.”
Wonwoo rolled his eyes reaching over and splashing water back into Mingyu’s face. “Okay, now it’s on.”
Wonwoo giggled, Mingyu reaching out and grabbing his hand, pulling him close to him. He wrapped an arm tight around Wonwoo’s waste, holding him steady. “Get ready because I’m going to dunk you!”
“Wait! Mingyu!” Wonwoo wrapped his arms around Mingyu’s neck, holding on tight. He closed his eyes as he felt Mingyu lift him up, bracing himself.
But it didn’t happen.
Mingyu let out a laugh, Wonwoo opening his eyes to glare.
“Come on Won, you know I would never do that to you.” He looked up at him grinning.
Wonwoo smiled, heart racing as he realized how close they were. If he titled his head the right way, they could definitely kiss.
Mingyu’s eyes flickered to his lips, licking his own.
Wonwoo couldn’t handle this.
Wonwoo raised up, pushing Mingyu underwear with a laugh, freeing himself from the man’s arms.
He swam away from him watching Mingyu come back up, a grin on his face.
“I deserved that but now, I’m definitely dunking you! Come here!”
Wonwoo let out a squeal, swimming away as Mingyu chased after him in the stream.
———
The following week was a new date and a new princess.
Wonwoo was starting to think this was too much. Especially for him.
They were approaching in a garden, the princess in question having flowers on her list. Wonwoo figured this would be a perfect opportunity for Mingyu to make her a bouquet.
They arrived at the garden, Mingyu and the princess stepping out together, both wearing orange.
Wonwoo thought Mingyu looked great in orange.
This princess was a cheery one and non-stopped talked. Regardless of the topic of conversation, she was always engaged.
Wonwoo enjoyed her.
“Oh wow.” Wonwoo looked around the place, eyes sparkling in amazement at all the pretty flowers around.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” The princess spoke beside him, eyes searching around.
“I didn’t know you liked flowers.”
Wonwoo glanced at Mingyu, nodding. “Of course, I do. Who doesn’t?”
“People love being gifted flowers, Prince Kim. It’s an act of love for most. One that many people adore.” She smiled, heading over to one of the entrance ways.
Wonwoo turned and looked at Mingyu. “I’m going to go walk around while you two enjoy your date, okay?”
Mingyu frowned, nodding his head. “Just don’t go too far.”
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, grinning. “I won’t, Prince Kim.”
Wonwoo ended up strolling a different part of the garden away from Mingyu and the princess for the remainder of their date.
It was kind of nice not having to sit and watch the man he loved flirt with someone else.
It was also nice enjoying the beautiful flowers.
When it was time to leave, a guard had approached him, fetching him at the request of Mingyu.
When he left the garden, the princess and Mingyu were waiting in their carriage. Wonwoo felt bad.
Later that evening though, when Wonwoo taking his leave for the evening, Mingyu had approached him, bouquet in hand.
“What’s that?” Wonwoo smiled.
“It’s for you. I picked them at the garden.” Mingyu held the bouquet out. “I hope you like them.” He looked nervous.
Wonwoo smiled wide, taking the bouquet. “Oh Mingyu, I love it. They’re so beautiful.” He held the flowers close to his chest.
“Thank you so much.”
Mingyu smiled, relaxing. “I’m glad. I was waiting for the right time to give them to you.”
Wonwoo couldn’t help but be amazed. “You’re the first person to give me flowers.”
Mingyu looked at him with wide eyes. “Really?”
Wonwoo blushed. “Really.”
“Well, I’ll keep that in mind then. Now, how about I walk you home?” He held his hand out.
“Are you sure?”
Mingyu nodded, Wonwoo taking his hand. “Positive.”
———
Wonwoo went to the castle that morning feeling more nervous than he ever felt before. He had received a message early morning that the Queen and King wanted to speak to him and Mingyu.
Wonwoo was more worried about if he did something wrong.
It was a new week and Mingyu still hadn’t picked any of the four princesses as his potential wife.
They must blame Wonwoo for that. That was the whole point of all of this.
Or they must have thought Wonwoo was interfering. They had to of known about their little meetings after each date and assumed it was something more.
They must have know about Wonwoo’s feelings for Mingyu.
Wonwoo walked into Mingyu’s room, without knocking, startling the prince who was getting dressed.
