We're Both Petty But That's Romance I Guess

Summary:

Valentina is a regular ol Regina George (I've never watched Mean Girls) when it comes to unicorn riders. She knows 2 things. 1. She's a Furi and she makes sure everyone knows it and 2? She hates Sophia. Simple enough. So why is she suddenly aggravatingly smitten for her arch-nemesis?

Notes:

I am in my obsessive brainrot for this fandom. I literally have no idea what I'm doing, we'll see where this goes.

Chapter 1: I think I’ve fallen for you (and that’s completely ok)

Chapter Text

Valentina is a Furi.

Her legacy is unmatched when it comes to her bloodline, and subsequent ties to the prestigious Unicorn Academy.

Well, despite what the riffraff Sophia would say about her “hero” father.

“Ugh,” Valentina scoffs to herself. “She isn’t special,” she mutters under her breath.

“Though she has nice hair, and jeans, and earrings, and style…” she murmurs, daydreaming, her mind lost for a moment.

She shakes her head. “What am I thinking? Sophia’s...not…pretty.”

But then she starts to daydream of her hair and her nails, and she starts blushing.

“Damn it, why is she so hot?” Val curses mentally.

She looks down at her paper and sees that she started subconsciously drawing a sketch of Soph on her unicorn care paper assignment. She furiously starts rubbing it away with an eraser, blowing the hair off her face.

Just then, Sophia walks over.

“Shit!” her mind screams. Her palms get sweaty.

“Hey Valentina,” Sophia gives her usual flat greeting. Yet it seems tinged with a bit more happiness than usual. There’s a faint glee hidden within that usual indifferent smile of hers. She dismisses it.

Valentina forces herself to act apathetic.

“Hey loser,” Valentina greets back flatly, trying to look at anywhere but Soph’s eyes or her paper.

Instead of taking the jab to heart, Sophia instead just laughs.

Ok...weird.

Why is she acting so out of character?

Did she and Ava have a girlfriend break up again? (She may be hopelessly crushing over the girl of her dreams, but she knows those two absolutely adored each other at one point. Probably still do to some degree. Well, until their cat fight later.)

“Whatcha doing?” She asks instead, leaning over her shoulder.

Valentina goes beet red.

“Nothing!” She says, placing her hand on the paper where the drawing used to be.

It’s only a splotch of smudge marks, but the desecration is still visible enough that if Sophia saw it, she’d know exactly who it was.

She couldn’t let that happen.

Yet, Sophia still looked over.

She gives her usual irritating smirk until her eyes land on the remains of the drawing.

“Did you…draw this?” She asks, her voice containing a hint of curiosity.

Valentina freezes.

Sophia looks at it. “It’s…beautiful.”

Wait what?

Valentina stammers. “You…like it?”

Sophia giggles . “I do.”

Val looks back at it. It’s very obvious. Hearts doodled all over a sketch of Soph.

“Uh….” Valentina doesn’t know how to explain.

Sophia smirks. “Don’t worry, I know what you want.”

Valentina blanches. Her face turns beetroot red.

Sophia gives her a friendly punch to the shoulder. “Meet me at the stables in 10.”

“Uh…ok,” Valentina says, for once following someone else’s orders.

Still blushing, Valentina ignores the crowd of people staring at this new development and walks to the stables. She turned around, her voice choked, shouting, “Nothing to see here!”

She dashes out of the room. She walks quickly to the stables. Her mind is racing. ‘ Oh god, does she really like me?’ is all her mind is thinking.

It’s winter. And the entire academy grounds are lightly dusted with snow. Valentina shivers. She’s wearing a coat but the cold still seeps through under her puffy winter coat.

She walks into the stables. She’s very grateful for the heating, melting in satisfaction when she enters the enclosure and closes the doors, met with a wave of warmth.

She’s met with an uncharacteristically sheepish Sophia holding a coffee, sporting a red scarf and a purple jacket.

Sophia grins when she notices Valentina.

“Hey, Val!” She chirps, walking over.

“Val? Wow, I didn’t think I’d get a nickname,” she thinks to herself.

Valentina clears her throat. “Hey, Soph.”

She decides to give her own nickname.

Sophia grins. “Soph huh?”

Her smirk is so irritatingly irresistible Valentina wants nothing more than to wipe it off her face.

And yet she wants to be able to make Sophia make that face a thousand more times again.

Valentina coughs awkwardly. “So why did you want me to come here?”

“I wanted to give you this,” Sophia hands Valentina a scarf.

“Why?” She asks, receiving it.

“Because red brings out your eyes,” Sophia says, her eyes softer than usual, her voice dipped in honey.

Valentina is taken aback.

She staggers back a bit in surprise, “Um…thank you?”

She blushes.

Sophia blushes back.

Valentina sits next to Sophia on a bench near Wildstar’s stable.

She plays with her fingers.

“Did you tell me to come just for the scarf or…?” She gestures with her hands.

Sophia laughs and shakes her head. “Not just for that.”

“Then what else?” Valentina asks, tilting her head.

Sophia laughs. She leans in and whispers in her ear. “I like you too.”

