Work Text:
Medic stepped off the teleporter and straightened his glasses.
“Ah, now, where were we… oh-” He started to look around when he realized he wasn’t in the badlands anymore. Instead, he found himself in a small Japanese town, filled with trees and shrines and surrounded by mountains.
“This… is strange…” He turned and took in the fresh air of the countryside. It was very refreshing compared to the dusty, arid battlefield he just came from.
“Fascinating… It’s not where we’re supposed to be, though.” He said to his dove, Archimedes, who was hiding in his coat. He quickly broke the exit with a rock he found nearby, so none of his teammates would have to teleport here with him.
"…dagnabbit!”
Medic looked around again for a few seconds. “Sorry, Engineer!” Medic yelled back.
He scratched his head. ‘What are we going to do now?’ He thought, his hand moving to his chin. His gaze kept wandering until he caught sight of a nearby hospital. He rubbed his chin in thought.
“Oh, well, might as well walk in and help a few patients…”
‘...before they kick me out, of course.’
In that same hospital, a young cancer patient was nearing her death, while just downstairs, her doctor was enraged about why-
“-is this happening?! Why won’t her parents show up? Even when she’s at the brink of death?!” He yelled at the medical receptionist.
Sarina laid there in her hospital bed. She had a splitting headache and felt very fatigued. She tried her best to remain conscious by taking deep breaths, quietly waiting for someone to be there in her final moments.
‘Mother… where are you..?’ The thought kept running through her mind.
“Parents like that exist, you know?” Amamiya’s shoulders dropped as he listened to the receptionist… “You should… be by her side when the time comes…”
He thoughtfully nodded, trying to save his tears as he made his way upstairs.
…coincidentally, Medic had just walked through the entrance and hastily strolled by the front desk.
“Ah, hello!” He quickly waved to the receptionists..
They stared after him, dumbfounded, as he climbed to the second floor.
He was moving so quickly he bumped into Amamiya’s shoulder on his way down the hall, making him grunt in surprise.
“Excuse me!” Medic said as walked by him.
Amsamiya rubbed his shoulder and furrowed his brow as he watched the other doctor walk away. He caught up with him, since Sarina’s room was down the hall anyway. He caught up to him and grabbed his shoulder just outside his room.
Sarina tried to look outside, but she was too frail to even sit up.
“Doc…” She weakly cried out. She could barely hear something going on outside.
“I’m in a hurry here, but I’m sorry, who are you?” She heard Amamiya say to someone else, assuming that it was another staff member.
“Ah, you are fery mistaken.” She noticed the other person had a German accent. “I have been working here since…erm… yesterday!”
“I was here all night last night...” She could hear someone scratching their head and more quick footsteps in the hallway.
“Vell, maybe you should lock your doors…” The other doctor muttered. She had to strain to hear him say that.
“Hey, you rushed by us at the entrance!” It sounded like a nurse was there now. “I’ve… never seen you here before. Have you seen this man?”
“No…” Amamiya responded.
“Are you even a real doctor? With a real medical license?” The nurse asked.
“Aha…. do I need to have one in my possession right now?” The German doctor chuckled nervously. Sarina kept trying to sit up and see who was causing the doc so much trouble.
“Look,” Amamiya said with a firm tone. “I don’t have the time for this. I have a very important patient I need to visit-” She heard a few slight exclamations of pain and the pushing of furniture.
“Ah, wait! I think I have something that will change your mind!” The rustling of clothes could be heard.
“Wh-what is that?!”
“An invention of my own!” Sarina heard footsteps towards her room, her anxiety quickly spiking.
“Now, if I just show you how it works here-“ She shifted in her bed to the best of her ability and tried to hide under her blanket.
She peeked a little over the sheet to see Amamiya quickly step into the doorway.
“Oh, don’t be such a baby,” Amamiya was pushed out of the way and the other doctor slipped by him and into sight. Sarina got a good look at him, noticing all of the red accents on the clothes he was wearing and his strange backpack.
"Hallo, fräulein!” He said with a smile. She stared fearfully into his eyes before her gaze wandered down to the peculiar device he was holding… it almost looked dangerous…
“You’ll feel a little pr- …actually, you won’t feel anything at all,” He pointed it at her.
