Peter felt worse than he ever had in his life.
No more Spider-Man. He couldn't be trusted with that responsibility anymore. No more Indy. He'd nearly killed her.
It's not like he could open up about any of it to his friends either. None of them knew he was Spider-Man and they'd surely loathe him if they did, given everything that had now happened.
"Peter, what's going on with you?" MJ asked one day at lunch. Harry snapped his attention away from whatever girl he was checking out to listen in because he'd also been wondering about that. Peter had always been the most reserved of the trio but, recently, it just felt like it got ten times more intense. He knew the man's girlfriend was in a coma, but come on.
"I'm alright" Peter replied, avoiding both of their gazes and suddenly becoming very interested in playing with his food. Harry and MJ exchanged a glance.
"Alright, man, the act isn't working" the blonde spoke up. Peter's eyes snapped to him. "We can clearly see that something is wrong. I mean, you're always weird, but you've just been so sad recently"
"I'm Spider-Man, okay? I'm Spider-Man and that's bad because Spider-Man fucked up, so I threw that part of my life away into the ocean because that would be easier than continuing to be Spider-Man, but now I feel empty inside because that was such a big part of my life even though I never told anyone about it and I can't even tell my girlfriend now because she's in the hospital, which is my fault, and-"
He didn't say any of that.
"I'm fine" he said. It was a lie. They all knew it was a lie. "I'm just a bit bummed about Indy, okay?"
"Yeah, that was messed up, what Spider-Man did to her" MJ said, and Peter knew she was just trying to be helpful and he knew that she didn't know how hard that hit him, so he just smiled weakly and nodded.
"Yeah... Right"
"Hey, how about the three of us have a movie night tonight?" Harry suggested. The other two looked over at him. "Just an idea"
"That would be great, Harry" MJ said. "What about it, Peter?"
"...Sure"
