Work Header

oh, you make me complete

Summary:

he hadn’t yet told the national team that he was heading back to brazil after the olympics were over, and he didn’t know how to go about it. ( just like he didn’t know how to go about telling them that he was in a very serious and committed relationship with one of the most annoying men alive. )

he could hear tooru’s annoyance at the description in the back of his mind, but more so, he could feel the pride that he knew the setter got from successfully pushing people’s buttons and figuring out what makes them tick.

oh, how he loved this man.

Notes:

Work Text:

Following Argentina's win at the Olympics, Shoyo was insanely worried about his teammates’ reactions to his complicated relationship with Tooru. It was never a secret, per se, but he wasn’t open about his connection with the setter beyond talking about their initial meeting in Brazil. It’d been too hard to talk about; how was he supposed to explain that he was kinda sorta dating the Oikawa Tooru?

It started as a fling, as a convenient way to let off steam and stave off his homesickness in one fell swoop. It started with stolen kisses in a night club and shared margaritas on the beach after a game. It started with Tooru’s deep brown eyes becoming a home on the other side of the globe, offering a comfort that Shoyo knew he wouldn’t be able to find anywhere else. It started with the Grand King muttering “Is this real life?” and changing Hinata's world forever. But was that reason enough for the people he’d grown with over the years —the friends and comradely rivals he’d made along the way. What would Kageyama , for example, have to say?

The ginger shuddered at the thought, trying not to let his nerves get the best of him. He couldn’t get nervous now, not after days of sneaking down to Tooru’s hotel room and cuddling with him until the morning light peeked in through the curtains. And it wasn’t like Shoyo was really scared of his teammates’ thoughts about his relationship; he knew that they’d support it if it meant that he was happy. But his boyfriend had a way of grating on people’s nerves, especially the nerves of those he faced across the net in high school.

So really, Hinata thought as he carefully crept down the hall toward the elevators. I couldn’t blame them for taking it a little hard.

“Took you long enough, Chibi-chan.” Oikawa’s voice startled him from his thoughts, concern seeping into his words like honey. To anyone other than the setter’s Seijoh teammates, he probably sounded as cocky as ever. But Shoyo knew better.

“I thought you were going to wait for me in your room?” he questioned, pouting up at the brunette as he surged forward to take his hand and lace their fingers together.

“I was.” the taller man replied, before smirking as he swirled a set of keys around the index finger of his free hand. “But then I thought we could have a little bit of fun.”

“I’m concerned.” Hinata deadpanned, barely managing to fight back a laugh when his boyfriend jabbed his fingers into his ribs. “Hey! You remember what happened last time you had a ‘fun’ idea! Iwa-chan’s hair was blonde for like a month!”

“It’s not my fault that he didn’t read my text message saying not to use the guest shampoo.” Tooru replied with a noncommittal wave of his hand. “He should have known I wanted to prank Makki anyway.”

“You are a menace.” the younger male said with a sigh, affection bleeding into his tone despite his best efforts.

“And yet, you still love me.”

“And yet.” Hinata agreed, before poking Oikawa’s stomach. “What’d you have planned?”

The brunette dropped his hand in favor of pushing the elevator button, grinning brightly as he held the keys up once more.

“As it turns out, being an Olympic gold medalist comes with some sweet perks.” he said proudly, swirling the keys again. ( Shoyo knew that this dumbass, his dumbass, just wanted to hear the jingle of the metal clinking together. His heart swelled with affection at that. )

“Such as?” he asked in response as stepped onto the elevator, grateful that it was empty. When the doors clicked shut, Tooru’s lips were pressing all over his face, earning laughter that he couldn’t stifle. “Hey! Toto, stop it!”

“I can’t heeeelp it!” he replied, stretching out the vowel in between the onslaught of kisses. “I don’t get to kiss you whenever I want to when we’re here.”

“I—Well. Just hit the damn button.” His cheeks were almost as red as his hair, the blush burning his skin. “Where are we going, anyway?”

Oikawa pouted, but obliged his boyfriend and hit the up button before taking his hand again. Reflexively, Hinata’s grip tightened as the elevator started to move.

“So I sweet-talked the receptionist to give me the keys to one of the pools.” the setter said with an all-too familiar look in his eye, and butterflies erupted in the younger man’s stomach at the sight. “For a little bit of fun… after hours.”

“I—Um, I don’t have my swimsuit.” Shoyo stammered, already having a feeling about where this was going to go.

“Me neither.” was his boyfriend’s gleeful response, and his suspicions were confirmed.

