Chapter Text
If Dean knew about this, he would kill him. Sam’s older brother was always kill first and ask questions later, this he knew well. Monsters and other supernatural beings could never be anything but killers, and it was a hunter’s job to slay them before they could kill innocent people.
But you weren’t like that.
You were a shapeshifter, one of the few that didn’t lure the Winchesters in because you were causing trouble. Meeting Sam was an accident. You were trying to live a normal life, getting groceries for you. However, the hunter was there as well going shopping for his brother’s bidding. He caught sight of your eyes on the security camera
You were just lucky that you crossed this Winchester.
Sam was quick to have you cornered, but there was something about his demeanor that told you that you weren’t in immediate danger. Unlike most hunters, he didn’t pull out the silver.
He talked to you.
It seems Sam wasn’t as bloodthirsty as other hunters you’ve heard of. In all your years, you’ve actually grown close to someone. It seems Sam has grown close to you to, if his frequent visits and conversations told you anything. However, while you two grew closer, there was one thing that would become a problem.
Dean Winchester.
“I’m telling you Sam, if you have to hide me from your own family then what kind of relationship could we ever have?” You told him when he snuck into your home one night.
“Y/N, Dean wouldn’t know. You’re a shifter, you don’t have to kill or consume others. You can just be, well, you.” He gestured to your current form, that of a young woman with ginger hair, with a proud grin like a schoolboy who aced his test.
You just slowly frowned and shook your head while crossing your arms.
“Sam, no offense, but you don’t know much about shifters.” You said while walking over to the window, peeking out slightly. Sam’s smile twitched slightly, waiting for you to explain.
“We have to shed our skins once in a while or else they start to decay. This skin can’t stay in peak condition forever…Dean would find out eventually and kill me without question.” You told him while lightly stroking your arm. The hunter frowned and shuffled his feet, hating that you were right.
“I wouldn’t let him do that.” Sam said after a while, and you just shook your head with a small, forced smile.
“No matter what happens Sam, you could never choose anyone, even me, over your own brother.” You said while walking up to him, and Sam had no response for that.
“Another thing…” You said after a while, a frown adorning your face as you moved back towards the window. Sam felt his heart thump violently in his ribcage. What could possibly be wrong now?
“I am a monster. A shapeshifter. I can be anyone be it man, woman, you name it. I have no true face…I could never give you the life you dream of Sam.” You told him, holding onto the collar of your shirt.
Sam opened his mouth to say something, but you shook your head, knowing he was going to try and refute that. You couldn’t turn to look him, so you continued to stare out into the darkness.
“You deserve so much more than what I can provide you.” You finally said, noticing the flicker of headlights in the darkness. It was no secret as to who it was. Sam liked to believe he was sneaky, but he was still a younger brother.
“Y/N, please-” Sam tried to talk, walking towards you, but you pushed him back.
“You have to go Sam, or Dean might kill us both.” You told him, shoving him towards the door. However, the hunter managed to grab you by the shoulders so he could look you in the eye. You knew this was hard for him after losing so many important people in his life, but it was for the best.
Even as a hunter, he deserved someone who could support his job as well as be a part of his family.
That couldn’t be you.
“Will I ever see you again?” He asked, almost pleaded, as he looked at you with that kicked puppy stare.
“All I can say is…thank you, Sam Winchester.” You avoided his question and urged him to confront his brother. With one last look at you, he managed to get outside just as Dean was getting out of the Impala.
“Dude, I’ve been looking everywhere for you.” Dean said like an overprotective parent. Sam merely shrugged, but was grateful that Dean didn’t seem to know about you.
“I’ve just…was with a girl.” Sam finally said, knowing that it wasn’t a complete lie. Thankfully, a huge grin grew on Dean’s face as he clapped his younger brother on the back.
“I knew you had it in you Sammy!” Dean praised him as Sam forced a smile. Then they both walked back to the car and the smile vanished from Sam’s face. As they drove away, he just stared out the window, catching Dean’s attention.
“Was the goodbye hard or something?” Dean teased a bit, but it didn’t make Sam smile.
“A little bit.” Sam admitted and Dean frowned, not liking the way his brother was acting. Soon, a serious loom grew over Dean as he faced the road again.
“Well, get your head in the game. I got a job for us.” Dean said while gripping the steering wheel. This caused Sam to perk up slightly.
“What is it?” Sam asked, hoping for something to get his mind off you.
“A shifter.”