Sarina was scared for what little life she had left, but she couldn’t bring herself to move, becoming frozen in fear with her condition worsening by the minute.
However, before he could turn it on, Amamiya wildly charged at him, trying to stop him from using his device. Medic heard him, and nonchalantly stepped out of the way. He watched him crash into the wall and cleared his throat, quickly checking the hallway after he heard footsteps in the hall hurrying away from the room before he turned back to his new patient.
“...anyway, you won’t feel a thing.” Sarina closed her eyes and turned away in fearful anticipation, trembling weakly. Medic was about to turn it on, but he hesitated..
“Actually,” He turned to a dizzy Amamiya, who was just sitting up. “What is this young lady’s diagnosis? I need to know before I perform this.” Amamiya gave him an unbelieving look.
“That’s… confidential…” He said while he nursed his head.
“Confi-” Medic brought a hand to his face and laughed in disbelief. “Confidential… In my medical opinion,-”
‘YOUR PATIENT IS ABOUT TO DIIIIIIE! WE DON’T TIME FOR-’
“-ah…” He pushed what he wanted to say to the side for now and cleared his head. “I don’t think we have the time to keep what she has confidential, Herr Doktor. I’ll be able to help if you tell me what she has..” They both looked at her again. She was breathing rather heavily..
Amamiya looked to her with empathy and breathed out a heavy sigh.
“She has anaplastic astrocytoma.. You can see the scar just barely under her hat.” He said, causing Medic to slightly raise his eyebrows for a moment.. “But why did you need to-”
He lifted Sarina’s cap to see the scar from her surgeries. “Ah, I’m glad you stopped me before I knew what she had.” He raised his device again and flipped something underneath it.
“Now…” He quickly pointed it at Sarina’s head and turned it on before Amamiya tried to stop him again.
Sarina winced as she suddenly felt some kind of warmth touch against her head.
But.. She could also feel her headache and nausea clear up.. The tightness in her chest instantly loosened up as well. Her feelings of lethargy and drowsiness also went away… She opened her eyes in astonishment.
It felt… so freeing, having her terrible symptoms of her tumor instantly go away, even just for a short while… She shortly felt herself go limp, her eyes slightly fluttering closed..
Amamiya got to his feet. “Sari-!” Medic held him off with a finger.
“Ah!” Medic said as he flipped the same lever under the device and turned it on again, still pointing it at Sarina’s head.
Suddenly, she felt energy flow back into her. She opened her eyes again and turned back to look at Medic. She saw a red beam with cross-shaped particles within the stream connect to her forehead, shooting out from the device. She noticed he was smiling, and Amamiya was there on the ground, just now getting up, watching in awe.
She tried to push herself up, and to her surprise, her arms were strong enough again to support her. She then tried to get up from her bed to thank him, thinking that she could walk again, but she still fell over.. However, Amamiya rushed over in time and caught her.
“Ah, you are still going to need to re-learn how to walk again..” Medic smiled nervously. “But, this was a successful procedure nonetheless! You feel better, yes?” Amamiya helped her to her feet, her legs wobbling a little.
“You’ll regain your sense of balance as soon as you know it.” Medic patted her on the head, making her hat slip over her eyes. He turned his attention to Amamiya, quickly healing him as well.
Amamiya felt the pain from the bruise on his head fade immediately. He could only keep staring at the other doctor in disbelief.
“Sorry, Herr Doktor,” Medic chuckled as he scratched the back of his head. “I get mind-splitting headaches all the time.” Most of them come from Australian marksmen.
“How did you- what is-? That was anaplastic- That was a brain tumor! That was a brain tumor that needed chemo, surgery, and radiation just to stave off!” He looked at his device again. “What even is that?!”
Medic grinned and held his device from both of the handles from on the top and below the device, tilting it up and tapping his foot closer to the other, striking up a dramatic pose. Sarina and Amamiya could swear a bright light shined over him while an angelic choir accompanied his striking showing.
“ This… This is my Meisterwork. With my Medigun, I can take people to the peak of health in seconds! And beyon-!” He paused. “And just the peak of health. That’s it.”
