Summary
There once was a time where China was considered the center of the world, the epitome of development in all ways--be it art, religion, or economics. In order to be privy to the rich knowledge that the Middle Kingdom held, one had to complete a few easy steps: Make the long journey from their homeland to the capitol with gifts, kowtow before the emperor, and announce their subordination in the tributary system.
Honda Kiku, a young student on the next Kentoshi mission to the Tang is dreading his position, but not for the reasons above. All decisions in his life have been made for him--down to the meals that he ate. So when Kiku is summoned to study government under the wing of the haughty Crown Prince Yao, he is less than enthused to have yet another thing beyond his control. The Prince, however mighty he may seem, leaves much to be desired in his royal duties. Tired and overworked, Yao dreads being in his position as much as Kiku does.
Two men, from two different worlds, so different yet so undeniably the same. Will a friendship, let alone love, be able to blossom amidst prying court officials, the demands of palace life, and the shadow of a new emperor?