Valentina’s heart almost stops.

“What?” She isn’t sure she heard correctly.

Sophia takes a sip of her coffee, smiling smugly. “I know you have a crush on me.”

“I do not!” Valentina tries to defend herself, but fails miserably.

“Uh huh,” Sophia raises an eyebrow and gives her a flat look.

“Heh,” Valentina rubs her neck sheepishly. “Maybe I do.”

Sophia leans in. “Well I do too. What are you gonna do about it?”

“What am I gonna do?” Valentina repeats.

“This!” She exclaims, tackling Sophia to the floor.

“Woah!” Sophia says, taken off guard. Wildstar grabs her empty coffee cup as she tumbled.

Sophia laughs, “Thanks girl!”

They roll around on the floor, out of breath.

Valentina leans in and kisses Sophia’s cheek, blushing. “I like your hair,” her heart flutters.

She clears her throat. “Don’t go thinking this means anything,” her voice is wobbly.

Sophia just smirks, wrapping her arm around Val’s, staring outside the window as snow gently falls. “Oh, don’t worry. I know.”

Chapter 2: Sweeter than Fiction

Summary:

I really wanted to indulge in my romantic winter guilty pleasure. My lips are zipped, I am not going to spoil what I did in this chapter hehe.

Context from where we start:

-It’s cold. It’s winter. Valentina is still stunned. Her girlfriend sure is something alright. She stares at the sky, seemingly grinning at something. Memories commence…-

Notes:

Yes I made a Taylor Swift song reference (despite having only heard the song once). I don’t think it gets any more Swiftie than that.

Anything I mention about other MC are not insults, FYI, I am just talking about how Soph would see them in her own perspective.

(See the end of the chapter for more notes.)

Chapter Text

It had been a few days since Valentina and Sophia had revealed their crushes on one another.

A lot had transpired since.

But instead of giving a boring exposition-riddled recap, let me just flashback to Tuesday night.

A few days after that fateful night…

Valentina was constantly surprised by her girlfriend.

At first, when she met Sophia, the girl seemed annoyingly stubborn.

Not as cheery as Ava, but not as sarcastic as her.

Yet there was something about her that she relished in.

Her aura was a lot more similar to hers than she would’ve expected.

Her flat humor, her oftentimes pessimistic, downright borderline cynical attitude.

She could outright rival Valentina in terms of fury when someone scorned her.

And that scared her.

But part of that fire was why she was so drawn to her.

Cinder was her fire unicorn, and it seemed the Fate Fairies had given her a fiery soulmate to match.

Not that she was complaining.

She quite enjoyed it.

She let out a content sigh as she reminisced, her breath misting over her face from how cold it was outside.

2 days before, Tuesday night:

Sophia had a surprise planned.

Of course she did.

She always did.

It was one thing Ava was constantly annoyed by.

Well, it wasn’t her fault really.

She was just too reckless.

Part of the reason they broke up.

I mean they never were really together, Ava was just very clingy and it was very emotionally conflicting for Sophia. She had never been a very “touchy-feely” person. She was more detached because she had trouble trusting people after her dad died. Because the closer she got, the harder she’d hurt when they inevitably left. She expected them to leave…

But Valentina was different.

Valentina never pried.

Sure, she may jab and mildly insult you, but she’d never really mean it. It was her love language. She always knew when to stop.

She wasn’t like Ava or Rory in that she knew her limits. She couldn’t fault Ava too much, she cared to a fault. Rory got carried away with his pranks a little too much, but laughter was the best medicine in his eyes.

Isabela and Layla were kind of neutral. They both cared, but they were similar to Val in that they would leave you alone. They trusted you to sort it out. But they would always be there if you needed them. And vice-versa.

Valentina was the best of both worlds.

Shocker right?

If you asked Sophia on the first day of school what she thought of Valentina, Sophia would tell you she was a jerk.

Which, well, fair.

For a first impression.

But Valentina was a very different person under the surface.

You just had to get to know her.

She played her cards close to her chest.

Just like Sophia.

She liked that about her.

Sometimes that knowing quiet between them was heaven.

Sometimes it was like a silent storm, brewing, waiting to erupt.

But she wouldn’t have it any other way.

They were perfect for each other.

Sophia pulled herself out of her reminiscing.

She had to get ready.

Sneaking into her room, tip-toeing past Ava, who was asleep, Sophia reached for her outfit in her closet.

It was her usual garb, her silver jacket, pinkish-purple shirt, and purple pants. She slipped on her leather, fingerless gloves, and pulled out another thing from the closet.

It was a bag.

But it wasn’t empty.

She had a little something for Valentina in there.

Layla had reorganized Val’s closet again , and she couldn’t find her favorite jacket, so she got something for her. And to make up for all the times she annoyed Val with her loud guitar playing back when they were enemies. Oops.

Having finished getting ready, Sophia slips out of the room.

It’s dark outside.

She told Valentina to meet her by the stables again.

Just like that night.

The moon is at its zenith, a silver crescent submerged in the blanket of navy blue dotted with twinkling stars.