“Well hello to you too. I didn’t know you were so eager to see me.” Mingyu teased.
Wonwoo ignored him, pacing back and forth as he begin to speak. “Your mother and father asked to speak to us. Do you think I did something wrong? That I screwed up or made a princess upset?”
“Won…” Mingyu stopped buttoning his shirt, turning to his friend as Wonwoo continued to ramble. He was concerned for him, he had never saw him this worked up.
“I mean, I did everything right! By the book! Do you think they are going to fire me? Because you have not accepted anybody as your bride yet? They have to be questioning my decisions!”
Mingyu grabbed Wonwoo’s hands, the boy staring up at him with tears in his eyes.
“No one is firing you. Ever. Over my dead body. And I doubt that’s what this is about. You’ve done everything perfect Won. It’s me who they have a issue with.” Mingyu sighed, pulling Wonwoo in for a hug to help him relax.
Wonwoo held onto Mingyu, hiding his face in the man’s chest. “I don’t want to be away from you.”
“Me either.” Mingyu whispered.
They stood there in silence, Mingyu holding Wonwoo tight.
Wonwoo calmed down, taking a deep breath before pulling away.
“Sorry.”
Mingyu smiled at him, shaking his head. “Don’t ever apologize. Go clean up while I finish getting ready and we’ll go together, okay?”
Wonwoo nodded. “Okay.”
He walked into Mingyu’s bathroom, doing his best to clean up and to not look like he cried.
Once he was done, he walked back into the room to see Mingyu already dressed. He looked at him with a smile. “Ready?”
Wonwoo nodded. “Ready, let’s go.”
They walked through the hallway together, no one saying a word.
It reminded Wonwoo of their meeting with King and Queen a few weeks ago.
They stood in front of the door, Wonwoo knocking.
“Come in!”
Wonwoo opened the door, allowing Mingyu to walk in first. He followed, closing the door behind them. He took a deep breath, going to stand against the wall while Mingyu took a seat.
“Mother, father. You needed to speak to us?” Mingyu spoke.
His father nodded. “It’s about your dates with the princesses.”
Wonwoo felt his heart race.
“Oh Wonwoo dear, don’t look so nervous. It’s nothing you’ve done. In fact, everything you’ve done has been perfect, the neighboring kingdoms agreed.” The Queen smiled at him.
Wonwoo nodded, relaxing a bit.
“We are wanting to try a different approach. We have set you up on your own date with a new princess. Here’s a list of everything she enjoys and what you’ll do.” The Queen passed Mingyu a piece of paper from across the table. She held one up for Wonwoo, who walked over and grabbed it.
He read over it, frowning. He hadn’t gotten this one before.
“As you can see, she’s a good girl. She loves the ocean and lives near one which is perfect for you considering the location of your new home.” The Queen spoke, hopeful. “Her and her family will be arriving tomorrow. And Wonwoo dear, you don’t have to join them. In fact, you can take the day off. I’m sure you need a break from this anyways.” She said teasingly.
“What?” Mingyu shook his head. “When have I ever gone anywhere without Wonwoo by my side? He’s been through all my dates, why not this one? And he’s my servant.”
The Queen frowned. “Mingyu, Wonwoo is allowed to have a day off. Don’t be so harsh.”
Before Mingyu could argue, Wonwoo interrupted them. “It’s okay, I don’t mind missing out on this one. Besides, I don’t really like seafood or the ocean anyways.” He gave a small smile.
Mingyu stared at him, the Queen and King nodding.
Mingyu looked over at his parents, jaw clenched. “What’s the deal breaker?”
The Queen paused. “What?”
“Come on, I’m not dumb. You have it all planned and Wonwoo isn’t even coming along. So what is it?”
It was quiet, the feeling in the room turning tense.
The Queen spoke first. “Honey, I don’t know-“
“She’s the one you’re marrying.” The King spoke.
Wonwoo gripped the paper he was holding, watching Mingyu boil with anger.
“What?”
The King nodded. “Me and her father spoke and we have decided the marriage will benefit the both of our Kingdoms. And with your new place being built near the sea, we can combine Kingdoms.”
Mingyu let out a laugh, shaking his head. “Unbelievable. So the palace isn’t really a birthday gift, it’s a beneficial gift for you.”
