A Very Serious Conversation

Summary:

Yakko and Max have an extremely important conversation about their relationship.

Work Text:

Yakko leaned his head on Max’s shoulder, the two sitting together in the soft lights of nighttime Burbank. The top of the water tower was windy, but they’d gotten used to it a long time ago. Decades ago, in Yakko’s case.

The WB toon let out a shaky breath.

“Something wrong, Yak?” Max asked, concern showing on his face. Yakko straightened his neck.

“I’ve just been thinking.” Yakko replied, clearly nervous about something.

Max put an arm around his back, rubbing gently in an attempt to comfort his boyfriend. “Hey, whatever it is, you know you can talk to me about it.”

“I know. And thanks. It’s just… I’ve been thinking about what they say about us.”

“Huh? What do they say about us?”

“You know, with us being two boys dating, they say a lot of things. They say… well, Max…” Yakko sighed, hanging his head. It was hard for him to get the words out.

“What is it?” Max asked, now just as worried as Yakko seemed to be.

Yakko shuddered, looked away, then finally looked his boyfriend in the eyes.

“Maxxie, are they right? Do you really think we’re gay?”

Max pulled back a bit, confused. Yakko’s eyes were big and vulnerable. There was none of the usual sarcasm or snark he had come to expect from him. The question seemed to be completely genuine.

“Uh… trust me, Yakko, you don’t have anything to worry about.”

“Oh, thank goodness.” Yakko let out a long breath, seeming very relieved. Smiling, he leaned forward, nuzzled Max’s nose, and gave him a smooch. “I love you, Maxxie.”

“I love you too, Yak.” Max chuckled. “There’s really no one else like you.”