You could even cure something that’s as difficult to treat as a brain tumor?” Amamiya asked him.
“Ah, yes! My teamma- er- co-workers and I thought we all had cancer and we all had a few days left to live.”
“You all had cancer?” Sarina asked him.
“That’s… that’s a long story..” Medic chuckled. “But, to prevent a big panic like that from happening again, I decided to make some modifications to my Medigun.
“How did you do that?” Sarina looked at him with wide eyes. “All of my treatment was so complicated and took so long!”
“Ah, one of my colleagues at work did have cancer. He smoked a lot, you see. He agreed to let me run some experi- tests… tests to help him cure his lungs while I would get some valuable data.”
Amamiya furrowed his brow. “...why… did you say it like that?”
Medic opened his mouth and nervously smiled, hesitating before he said anything as he reminisced on past events, keeping his mouth open.
…
‘Let go of-!’
‘Could you hold open your ribcage?’
‘AAAAGHHHH! AAAAGH! YOU- *ahem* -you got blood on my suit.’
…
“Agh, details aren’t important..” He laughed nervously.
“You can just… cure any cancer?” Amamiya asked. Medic nodded in response.
“Ja! I ran tests on my co-workers for other types of cancer as well!”
“I thought they didn’t have cancer…” Medic’s mouth fell open again, pulling the same dopey smile.
…
‘Doc? Doc?! What is that?! What are you putting in my head?!’
‘Hey..! What did you just flip- Wh- Stop! Don’t- don’t point that at my head-!”
“Oh, relax,” He remembered himself saying. “This might sting a bit though-”
‘Wha-?! AAAHHHHH-’
“Hmm… may want to work that part out of this beam… Looks like your tumor is gone though! How do you feel?”
‘...’
“Scout?”
…
He cleared his throat. “...a-again, details aren’t important.”
Amamiya huffed through his nose frustratedly. “So… What are you even doing here at this hospital? WIth this… ‘Medigun’ of yours….”
“I- ah, how do I explain this… I’m.. supposed to be elsewhere? But, while I’m here, I just decided to visit the hospital nearby and help.” He nodded. “And, well, you know-”
“You shouldn’t be here?” Medic sighed exasperatedly and closed his eyes.
“Yes… but-” Medic opened his eyes upon hearing the new voice. He looked back through the doorway.
“Ah.” The nurse was back with a few security guards. She stared at him with a stern gaze.
“..Looks like it’s time for me to take my leave,” He rushed to the only window in the room and wildly swung it open. He turned back to the two with a smile.
“Auf Wiedersehen." He gestured to them goodbye before turning back around and hopping out.
Everyone in the room gasped as they watched him fall. And they winced once they heard him hit the ground and groan in pain. They all just stood there in silence, except for the guards, who quickly left to chase after him.
“...Doc,” Sarina spoke up, breaking the silence. “Am I really… Am I really going to be alright?” Amamiya looked down at her again with a soft glint in his eyes, his mouth slightly open.
“Well, I–” He didn’t quite know what to say. He didn’t know what had happened exactly to her tumor either. “I think we’ll have to run some more tests to-
“Tests? What did that man do? What exactly happened here?” The nurse looked at both of them.
“Well, you- he-” He hesitated, not knowing how to explain what happened.
Sarina, who had been feeling much more lively, decided to explain for him.
“So, he had this cool gun, right?”
“Wh- gun?! ”
“Wait, no! Not like that…”
Medic found himself back in the badlands. He stepped outside and took out his Medigun.
“Alright, I’m-”
“YOU FAILED!”
“-back.” He looked around with a blank expression, quickly averting his gaze when he saw Spy angrily staring at him, wearing a charred balaclava.
“Where the HELL WERE YOU?” He barked at him.
“The, uh- the teleporter sent me elsewhere…” Medic tried to explain himself. “I had to cure someone’s brain cancer before I returned-”
Spy groaned and waved him off. “Agh, nevermind, I don’t want to hear this. I’ve already experienced it myself.” He shuddered, thinking about it again.
Sarina stayed a few more days in the hospital to complete her rehab and run a few more MRI scans.