Wonwoo frowned, the King glaring at his son.
“It’s beneficial for everyone, including you. One day you will realize that. You’ll do as you’re told and run this kingdom and theirs. You are not ruining this blood line just because you want to run around and do nothing. This is your responsibility, what you were born and raised to do. No more arguing against it or I’ll have your title taken away immediately!” The King slammed his hand on the table causing Wonwoo to jump.
No one said a word.
Wonwoo felt like running out the doors.
“Okay.”
Wonwoo’s eyes widened. Mingyu just gave in? Just like that?
The idea that his title could be taken must have really set it all in place.
The King nodded. “Good. Now go read up on her and be up and ready tomorrow. And learn that Wonwoo won’t always be there to help you with everything.”
Mingyu glanced his way, expression unreadable. Wonwoo couldn’t help but sadly agree.
———
The next day approached and Wonwoo slept in.
It was odd for him, never truly having a day off. Always being around Mingyu during some point during the days.
This was all new to him.
He couldn’t help but think about how their date was going. If it truly was going well. If the princess was beautiful and kind just like the rest.
Though those negative thoughts consumed his mind, Wonwoo couldn’t just sit around and nope all day.
He had things he needed to do.
He first tidied up around his small home. It was a little cottage that the kingdom provided him so he could have his own space and not be at the palace 24/7.
Mingyu had been upset at first about it but got over it when Wonwoo said he could visit whenever he wanted.
Aside from cleaning, he even made a trip to town to run a few errands.
It felt like he was just like everyone else, a simple villager and not someone who worked in a palace.
It was kind of nice.
By the time night had approached, Wonwoo was curled up on his bed, reading some old book he never got to finish.
Just as he was getting into the intense part of the story, he heard quiet knocking on his door.
He put his book to the side, getting up and opening the door. He frowned. “Mingyu? What are you doing here so late?” He looked around. “And without a guard? That’s dangerous!”
Mingyu shrugged. “I wanted to see you.”
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, stepping aside to let him in. Wonwoo shut the door behind them, turning to Mingyu.
“She must like pink.” He mused.
Mingyu looked down at his shirt, groaning. “Yeah, too much pink. Pretty annoying too. She likes the ocean but almost threw a fit when the water touched her!” Mingyu sighed, taking his shirt off.
Wonwoo’s eyes widen. “What are you doing?!”
“What do you mean? I’m taking this off. I can’t sleep in it.” Mingyu stated like it was the most obvious thing in the world.
Wonwoo deadpanned. “Who said you could stay?”
Mingyu pouted. “Pretty please?”
Wonwoo sighed. “Fine but just remember, my bed isn’t big enough for both of us so we’ll be squished together.” He pointed out, walking over to lay down while Mingyu undressed.
Mingyu stripped down to his underwear, turning off the light. “I’m not complaining.”
Wonwoo ignored his comment, making room for Mingyu to get under the covers. He sighed, facing Wonwoo on his side.
“So I’m guessing it didn’t go well?”
Mingyu frowned. “Not at all. But what can I say? You heard my dad.”
Wonwoo understood but a part of him wanted to tell Mingyu that he could say no. But what good would that do?
“I understand.”
“Just so you know, they want to have our engagement party in the next few days. They are inviting everyone to join, even those poor princesses I went out with. And then next week, they want to have the wedding.” Mingyu whispered beside him, grabbing his hand.
Wonwoo gripped his hand. “Why are they rushing you into this?”
“I don’t know. I guess it’s for that treaty. My father so power hungry that he could care less about me. I’m so over it Won. I’m ready for it all to end.”
“I know.” Wonwoo sighed. “Me too.”
“You’ll still be by my side right?”
“Yes, always.”
Wonwoo didn’t sound to convincing himself.
———
It was the day of the engagement party and Wonwoo found that he wished he had the day off.
He stood against the wall, watching as Mingyu and his now fiancée walked around the room together, mingling with the guest.
His heart-ached. He wished it was him.
“I’m surprised he agreed to that so easily.” A voice spoke from beside him.
He turned, seeing it was the red headed princess, the one who liked archery.
“E-Excuse me?”
She snorted, taking a sip of her drink before speaking. “I’m surprised he agreed to marry her so easily.”
