Summary
As you steadily grow closer, what you're looking at is a mermaid. Delicate looking yellow fins frame their face like flower petals, draping over each other while they're out of the water, and deep red gills fluttering against their sunny yellow skin.
A beautiful orange tail that glitters in the afternoon sun curves out beside them, tailfin flipping absently against the rock they're laying against. A bright patch of scarlet is painted over their otherwise purely orange scales, dripped across the middle of their tail and twisted around the side where you can't see. From here you don't see any pooling beneath them, but it's still so bright the blood must be fresh.
Hastily you drop anchor right where you are, close enough to see the whites or the mermaid's wide, blue eyes as they watch you approach. Not afraid of humans, even when you're arriving on a ship headed straight towards them.
