Work Text:

“…and I believe that’s game, Mistress Rose!”

“Oh, think yourself quite clever, don’t ya, Frodo Baggins?” Rose asked, scanning over the cards as if she might find mistake. “Don’t think I didn’t catch you eyeing the card deck when I went to fetch the kettle.”

Frodo scoffed, a grin pulling at the corners, “If I’m not mistaken, I believe you are accusing me of dishonesty, Miss Cotton.”

Rosie sat back on her cushion, crossing her arms, “I’d like to see that pretty smile of yours after I clean house with ya!”

Frodo’s smile grew, “I believe one must be on a winning streak in order to ‘clean house’, don’t you agree?” Rosie bristled and Frodo laughed as she grabbed the card deck.

“Best two out of three, you sly Baggins!” Rosie said, shuffling the deck. As she began to deal out the cards, Sam walked into the parlor and sat next to Frodo with a deep sigh.

“All done for the day, Sam-dear?” Frodo asked, his eyes fixed onto the cards he was dealt.

“The rain made sure of it, make no mistake,” Sam said, kissing Frodo’s pale cheek. He looked at the card deck on the table, and his eyes widened.

“You’ve gone and started a game of Ol’ Gammer without your Sam?” He asked, trying his best to sound as if he was just met with the ultimate injustice.

Rosie giggled and patted the spot next to her, “Not too late to join this round, Sam. Pour yourself some tea and settle in first, we’ll wait for ya.”