“We’re gonna go—” he started to say at full volume, but then the doors opened and a couple of athletes stepped onto the elevator, animatedly speaking in a language he was unfamiliar with. He sucked in a nervous breath and yanked Oikawa closer by the hand, leaning up to whisper-yell into his ear.

“We’re gonna go skinny dipping in public ?”

“Sounds fun, doesn’t it?” is the hushed answer.

“Yeah, if you’re on a secluded beach in Brazil!”

“Shut up, you’ll love it.” Tooru said at a normal volume, smiling at the shorter man in a way that made his insides melt.

“I cannot stand you.” Shoyo whined as the elevator stopped once more, before he’s pulled along down the hallway by the brunette. He waved at athletes he recognized on the way to the pool, briefly worrying that there would be people still swimming despite the fact that hotel amenities were closed for the night. It would be an early morning for many of them, but that never really stopped the likes of Bokuto and Atsumu, so it wouldn’t surprise him if there were others like them.

Fortunately, when Tooru slid the key into the lock and opened the door, the lights were off and the room was vacant.

“Aren’t there cameras in here?” the ginger asked as he blindly reached for the light switch. Oikawa’s hand swatted his own away, earning a whine in response.

“Yes, which is why we’re gonna rely on the lights from the pool. It’s a sexy atmosphere.”

“I think you’ve been spending too much time with Mateo, haven’t you?”

“You leave my outside hitter out of this!”

“So that’s a yes?” Hinata asked with a laugh, finally giving in and taking off his shirt.

In lieu of answering, Oikawa merely finishes stripping before jumping into the water with a rippling splash!

“Hey, wait for me!” he said with another laugh, joy bubbling out of his chest like a soda bottle that’s been shaken too hard. He kicked off his pajama pants before following suit, the water cold against his skin. He resurfaced with a gasp, shivering for a moment as his body adjusted to the temperature. “You’re insane.”

“But you love it.” the brunette replied, swimming over and launching himself onto his boyfriend. Shoyo giggled as he bobbed in the water under Tooru’s weight, squealing when he started splashing.

He knew that the two of them would never have a dull moment, because chaos seemed to follow them wherever they went. Whether it was an impromptu beach volleyball tournament where they get their asses handed to them, or a spontaneous drinking competition in a popular bar in Rio, or skinny dipping in a hotel pool after hours—Shoyo was always going to have the time of his life with Tooru around. And he wouldn’t have it any other way.

So when the setter started splashing him and tossing his head back to cackle out a squeakier and happier version of the laugh that made the younger man’s heart ache with affection, he could only join in on the fun.

Hinata didn’t know how long the two of them spent in the water, but eventually he got too cold to continue swimming, so Oikawa relented and helped pull him out of the pool. His legs were finally starting to ache from their match earlier, so the assistance was appreciated. Getting dressed again was slightly harder than throwing their clothes around without a care in the world, but eventually they managed. Somehow, the two of them had swapped shirts, but strangely, he really didn’t mind wearing a jersey sporting one of his rival teams.

“That was a blast.” Shoyo admitted, as his boyfriend locked the doors and shoved the keys into his pocket.

“Oh yeah? I bet you loved getting to see me naked.” Tooru replied with a wink, laughing as the shorter man shoved his shoulder.

“As if! I could barely see you with the lighting.” was the flustered response. “Besides, you were the one who was getting handsy.”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Chibi-chan.” Oikawa feigned offense, scoffing as he laced their fingers together and tugged him toward the elevators. “I am nothing if not a perfect gentleman.”

“Perfect gentleman, my ass.” Hinata giggled, letting the brunette drag him along. It was nice to forget about all of the things that had been stressing him out lately.

Giggling as his boyfriend whispered something stupid in his ear as they stepped out of the elevator and into the lobby, the ginger almost failed to notice a group of all too familiar people talking to one of the receptionists.

“He’s about this tall, and his hair is orange! LIke… like an orange!”

Oh no.

“I’m sure the lady knows what color an orange is, Bokuto.” Sakusa’s monotonous voice was unmistakable.

“Pardon me for being worried! Tsumu, talk some sense into him!”

“I’m sorry, sir,” the receptionist cut in, kindly smiling up at the men in front of her. “But if the person who is missing is not a child, then we will have to wait to file a report.”

If Sakusa was with them, then the team must have really been worried about him. Maybe he should have left a note…

“Do you wanna sneak back up to your hotel room?” Oikawa whispered in his ear, his breath sending a shiver down Hinata’s spine.

“You know what…” Even Kageyama and Ushijima had gotten dragged along behind Bokuto, it seemed. Now might be as good a time as any to let everyone in on the secret. “Maybe we could just… return the keys?”

