Work Text:

Fearne tried to tiptoe quietly back into the space where the rest of Bell’s Hells was sleeping, mindful of the noise her hooves made on the wood of the ship. She paused, shivering. It was hard to ignore that feeling of cold that had washed over her when she shared her warmth with the captain. She couldn't shake it, the odd feeling like she'd lost something that she hadn't even know she'd had.

“Whatever you got, I want half,” came a voice from the dark, stirring her from her thoughts.

“I was just…looking around” Fearne replied.

“In the captain’s quarters?” Ashton asked. She could practically hear the raised eyebrow and skeptical expression on his face.

“There was a big chest in there,” she said thoughtfully. “I tried, but I couldn’t get the sword back.”

“Couldn’t sleep?” she asked, settling herself down next to where the genasi was sitting upright against the wall of the cabin.

“Turns out cold, wet, haunted, rocking pirate ship is bad for all this,” Ashton said, closing their eyes, gesturing to the gold filled cracks of their body.

Fearne pulled the layers of her dress closer to herself, for all the good that it did.

“I could help” she said after a moment. “Maybe warm you up a little”.

“I don't want to wear you out.”

“It's not a problem, really. I'll get some rest soon. Can I?” She stretched out her hand to Ashton's arm as they moved slightly closer to her. She let some of her internal fire flow through her, and for a moment she did feel better. She studied Ashton's face, and noticed a slight softening of his shoulders. She pressed a little closer to them.

“Better?”

“Yeah, thank you,” Ashton said softly.

The weird feeling was back, as soon as the magic faded.

“I think I did something…bad I guess. Maybe not bad exactly but…” she trailed off, remembering what she’d said to the party earlier, about guilt and consequences.

Ashton didn't say anything, so she continued. “The captain, I think he took like, my warmth or something. I feel funny.” She sighed.

“So why'd you give it to me?” The question came after a moment, Ashton's voice whisper soft in the dark next to her.

“Because you didn't ask. And I wanted to do something nice to help you.”

She felt Ashton move next to her, and heard rustling as they pulled their jacket off, tucking around her.

“Let’s get some rest,” he said. Fearne moved a little closer, grateful that they didn't pull away. His head rested on her shoulder and even with her eyes closed she could see the soft flash of lights sparking from his head. She felt herself start to drift off to sleep, feeling just a little warmer.