She walks up to Valentina, her boots crunching on the snow beneath her feet, bag hidden behind her back.

Val was in front of the stable gates, shivering, without a coat.

“Val!” Sophia shouts worriedly, breaking into a run over to her. “What are you doing in the dead of a cold winter night without a coat?!”

Val’s teeth chatter, “Well, Sophia, you know Layla hid my favorite coat,” she huffs.

“It isn’t your only coat!” Sophia argues back. She’s not angry, just concerned.

“I was supposed to give you this later, but it looks like you need it now. I know Layla reorganized your closet, and I wanted to give you a gift to make up for all the late-night guitar playing, heh,” Sofia says.

“So here,” she thrusts the bag over to Val.

Valentina’s normally cold eyes soften at the gesture. “You didn’t have to…you get me so much. I need to give you something back.”

“Pssh,” Sofia brushes it off. “Take it.”

“Okay,” Val sheepishly accepts it.

She looks inside and sees it’s a brand new leather jacket.

“Really? You shouldn’t have, dear!” She blushes.

She still accepts it.

She takes it out of the bag and slips it on.

Sophia has a goofy smile on her face.

“You look really nice….” She smiles, Val’s heart melting from cuteness.

Sophia loops her arm with Val’s. “Shall we?” She smirks.

Val accepts the gesture. She grins back. “We shall.”

They start walking away from the stables.

This isn’t their first nightly escapade, but it’s become a fond pastime of theirs.

They walk slowly towards the safe portion of the forest, not near the Shimmerstone Wall to Sophia’s dismay.

Valentina is wearing her red scarf, despite having not worn a jacket until Soph gave her the new one.

She never goes anywhere without it.

“It’ll probably be summer and you’ll still be wearing that thick wooly scarf!” Sophia laughs, her arm around Val’s shoulder.

Val blushes. “I wear it because you gave it to me.”

Sofia grins back. “Aww the sassy Valentina is all sappy for me, who knew?” She teases, that insufferable trademark smirk on her face.

“Shut up,” Valentina blushes, but there’s no malice behind the words. She slaps Sophia’s arm lightly.

“Hey!” She cries out, laughing. “It didn’t even hurt.”

“I wasn’t trying to hurt you, you himbo ,” she remarks back, her cheeks pink, smirking.

“Oh I’m the himbo?” She asks, raising her eyebrow.

“Yeah…” she sputters, pouting.

“Your pout is so cute,” Sophia boops her nose.

Valentina’s face turns cherry pink.

“It isn’t,” she tries to deny it.

“Aww you’re so cute,” she talks in a tone you use to talk to a dog.

“I am not!” She denies it again.

“You are~” She takes pleasure in teasing Val.

“Ugh, you’re insufferable,” Val sighs, shaking her head.

“And I enjoy being so,” Sophia smiles smugly.

“Oh stop it,” Val pushes her lightly.

Sophia stumbles. “Hey!” She yells.

Valentina bursts into laughter. “You’re so clumsy!” She laughs, wiping away a tear.

“Am not!” Sophia rebuts, on the floor, pouting grumpily.

“You so are,” she laughs.

“Come on,” she holds her hand out, pulling Sophia up.

Sophia huffs.

Before she could open her mouth for some other remark, Sophia wraps half of her scarf around Val when she sees she’s still cold.

“You’re lucky I love you,” she mutters under her breath, blushing as she ties it around Val’s neck.

“I really am,” Val’s eyes shine.

“We’re sharing scarfs,” Val giggles uncharacteristically.

“We are,” Sophia laughs back.

In a content silence, they continue their walk into the forest, Sophia’s arm draped over Valentina’s shoulder, both of them with a red scarf wrapped around their neck.

Someone speaking breaks Valentina out of her trip down memory lane.

She looks over. It’s Sophia. Wearing a winter coat and a red scarf.

‘Red scarf huh?’ Val thinks to herself. She chuckles. ‘You really are something dear.’

“Hey loser,” Sophia greets Valentina, giving her a friendly punch, parroting her own words.

“Hey Soph,” Val replies back, not even minding that Sophia called her a loser, let alone registering the punch.

”What, no witty remark? What’s got you so preoccupied that your levels of sass are all dialed down?” She snickers.

”Nah. I was just thinking.” Valentina responds.

”About what?” Sophia inquires, seemingly amused.

”About you,” Val turns her head and looks into her eyes.

Sophia blushes. She wraps her arm around her neck, a favorite thing of hers to do. “I was just doing the same thing.”

She kisses her cheek.

”You like that?” She cheekily grins.

Valentina thinks for a moment before she responds.

Her lovable, most definitely irritatingly adorable Sophia.

The one she was oh so heads-over-heels for, the one who had made her laugh and blush a thousand times despite only being girlfriends for what seemed like a few short days.

Her soft brown eyes, her starry aesthetic, the purple and the leather. The water to her fire.

She looks up at the sky and then back at Sophia.

”Yeah. I think I like that very much.”

Notes:

I still love this couple no way I’m not writing more, may try out Isa/Val and Soph/Ava at some pt