Wonwoo nodded slowly. “Yeah.”
She nodded. “See her over there,” She pointed towards a girl standing alone. Wonwoo recognized her as the first princess Mingyu went on a date with. “She said that Mingyu made her lead your horse back while you fell asleep on him.”
Wonwoo’s eyes widen. “R-Really? I didn’t know, I should apologize to her immediately.”
The princess laughed, shaking her head. “Don’t worry about it. She knew and accepted it.”
“Knew what?”
The princess looked at him. “That Mingyu is in love with you.”
Wonwoo felt his heart stop. “What?”
“Come on, it’s so easy to tell. And it’s easy to see you feel the same. At our date, all he talked about was you. And when you let that archery guy help you, he kept trying to show off to see if you’d notice, like I wasn’t there.” She shrugged like it was the most obvious thing ever.
Wonwoo didn’t know what to say.
“Her over there,” She pointed at the third princess who was mingling with other. “She said that at their waterfall date that when she stripped down to get in the water, he didn’t bat an eye at her. Which as she said is unusual for guys to do. But he kept his eyes on you the whole time.”
Wonwoo’s face flushed.
“And then the last one said that at their garden date, he was more interested in picking out an arrangement of flowers for you that the poor girl put her feelings aside to help. All of us knew it and accepted it. No one was replacing you.” She sighed, looking around.
Wonwoo couldn’t believe everything she said but looking back, it became more clear.
“I didn’t know. I always assumed my feelings were one sided. And I know we can’t be together. He’s royalty and I’m not. She can provide his family with things that I can’t.” Wonwoo sighed, watching the fiancée show her ring off.
“But you can provide Mingyu one thing and that’s real love.” She put her glass down. “How long will you prevent yourself from being happy? From getting what you want?”
“I don’t know.” Wonwoo said truthfully.
“If you asked me, after everything, I think he’d leave this all behind to be with you. And that says a lot about someone who is next in line for that much power.” She turned walking away and leaving Wonwoo alone with his thoughts.
Wonwoo just didn’t want to believe it, no way Mingyu would give up something like this.
He watched Mingyu look around, making eye contact with him. He sent him a small smile and a nod.
Wonwoo returned it, looking away.
Maybe in another world, he would.
———
If there was one thing Wonwoo hated about Mingyu’s fiancée, it was that she was a bitch.
She was horrible to the staff around her, including Wonwoo who felt like he was going to snap at her any second.
But when Mingyu was around, she was as fake as could be. Playing the innocent role she did her best to portray.
And although Wonwoo would never speak poorly about someone he barely knew, he hated her so much.
Mingyu never batted an eye. Like he gave up fighting for everything he stood for before. Like all of this was worth some stupid palace.
Wonwoo found himself helping out with the wedding, only because the Queen and Mingyu had asked. The princess looked like she wanted to disagree, but she never said a thing.
Wonwoo overheard her one night, talking about all the staff she wanted to hire for their new palace. He heard Mingyu mention his name and how the princess sounded like she wanted to object, but Mingyu shut her down.
At least Mingyu had his back in someway.
Mingyu was gone today, promising to be back shortly after a quick meeting.
It somehow made things worse considering the wedding was in two days.
Wonwoo entered the room where the princess was directing (bossing) everyone around. He quietly approached her, the two flower arrangements in his hand.
He waited till she was done talking, watching her tell the servant that her choice in table cloths was not good enough.
She glanced Wonwoo’s way, frowning. “Those aren’t the flowers I asked for.” She crossed her arms over her chest.
Wonwoo looked at her confused. “You said pink roses in your papers.”
She shook her head. “I want pink tulips instead.”
Wonwoo sighed, nodding his head. Great.
“Okay, whatever you want.”
He turned to walk away, her voice stopping him. “What gives you the right to speak to me that way? I would watch your tone with me. You’ll soon be working for me and I’ll also be your future Queen.”
Wonwoo turned and looked at her. “Excuse me?”
“You heard me.” She spoke, walking towards him. The staff around them watched the two quietly. “And if you screw up my wedding day, you’ll be done for. Whether it’s by Mingyu or my father.”
Wonwoo bit his tongue, not wanting to argue. “I’m sorry, it was my mistake. Maybe I misread the paper.”
