Ironstrange prompt - "I'm not letting you slip through my fingers." - mystical-magician

Work Text:

Tony has just poured himself a drink to commemorate (or maybe mourn) the end of his marriage when FRIDAY says, “Boss, Doctor Strange is requesting penthouse access.”

God, he hopes there isn’t a crisis. Strange would have come by portal for that, though, right? “Sure, send him up.”

When he arrives, Strange is in street clothes, which argues in favor of this being an unofficial visit, at least. “Strange,” Tony greets him. “What can I do for you?” He takes a swig from his drink.

Strange takes a deep breath. “I’d like to take you on a date.”

Tony chokes on the drink. He sets the glass down blindly, coughs his windpipe clear, and regards Strange with watering eyes. “You what?”

“I’d like to take you on a date,” Strange repeats.

Tony stares. “My divorce was finalized three hours ago.

Strange shifts slightly. “I’m aware that it’s inappropriate to ask this soon,” he says. “But by some miracle you are single right now, and I’m not letting you slip through my fingers. If you’re not ready, then I will wait, but please… Remember me when you are ready.”

Strange actually seems to be serious. No one wants to date Tony this badly. “I’m really not that much of a catch,” Tony says, still bewildered. Okay, he knows he ticks a lot of the classic boxes, but between his history, his personality, his injuries post-Thanos, and his continued operations as Iron Man (which paint a huge target on his partner’s back), he’s not topping any most eligible bachelor lists anymore.

“I know you believe that.” Strange smiles, a little sadly. “But I would very much like to prove you wrong.”

Tony stares at him a while longer. Strange waits.

“What the hell,” Tony says eventually. “Sure. Take me on a date.”
