Shouwa Era, Japan, June 1983:
In the train ride back home, only Mom was here. Dad had an important business opportunity in Tokyo and he had to leave for it. He'll be fine for a month or two but whatever. Now me and my Mom had to spend time. But I'm 1X years old, I'm at that stage of life when it's awkward to talk to your parents, especially your Mom. But I'm fine with that. "Hey Keiichi, remember when you almost burned down the entire building when we took cooking classes? Hahahaha! That was terrible!" "That isn't funny, I got porridge thrown at me!" "Yeah, fair. But that was funny." "It was long ago... Don't remind me." "... It was last year." Oh. "Hmph!" "How about I teach you how to cook while we spend time together, okay? Maybe I'll take you to my book club! Maybe we can even talk about your love life!" "MOOOOOOM!!!" "TEE HEE! I CAN'T WAIT!" "NOOOO!!!!"
Not too long after, the train stopped. We got off the bullet train and walked towards a cab my Dad got for us to use before he left. We went in with our few luggage and drove in the mountains. After that, we could see the view of Hinamizawa. It felt ethereal simply seeing this. The entire village, right before my eyes. The homes, the fields, the shrine. It made me smile. We got out the cab and walked the rest of the way. It wasn't too far. Of course, since I was the man, I held all the luggage while my mother took pictures of the scenery. We finnally reached out home. It was 10 times bigger than most houses here, we were pretty rich and this village is quite rural so it makes sense. We unlocked it, I helped my Mom put away her luggage in her and my father's room, she'd unpack, I grabbed all my shit and threw it in my room. I collapsed in my futon. "God... I'm so happy to be here..."