She rolled her eyes. “You are lucky, you know that? Mingyu keeps you around because he pity’s you for some reason unknown to me. You’re just like any of these other useless servants. In fact, if I had it my way, you’d be fire. And at some point, I’ll make sure it happens. You won’t be able to be around my Mingyu forever, like the sick pathetic love sick puppy you are.” She put her finger in his chest, pointing at him.
He’d had enough.
“Well you don’t have to worry about that then.” Wonwoo said sweetly.
She looked at him confused. “What do you mean?”
“You won’t have to worry about firing me because I quit.” He shoved the flower arrangements into her arms. “Good luck with your future as Queen.”
He turned and walked out, the staff gasping as the Princess shouted at him that’s he’d “regret this”.
He didn’t care.
He was over it.
He quickly made his way out of the palace, taking a deep breath. There was only one person he knew who to call.
———
Mingyu arrived back at the palace, making his way towards the common hall.
He could tell immediately that something was wrong.
He looked around noticing Wonwoo wasn’t here.
He saw his mom and dad and fiancée standing together, her parents there as well. The staff stood around silently.
“What happened?” Mingyu spoke confused.
The princess let out a (fake) sob once she saw him, throwing herself onto him. He steadied her in his arms, looking around.
“Y-Your servant Wonwoo was horrible to me, honey. I was trying to be nice to him just for you! But he threw flowers at me and called me horrible names. And then he just up and left.” She sobbed.
Mingyu frowned, that didn’t sound like his Wonwoo.
“What?” He looked at his parents who seemed to have already bought the story she was spewing.
“With this new information, we think it’s best to let Wonwoo go, dear. We can’t have him acting like that.” His mother spoke.
The princess nodded, looking up at him. “It was scary, I worried he’d hurt me.”
Yeah that wasn’t his Wonwoo.
He glanced around, looking towards one of the maids.
“You,” He pointed. “Were you here when it happened?”
The maid nodded, glancing at the princess in his arms.
He pushed the princess to the side, blocking the maid’s view. “Tell me what happened. Truthfully.”
The maid nodded. “The princess yelled at Mr. Jeon for messing up the flowers and accused him of speaking down to her. She then said she’d have him fire one way or another and called him worthless. So Mr. Jeon quit sir. He hasn’t been back since.” The maid spoke.
“W-What?! She’s lying Mingyu! You have to believe me!” The princess grabbed his arm, pleading.
Mingyu glared her way, looking around the hall. “Anyone else who heard this argument go that way, raise your hand now.”
A few of the staff raised their hand.
Mingyu nodded, turning to his parents.
“So money and power hungry of you father that you’d trust a pathetic little girl we’ve barely known over someone who’s been delicately loyal to me.” Mingyu stared his father in the eyes, the princess gasping next to him.
“Mingyu, don’t talk about your wife like that! It’s impolite!” He mother yelled, shocked at his words.
“Listen here son, you don’t speak about my daughter that way. Maybe your servant needed to be fired if he treats precious guest that way.” The princess’s father spoke, pointing a finger his way.
Mingyu glared. “That servant has a name and it’s Wonwoo and he’s someone I owe everything too.” He took a deep breath. “I’ve been so blindsided by the hopes of a new palace that I missed the important things that were right in front of me. The most important person by my side.”
He took the ring off his finger, shoving it into the princess’s hand. “I’m not marrying you. The wedding is off.”
The princess looked at him with wide eyes, real tears forming in her eyes as she ran over to her parents.
Mingyu turned, walking away.
Mingyu’s father stepped forward. “Mingyu! You know what this means if you leave! You know what this will cost you!” He yelled.
Mingyu glanced back. “I do and I don’t care. Do what you will. Take my title away. At least I can be with the one I truly love.”
Mingyu kept walking out as his father shouted at him, not looking back. He had somewhere he needed to be.
———
Wonwoo placed his packed bags near the front of the door, glancing out the window to make sure he wouldn’t miss the carriage that was sent for him.
He looked around, making sure he wasn’t missing anything when the door to his place opened.
He jumped, turning to see Mingyu standing there, looking out of breath.
“Mingyu.”
“Wonwoo, you’re still here.”
Wonwoo nodded, confused. “I am. Don’t you have a wedding to plan?”
