Chapter Text

1.

Growing up, Peter had been very sick. It was something that he, luckily, grew out of for the most part as he got older. Sure, he still needed contacts to be able to see, but gone was his asthma and many of his allergies. 

It was this sickness that prevented Peter from being able to participate in sports events like all the kids his age. Instead, he and his Uncle Ben became the greatest Overwatch duo in the history of gaming. 

Okay, maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration, but to Peter it certainly felt that way. The two of them would play for hours, coming up with different strategies to take down the other team, each one more creative than the last. 

When Peter turned 11, Ben had signed the two of them up for a class on computer construction. The trip was only meant to be a nice way for the boys to save money if the run-down laptop they were using finally broke down, but Peter instantly fell in love, and one class turned to eight, and eight classes turned into coding classes as well.

Peter was 14 when his Uncle Ben, his father figure, had been shot and killed in front of him. There was nothing that Peter could have done to stop it and yet he still felt guilty for it every day. He wished that there was some kind of way for him to keep his Uncle's memory alive. 

A few weeks later Ned had brought up the idea as the two of them were attempting to write their essays for English. 

“It's super cool dude! Imagine posting a youtube video, but it’s happening as you record and you can respond to people in live time!,” Ned explained, ecstatic. 

Peter glanced briefly up at his friend. “Ned, you know I love you man, but the people want to watch celebrities, like Tony Stark. They aren’t going to want to watch some kid from Queens goof off.”

“Then don’t tell them you are a kid from Queens,” Ned reasoned, “wear a mask or just don’t show your face.”

Peter turned to fully look at Ned, unimpressed. 

“Peter please, you are the best Overwatch player, like ever, and the world needs to see that! Plus, you have the perfect streamer energy and when you blow up you could meet Tony Stark and the Avengers and then you could join them..”

“Ned.”

“..and then my best friend would be famous and then I would be like ‘I know that guy!’ and oh my god I could mod for you and kick bullies out of your chat and be like ‘BEGONE BULLY’ and you could get so much money from donations…”

“Ned!”

“...like have you seen Tony Stark and the way his pc company blew up once he started making the super environmentally friendly stuff and have you SEEN his setup? It’s actually incredible, he has like seven monitors and he plays like every game ever and if you made a game he might play it...”

“NED!”

“Sorry,” Ned finally looked back to where Peter was standing, cutting off his rambling. “What’s up?”

Peter shook his head fondly, before giving a small smile to his best friend. 

“I’ll give it a try. Just something small though, like Overwatch in a solo queue.” Peter paused, thinking. “And I’m building my own pc. I’m not spending all that money on something that crappy”

Two months later found the two boys dumpster diving for parts behind a Best Buy. Why were they doing this, you may ask? Great question, because Ned is wondering the same thing right about now.

Turns out when Peter said he was building his own pc, he did not mean that he wanted to order all the parts off of Amazon or the Stark Industries PC Parts website, but rather that he wanted to Frankenstein it from parts thrown away by big companies. 

Pulling out a battered memory card box from behind a pile of discarded games, Peter grinned.

“Bingo! Behold, a SI grade memory card, but for way less money, and way less shipping time. And,” Peter continued, his grin growing by the second, “It’s the final piece I need to finish ‘Peter’s Epic Computer 2.0’... name still pending.”

“2.0 because you forgot fans in the first version and it set on fire?” Ned inquired, sounding innocent but with a smile that made Peter know he was being taunted. 

“We aren’t talking about ‘Peter’s Epic Computer Version One’ right now Ned, may that beautiful beast rest in peace.” 

Ned gave Peter a disgusted look. “If you ever call your computer a ‘beautiful beast’ again I might have to unfriend you irl.”

That night Ned got a dm from a very excited Peter, containing a very shaky video of a truly beautiful, but very scuffed looking handcrafted laptop.

2.

It’s not exactly a secret that Peter Parker is on the poorer side of kids who go to midtown. I mean, he's a scholarship student in a class full of people whose parents paid thousands of dollars to send their kids to Midtown.