“And push our way past them?” the brunette asked incredulously, and Shoyo could practically see the gears turning in his boyfriend’s head. ( And it was pretty obvious when the lightbulb clicked on and everything fell into place. God, he was so in love with this man. )

Tooru’s eyebrows furrowed as he looked down at the younger man, as if to silently ask if he was sure. Shoyo leaned up to kiss him.

“I’m positive.”

To really solidify that he was doing this, the ginger grabbed the setter’s hand and pulled him along for the first time tonight, relishing in how perfectly their hands fit together. There was no one else on this earth whose hands fit as well as theirs, he was sure of it.

Swirling the keys around his fingers yet again, Oikawa’s longer strides had him stepping ahead of Hinata. He shot a dazzling smile at the receptionist, no doubt the same one who had slipped him the keys, based on her reaction to his charm.

“Excuse us, boys.” he said, donning the Japan national team jersey that Hinata had been wearing before they went on their late night rendezvous. “Thank you for pulling these strings for us, Kobayashi-sama.”

“Anything for a gold medalist, Oikawa-sama!” she beamed, ignoring Bokuto’s and Atsumu’s squawks of protests. “Enjoy your night.”

“Likewise.” he replied with a grin, and Hinata couldn’t help but to beam at the woman before she finally refocused her attention to his teammates.

“Now, as I was saying—”

“SHOYO?!” Bokuto cut her off with a shriek, surging forward to pull him into a sort of chokehold-esque hug. It wasn’t the most uncomfortable hug he’d ever gotten but Bokuto… but it was definitely up there. “Where were you? We were worried sick!”

“I wasn’t.” Kageyama quipped, eyes taking in the scene in front of him. “Why’s Oikawa-san in your shirt?”

“He is?” Atsumu asked, pushing his way past Yaku and Ushiwaka to inspect the brunette’s appearance.

“Jeez, did the whole team show up?” Shoyo muttered, grip tightening on his boyfriend’s hand. “Aren’t I allowed to catch up with Toto?”

“Toto?” Tobio questioned, his face scrunching up in a way that high school Hinata would have mocked him for.

“That’s Oikawa-san to you, Tobio-chan.” Tooru snipped, wincing when Shoyo jabbed his ribs with his finger.

“Be nice.”

“Well you’re the one who wanted to tell them, Sho!”

“Tell us what?” Hoshiumi cut in, making his presence known.

“Am I not allowed to spend time with my boyfriend without Bokuto rallying the troops?”

“Why do you assume it was me?” Bokuto complained, finally letting go of Hinata as the rest of the team shouted various things along the lines of: “Boyfriend?”, and “Since when?”, “That explains the hug before the match, then.”, and his personal favorite, “ Oikawa , of all people?”

“When did this happen?” Kageyama asked, that stupid vein in his head popping out as he no doubt struggled to accept the fact that his best friend was dating his greatest rival.

“Um…” Shoyo looked to Tooru for an answer, whining when he only got a shrug in response. “Help me out here, Grand King!”

“Ugh. Come on, Sho. That’s not fair.” Oikawa grumbled, his bottom lip jutting out in a pout. “You know what it does to me when you call me that.”

“Gross.” Atsumu commented, making a face. “We didn’t need to know that.”

“But we did need to know where you are!” Bokuto cried, hair drooping as he sulked at the ginger. “I was worried.”

“I’m sorry, Bo.” Shoyo said with a soft sigh, thinking for a moment as he chose his words carefully. “I didn’t know how to tell you guys because, well. Tooru and I unofficially started dating whenever he ran into me in Brazil.”

“Aww.” Yaku commented, elbowing Atsumu when he fake gagged in the background.

“What do you mean?” Ushijima inquired, his gruff voice startling Hinata.

“Don’t start, Ushiwaka.” Oikawa warned, earning another jab from his boyfriend. “Ouch! Sorry…”

“I mean that we never made things official, if that makes sense?” he let out a long sigh. “Look, long story short: Tooru and I talked pretty much every day following that fateful encounter. We planned trips, met up constantly, that kind of thing. I can’t tell you when we got together because I don’t really know.”

“But when did the kissing start?” Bokuto asked, securing another disgusted sound, this one from Kageyama.

“Do I really have to listen to this?”

“No.” Sakusa replied, already turning to walk away while Bokuto insisted that, yes, this was necessary.

“Trust me, we’ve done a lot more than kissing, Bokuto-san!”

“Tooru!” Shoyo whined with an exasperated sigh, as his teammates collectively groaned and started to disperse.

“Gross, Oikawa-san.” Atsumu said, scrunching his nose.

“What, Bokuto-san asked!”

“And I want to know everything!”