Mingyu chuckled, shaking his head. “I called it off.”
Wonwoo’s eyes widen. “W-What? But what about your royalty status? Or your palace? You always wanted your own palace!”
Mingyu shrugged, walking close to him. “Royalty status doesn’t bother me. I’ll be fine without it as long as I have you.” Wonwoo’s heart started racing. “And as for the palace, it was by the sea and you don’t like the sea, right?”
Wonwoo nodded. “I don’t like the sea.”
“So why would I live in a place that you don’t like when your opinion matters the most to me.” Mingyu stood in front of him, reaching for Wonwoo’s hand, squeezing it.
“Mingyu.” Wonwoo looked up at him.
“Wonwoo, I am in love with you. I thought I could live the rest of my life with you by my side without having to worry about marrying someone else. But then all these stupid arrangements happened and it felt suffocating but I still had you by my side. And I thought maybe I could be selfish and keep you by my side while still getting my palace. I realized I was wrong.” Mingyu pulled him closer.
“I didn’t care about those princesses or the dates, I just cared about the moments I shared with you afterwards. And I want to continue sharing those moments with you, worried free.” Mingyu caressed Wonwoo’s face gently. “I’m sorry I hurt you by accepting the marriage and dragging you through this.”
Wonwoo smiled, shaking his head. “It’s okay. You’re giving up your royalty status for me, I think that’s an even trade.”
Mingyu smiled, nodding. “I would give up everything for you.”
“Are you sure about all of this?” Wonwoo bit his lip.
“Of course, I mean it.”
“Kiss me then…please.”
Mingyu nodded, leaned down and eagerly pressing his lips against Wonwoo’s.
Wonwoo sighed, gripping Mingyu’s shirt as he kissed him back. He’s been wanting to do that since forever ago.
They pulled apart, Mingyu looking at him with adoration. “I’ve been wanting to do that for so long.”
“Me too.” Wonwoo giggled.
“So what happens now?”
Wonwoo smiled. “Jihoon offered me a job so I was actually going over there. He sent a carriage to come fetch me. But I’m sure Soonyoung would offer you a job as well considering the circumstances.”
Mingyu nodded, “Sounds perfect to me.”
Wonwoo heard the footsteps of horses approaching outside. “I think they’re here. But what are you going to do about all your stuff at the palace?”
Mingyu shrugged, picking up Wonwoo’s bags with one hand, the other reaching out to grab Wonwoo’s hand.
“Doesn’t matter. As long as I’m with you, I don’t mind to start over with everything. You’ll help me right?”
Wonwoo grinned, pecking Mingyu’s lips one more time. “You know I will. I told you I’d be by your side forever.”
———
*a month later*
Wonwoo gently squeezed the icing, spelling out the letters on the cake he had made the night before.
“Won?” He heard a voice yell from their bedroom.
“Hold on! I’m coming! Stay put!” He finished the last letter, smiling wide.
He gently picked the cake up, walking towards the bedroom. “Okay, close your eyes.”
“They’re closed.”
”You promise?”
”Yes!”
Wonwoo walked in, a huge grin on his face. “Surprise!”
Mingyu opened his eyes, a smile spreading on his face as Wonwoo stood there with a cake.
“Happy birthday Mingyu!”
Mingyu reached out for Wonwoo, pulling him near the bed. “Hold on, you’ll make me drop it and I spent a lot of time on it!”
Wonwoo pouted, putting the cake on the side table. He looked at Mingyu who pulled him in for a hug, wrapping his arms tight around him.
“Thank you so much, baby.” Mingyu kissed his head gently.
Wonwoo grinned. “I figured since we both have the day off that we could go on a date?”
Mingyu nodded, intertwining their fingers together. “Sure, anywhere in particular?”
“It’s a surprise! I have it all planned out.” Wonwoo squeezed his hand.
“You are good at planning things.” Mingyu chuckled.
Wonwoo rolled his eyes, before frowning. “Oh no, I didn’t get a candle so you could make a wish.” He tried standing up, Mingyu pulling him back down.
“No need.” Mingyu shrugged, pulling him in for a kiss. “I have everything I could ever want, what more could I ask?”
Wonwoo smiled, kissing him gently.
“I love you.” Wonwoo whispered.
“I love you too.” Mingyu grinned.