“Mmm…” Sarina grumbled as her head was slowly pushed into the scanner. “These tests are gonna give me my cancer back…”
“This might be your last scan,” The radiologist said in a reassuring tone. “Just gotta get through this one..”
She was taken out of the scanner moments later with her results immediately showing up on the computer it was connected to.
“Now, let’s send this to your doctor and tell him you’re..”
“Completely cancer-free…” Amamiya said in astonishment. He could already tell that she was recovering when he examined her, but he didn’t think she would be completely healthy after that strange encounter with that other doctor…
Sarina didn’t know how to react when she heard that. She just sat there, breathing softly through her mouth. Eventually, she got up and stumbled her way over to him, giving him a hug, thanking him for being there with her.
She would finish her rehab in a few more weeks, and she embraced Amamiya for the last time when it was time for her discharge, crying into his coat as she did.
“Looks like it’s time…” Amamiya said, looking down at her with a bittersweet smile. “All we have to do is call your parents now.”
Amamiya slid in his chair towards his computer and found her mother’s contact in her file. He dialed the number and put the phone to his ear-
*beep beep*
He was immediately met with the tone. He tried again-
*beep beep*
…He tried one more time-
*beep beep*
“A-asking out t-that dial tone again, are you, Doc?” Sarina laughed, her voice breaking a little from crying.
“...I think she blocked the hospital’s number,” Amamiya said, dumbfounded.
“W-what?”
“Wait,” Amamiya pulled out his personal phone. “Let me-”
*beep beep*
“How did she block my personal phone? That- that doesn’t make any sense..!” He stressfully grabbed his hair with his hands.
“What are we going to do, Sarina?” He looked over at her, who seemed to be lost in her own thoughts.
‘She’s finally healthy, but her own parents won’t even get the chance to see her like this anymore! Did they just not want to receive the call that confirmed that she didn’t make it?’ Amamiya thought, his expression becoming pained. He pinched the bridge of his nose and closed his eyes…
His thoughts were broken up when he heard her laugh lightly.
'She's laughing in disbelief...'
Sarina…” He looked up, letting his arm drop to his side. Looking at her expression, he went from feeling empathetic to being very confused. She was staring at him with a smirk on her face, her eyes narrowed.
“Sarina, Why… why are you looking at me like that?”
Sarina turned towards the door when she heard it open, grinning as she did.
“Dooooooc, I’m sixteen now, so-”
“No.”
“I didn’t even finish! And why not?”
“Because I’ve thought it over,” Amamiya hung his jacket on his coat rack by the door. “And I’ve decided that I can’t.”
“...also the media would eat me alive.” He quickly added.
Sarina giggled and flipped her hair with her hand. “Is that the only thing stopping you?” Sarina teased.
Amamiya turned around and gave her a small glare, even though he knew she wasn't being serious. (At least, not anymore.)
He sighed. “No..”
She kept giggling in the background as Amamiya turned around, slightly smiling. He pulled out his phone and walked over to the couch Sarina was sitting on. He stopped right behind her as he saw something on his feed.
“Hey, remember that idol, Ai?”
Sarina whipped around.
“Huh? Yeah, of course I remember! How could I forget? Why, what’s going on with-“
She paused. “I-I mean, It’s- it’s not like I care that much about her anymore though. She’s a rival of mine now, so, I don’t really care about-
“She’s going on hiatus for a while.”
“WHAAAAAAAT?!”
“Oh,” Amamiya turned back to his phone. “And I thought you didn’t care.”
“But, why?! What’s going on with Ai?” Amamiya shrugged.
“Must be a personal thing. They didn’t say anything about why she’s taking a break in the report.” Sarina pouted.
“Aw…”
“I… guess I’ll tell you if anything else comes out.” Amamiya said.
Sarina sadly shook her head. “Nothing else is going to come out. They probably won’t release anything if it’s personal.”
“Oh,” Amamiya nodded. “Never mind then.”
…
“So, guess who I met at work today.” Amamiya tried to stop himself from smiling too much.
“Ha-ha, doc.” Sarina laughed sarcastically. He didn’t say anything, staring at her with the same slight smile he had, which was slowly breaking into a wider one.
“...are you serious?”
