Summary
There is poison staining James’s lips when he speaks. Perhaps Regulus has been swallowing that same poison every time they kissed, and now he wonders why he feels so sick.
“I can’t give you that,” James finally says, and Regulus can feel his heart splinter. The words are like shrapnel driving through his rib cage, the same ones he’d pried apart to give James his beating heart to guard like a treasure. But he’d dropped it. And Regulus doesn’t know if it will fit back in the place it’s supposed to go, because was that place not in James’s hands?
“So go,” Regulus whispers. He feels tears welling up in his eyes and he grits his teeth, blinking rapidly to dispel them. Pathetic. He can’t cry won’t cry and keep everything locked up and don’t let them see you like this and never tell anyone anything!
“Reg…” James is frowning but he makes no move to cross the space between them. It's a gaping chasm. “Don’t do this.”
Say no.
Say you don’t want to go.alternatively;
how do you get over someone who was never yours? who do you blame when you’ve broken your own heart?