Despite this lack of money, Peter had never set up any kind of donation link or subscription setup for his streams. He had started streaming to feel closer to Uncle Ben, and because Ned had told him to, and he trusted Ned’s ideas. Plus, wouldn’t streaming lose its fun if it became something he only did for money? 

Even if he did get endorsed to have subs, and even if he did set up a donation page, who of his almost 800 followers was going to pay to watch him play a lot of Kiriko games or watch him silently type out code? Wow, he really needed to work on that self confidence.

Alas, after weeks of pestering from Ned, as well as a few persistent viewers, Peter had a donation box posted to his Twitch page and a few very happy customers. All that was left to do was to let people know.

Michelle Jones was… an enigma to Peter. On one hand, she sat at lunch with him and Ned, gave input on some of their conversations, and even laughed at one of Peter’s jokes! On the other hand, she calls him and Ned losers regularly and they’ve never really established if they are actually friends. Oh, and she might be the random number that just texted Peter at four in the morning on a random Thursday.

True to her word, it is about an hour later when Ned and Mj get to the Parker’s apartment, Mj holding a large thermos filled with the sugary monstrosity that Peter insists is the best tea in New York. May lets them into the apartment in a flurry of movement, clearly rushing to get ready for work, before calling a quick goodbye and exiting the apartment.

Moving to Peter’s bedroom, Ned cracks the door open slowly. Peter is out cold, hanging halfway off of his bed, laptop discarded to the side with a notification from Netflix asking if he is still watching. The whole scene would be kind of amusing if it wasn’t for the way Peter had clearly sweat through his sheets several times already that day before the two arrived. 

The two make quick eye contact before silently coming to an agreement. Ned swiftly crossed the room and shook awake a sleepy Peter, leading him up and out of bed and to the couch in the center of the apartment.

Mj took this opportunity to shake Peter’s mess of tissues onto the floor and strip his bed. Heading down the hall to what she hoped would be a bathroom with a washer of some kind where she could start a load of Peter’s sheets, before returning to the couch to make Ned take care of the dirty tissues now on the floor.

After they had sufficiently cleaned up Peter’s room, and a set of spare sheets had been put on the bed, Ned shook his best friend back awake and helped him back to his room. Now much more awake than last time, Peter quickly grabbed his phone and opened their group chat.

Peter nods quickly, before gesturing to his desk chair and the end of the bed in the best “sit down, make yourself at home” gesture one can make while sick and not actually saying any words. 

Mj plops down in the desk chair and hands the thermos over to Peter with a stern look that makes Peter immediately start taking small sips. Ned crosses the room and grabs a pair of headphones from seemingly nowhere before handing them over to peter and sitting at the end of the bed.

MJ | @michelle_jones : You pulled those out of nowhere??

That night, the stream goes until almost midnight before Peter’s mods regretfully say goodbye. Peter gains no less than 53 new followers, many interested in seeing the artwork of the person who made all of Spider-Man’s new branding.

Peter also receives several donations from user @flashthompson, who asked several times for art of him with spiderman, donating a generous sum every time. Weird. 

There are even more donations from user @youknowwhoiam, who seems to have decided that donating $50 every time he wants to speak is better than just using the chat like everyone else.

Several Spider-Man fans now use a new pfp, courtesy of mj, who is very proud of her work, and even more proud she made her friend happy. 

Ned and MJ do get sick in the end, but it was totally worth it.

Great question - Ned is really good with coding, so he did a lot of the framework for the game itself, with Spidey’s help. They had the idea for the concept of the game a few years ago, just no plot or characters yet, so they’ve had a lot of time to work on it.

Spidey and I worked out the main storyline of the game and came up with all of the characters. I, with lots of input from Spidey, designed all of the characters and created the renders for their models in-game. Spidey gave me a general idea of how he wanted backgrounds to look, but I mostly got to come up with that part on my own :)

All of the main characters are voiced by Spider-Man, Ned, or I as well as several of our personal friends who agreed to be various characters. 90% of the Npcs are Ned with different voice filters on.
